Comical defending for their goal, just all over the place at the back and runs not being picked up.

Was like a training drill where the defence is only allowed to apply light pressure and never touch the ball. Stemming from a pointless giveaway

It was overall shit defending, like almost every goal we concede. Trying to blame goals on an individual is pointless with this group of players.

Fair enough, but a fullback allowing himself to be nutmegged is quite bad. If he's side-on, showing him down the line like a competent fullback would do, that goal doesn't happen.

I don't like singling out players, but sometimes it's necessary. I don't rate Dalot to be fair :p

Dalot getting beaten is far less shocking than the space that existed between Maguire, Lindelof and Pogba.

Maguire charging off and leaving an acre of space like a moron as usual. And as usual Pogba waddling around ball watching when not in possession.

you just have to watch that goal and see people put majority of the blame on Maguire to see how much of objectivity is lacking when looking at Maguire this season. He's literally doing his job covering the player running behind the full back on his side.

Maguire absent (shocker) and covering not even on Pogba's radar. The pair of them are utterly shite defensively.

It's on Dalot for not knowing to stand side-on when defending against an oppostion winger, then Telles for being laughably out of positon, leaving the score competely unmarked.
Watch Maguire on the replay, he's out of his mind doing what he did.

Without the two goals to enjoy today, that defending for their goal would be as grim as anything we’ve seen this season. Just when you start to think we might be prepared to put the effort in for a top four challenge, the rest of the team is reminded it has that to contend with.

Gotta agree, maguire gave the ball away by booting it to nowhere and then gives acres of space for the goal. He's a clown that cost 80 million.

Dalot isn't great, but at least you can say he's still young rash, what the feck can you say about Maguire?

Top 4 is still to play for; I don't think it's a laughing matter how appalling our defending is. In fact, it's rage-inducing.

All our issues, including defence, stem from a poor midfield.

They leave gaps to the forwards, and don't shield the backline, leaving both exposed.

We need to get rice. I think with rice taking focusing on defensive duties, Fred could be a decent workhorse in the team.

    Half-time ratings from The Athletic:

De Gea 7 - Noticably more proactive. Vital 1v1 save at 0-0. Could do nothing for the Norwich goal
Dalot 5 - Beaten too easily for Norwich's goal
    Maguire 4 - Shaky throughout
Lindelof 8 - Quick, proactive passing along with some vital defensive contributions.
    Telles 6 - Solid
Pogba 6 - Some sublime footwork, some slack defending
Fernandes 6 - Worked hard as usual, passing still hit and miss
    Lingard 7 - Energetic
Elanga 7 - Created the opener due to his determination. Tidy
Sancho 6 - Inconsistent passing but more involved
Ronaldo 8 - Clinical. Spent the half trying to encourage his teammates, particularly the younger players like Elanga and Sancho

Watch Maguire on the replay, he's out of his mind doing what he did.
true. he seems to forget defending the goal is the most important aspect sometimes. he’s over covering and leaving a giant gap between him and lindelof. not every ball has to be won the first time.

I'd love to point my finger at him but you'd have to find him first, considering you can never tell where the feck he is going to decide to run it'll be a challenge.

Must've thought it was half time and went for a jog down the tunnel, only excuse I can think of for that

We'd be idiotic not to. Unless beating Norwich at home is your ambition.
I feel like this is exactly how our players feel...that they're just too too special to worry about beating Norwich at home.

The fact Norwich were so high up the pitch with their CB's is a bigger issue for the goal.
Zero pressing as a collective from the front yet again from United.

That was exactly what he needed to do as he was tracking a run. The big mistake is Pogba not dropping down to cover the space in the middle.

You can even see Lindelof telling him he should’ve stepped up instead of being dragged out there. Leaving the centre open for that kind of run is just silly

So you'd have Maguire ignore the runner and leave him in acres of space to receive the pass?

he standing in the middle of no man's land

So you'd have Maguire ignore the runner and leave him in acres of space to receive the pass?

Maguire isn't fast enough to cover those runs and at the end of the day didn't stop the threat either way. So even if he was 'doing his job' he's inept enough to fail regardless.

So you'd have Maguire ignore the runner and leave him in acres of space to receive the pass?

Yes, obviously. Rather than leave acres of space in front of the goal. Just because someone is making a run doesn't mean the centreback is the one who's supposed to charging off after him. It's so brainless being dragged 30 yards away from the action for literally no reason.

He knows Pogba is supposed to be our deepest lying midfielder so he surely knows when he vacates the middle of the defence nobody is going to fill in for him.

He and Pogba are equal parts to blame.

Maguire has been fine in the first half. People trying to blame him for their goal, but that is just ridiculous. He marks an opponent. Dalot lets himself be overplayed, while Pogba lets Pukki stand. On the back post, no one is covering up - but it's probably also Maguire's fault.
