He didn't need to and by doing so left Pukki in loads of space that he should have been occupying. He is too easy to pull out of position and I am pretty sure most teams know it at this point.

Sometimes when defending you don't have a perfect choice so you make the better one, passing on the player who is running away from goal towards the touchline is the better decision than leaving a gaping hole for the player running through the middle. It is a really basic choice for most defenders.
