Manchester United vs Liverpool (Sun 4th August, 00:30 UK time)

I for one welcome under-performing during preseason for a change. The commentator on my stream is Egyptian and has mentioned Salah nearly 500 times already.

He was solely responsible for their second goal what are you on about
He was not SOLELY responsible for it, but he didn't do well against Mo Salah - yes. Not to mention that he is a youth player and even senior players make a mistake sometimes. Collyer has been very impressive most of the first half

Give it a fecking rest will ya.

Nope I will not. Disgrace how people defend mediocre players time and time again with the same bullshit arguments.

"He's a good servant"
"He's a United fan"
"He gives his all"
"Hes shown great commitment"
"He was brilliant in those 5 games last season"

Feck off. If you're shit then you're shit and you should be nowhere near this club, it's this thinking and players that fall into this category that made us shit in the first place.

Cant believe we still have people not wanting Ugarte and De ligt while watching this
Absolutely Casemiro will become an even bigger liability this season we need to force him out he can’t start any PL game. ETH pre season is worse than last season. His loss rate gone from 42% do 60%.

He really is deluded if he thinks he’s going to get away with 8 or 9 defeats by Xmas in the PL.

We still get cut through the middle so easily, midfield needs better improvement than the defence.

I don't disagree that midfield needs improvement, that much is obvious. But we're watching an XI that is almost a X, with an invisible Sancho doing f all, and our back four is nowhere near any decent side. Amass is obviously work in progress, a kid, who has great promise, but this has been a bit of a sloppy performance. Lindelof and Evans as a partnership leaves so so much to be desired and AWB is super sloppy. I think this midfield selection would look pretty decent with a competent backline and a focal point upfront, like it actually did earlier in pre-season.

Played quite well I thought. The press is effective, and we're creating plenty. Their keeper is MOTM so far.

Obviously not taking the chances we're making, but the general play isn't bad at all considering Liverpool probably have more of their actual first team out there, and our entire defence is either getting sold or is third choice for their position.

Wat hing Casemiro hurts my eyes now. I'd feel bad for him if I didn't get the sense that he knows he is past it and is just milking him contract.

Can't believe you think 'people' have doubts about Ugaete & de Ligt because they think the current personnel are good enough.

Can Ten Hag have us playing without a huge gap between in the middle just for once.

Going to be another long season with Casemiro playing a big part. No surprise no one is bidding for him.

Same old loopy match thread....

Anyway, we look decent at times, better than Vs arsenal.... but feck me have we lost that defensive stability from season 1. Hopefully when we sort out the defence it clicks.....
Yep definitely loopy, one particular poster thinking we should shut up shop in case we get embarrassed.....in a pre season game ffs

His best game yet yes, but not the standout player. Rashford and Amass have been better.
One* of the standout ones. Yes, Rashy and Amass have been great, no argument there

I know, right.

We've looked good with the ball in this match, and we're doing okay pressing and winning the ball at the top of the pitch (even with Sancho who has been invisible). But once it goes past that initial press we're setting the same things as last season. One pass bypassing our entire midfield and leaving us exposed with just our two centre backs, and with our fullbacks and Casemiro desperately trying to get back into position.

Ugarte won't solve all our problems, because I think the main problem is tactical, but at least having a player with mobility gives us half a chance of making Ten Hag's Hari Kari-ball work.

Pretty good performance despite the result, we've been the better team and created our fair share of chances and the pressing has looked much better. Mount, Rashford and Collyer have been our best players. Defense has looked shakey but that was to be expected considering we are lacking all our starting defenders.

Casemiro surprisingly has been showing some good passing this pre-season but he was done like an amateur for the first goal and was very casual in getting back on multiple occasions. We really need another midfielder as we can't go into another season with him as a starter.

Rashford always slows down the play and never looks to get the fullback involved. Disappointing stuff.

He's pissing you off so much your speaking another language...

He is a youth player and even senior players make a horrible mistake sometimes. Collyer has been very impressive most of the first half

He's been 'impressive' because he's been willing to run, willing to receive in tight situations, willing to pass and willing to cover etc. However, that doesn't cover up his lack of that final bit of quality on the ball and that mistake.

For a youth player, I like him but it's a fairly low bar.

Giving Sancho any minutes is just keeping him fit for the inevitable Dortmund loan in January. Cas can’t be the DM anymore, I think he still offers something going forward but there isn’t really a spot if you are going to play a DM next to Mainoo and Fernandes as a 10 other than as a sub.

I don't disagree with you about his quality funnily enough, it's your ridiculous vitriol towards him that I have the problem with. Knock it off, there's no need for it.

Poor first half from us, only 2 real chances created and some woeful passing in the final 3rd has been costly.

What is the point in having Lindelof on the pitch? He looks like he is scared of the ball.
No. Go back and watch it again.

Not bothered by the result. We'll be starting the season with a different backline and better midfield.

We do need to work on having depth in some areas though. We have no backup to Cas or Hojlund. Cas is worrying me, and I don't really know if Zirkzee can replace Hojlund, but even with him, we're so short.

Next summer I hope we don't go overseasons and play rivals from PL. Stay home and play lower leagues. Pitches and rivalry is too much to get thru without injuries etc. Top4 is hard enough nevermind start off being handicapped by tours and injuries. Football decisions not money decisions.
We’re overseas to bring in new fans and to showcase our brand while prepearing for the new season against our rivals. Why would emwe stay at home and only play lower quality teams who probably would do anything to get a win against us.

Lindelof's 'defending' before Salah crossed for the second goal

Just peak non-committal, being in the vicinity of the ball but not doing anything to affect it from him.

Collyer just over committed for the goal, he made an all or nothing challenge rather than stay with Salah and prevent him getting into position to make the cross. It was naive when there was nobody covering behind him but hardly anything he should be crucified for. You could see the talent in the link up play with Amass and it is obvious they are comfortable with each other. If he stays around the squad he will build confidence and rapport with the senior players and become more bold in his play.

The press needs to be better & the defense needs to step up for that. Still an easy pathway for teams to our goal if they beat the initial press.

I see the midfield keeps getting blamed when the issue lies elsewhere.

Yes I switched on at 25th min expecting to see them struggle after reading this thread, but they were some of our most active players
 Redcafe will redcafe

How many of this team are our first choice eleven? Three, maybe four?

I agree. EtH doesnt seem to understand this - this formation is a bit suicidal and while friendlines can often make it seem like we are playing well, in a competitve game we will get destroyed.

I'm commenting in general, with last season in mind, and the lack of signings in mind.

As things stand, our defensive options on the opening game of the season will be weaker than that of last season. That is Varane is gone, and Yoro injured.

As things stand, our midfield options are even weaker than last season. With Amrabat gone (not that I'm disappointed), and brought in no one.

We still need a massive rebuild of the defence and midfield. 2 midfielders should have been the minimum coming into the summer. There is still time, but the season is 12 days away and we've got the same team that finished 8th last season + Zirkzee.

It requires a proactive back line to close the gap. Probably why we are shopping for defenders

Casemiro has seen it all in high level football, that error for the first goal was criminal

He's been diving in all pre season, we keep bad players too long at this club

Absolutely. :+1:

We had a fully fit Lizu and Varane playing together almost every week in season 1, now we have the useless Lindelof and the 38 year old Jonny Evans playing instead.

A back line of Evans and Lindelof is really going to hurt in that regard as we are seeing tonight.

Casemiro not defending well and giving the ball away cheaply has been a theme going back to last season. Definitely need Ugarte.

Its both the tactics and the personnel.

As match day threads go I've gotta say, this one is equally bemusing, uplifting and depressing.... Redcafe.
