Manchester United vs Lens (Sat 5th August, 12:45 UK time)

This team will click at some point and when it does, it's gonna be beautiful.

Everyone except Bruno and Garnacho is concerning (including Onana, Martinez, Varane, Casemiro, Rashford, Shaw)

The people that think adding Højlund to this team will all of a sudden make our attack tick are in dreamland.

The personnel there just isn't good enough for starting quality and I include Rashford the striker in this. Obviously the LW version is good enough.

How have we been? Any stand outs, positive or negative?

I’ve got no issue with forwards having speculative efforts from the half way line. The more the merrier. What I do have a problem with is unforced errors by the back line that catch everyone out of position.
Again, if Onana was just inside his box which is probably where he should have been the first time shot doesn't even happen.

The first time shot happened because the striker knew Onana was too high.

Shouldn’t go overboard with pre-season but I was hoping things would come together a little bit. Judging this performance, we don’t look ready individually or tactically. Our passing needs to be crisper and we just need to start playing like a team. On a brighter note, I think Garnacho has earned his place next Monday night.

You’d hope so since they havent even played a game together yet.
Everybody here is mental. Getting their match day doom and glooms match fit for the new season.

First time I’ve seen us properly play the first xi all preseason. Happy to let them play their way into form here. Lots of positives. People reading too much into it as usual. Almost a good thing to have to come from a goal down, creates a sense of tension there might not otherwise be. Good prep for the season.

If the idea is for Mount to win the second ball I don't understand why didn't we do more crosses to their defenders, then it'll be 1v1 situation between their midfield vs Mount... better than just passing it sideways at the back.

I thought we would translation into a possession-based team but the players are out there freestyle. I still don't see the patterns of play or what ETH has planned.

Mount leaves Cas too exposed in midfield. He's going to have cover so much by himself.

Brightside is that we have a week to sort it out.

I'm already worried about Cas being burned out by October/November time. He can't do this on his own.

It's getting a bit concerning now. Can't hide behind the it's only pre-season excuse when the season's so close and the full first xi is playing.

The 4 guys upfront are becoming a problem - they simply aren't good enough in front of goal. Garnacho by far the best of them - but even he fails too often to test the goalkeeper in good positions
Our attack is the weakest area of the team by a mile. There's zero chemistry and a severe lacks of intelligence.

A bit grim, but it’s only a pre-season match.

Someone needs to have a word with Onana about playing insanely high high up the pitch.

One thing never changes here during match day - the moaning !!

Season hasn't even started and I'm sick of this place. Would be nice to have a modicum of optimism.

Even if the season did turn to shit, I'd prefer a bit of gallows humour to just hammering negativity.

We were winning it all in that decade, just in case you're not even aware. It was also the best decade overall for football.

Such a stupid thing to say.

Yeah because football hasn't changed since then.

Your post tells me your critical thinking isn't a strong point so why bother arguing with you further

Dissapointibg considering we are one week from the start of the season. Bruno and garnacho look great, else everyone looks like they are still on vacation

We look like how we were when Eriksen got injured last season. Unless we get Bruno to sit deep like we did on occasion last season, we have no one who can properly control a game and pass the ball around in midfield. I can't see this system working without someone like that alongside Casemiro.

There's some good in there, but really don't think this balance works in the midfield. We're not progressing the ball at all, just looking for first time over the top balls which so rarely come off.

That goal is a combination of things, but really don't believe it's on Onana. Sucks because of the narrative and it'll 100% be picked up by the media, but the combination of Dalot/Varane f*ck up and then an absolute wonder strike of a first time shot - can't see that happening all that often. Much happier with a sweeper keeper and having that risk tbh.

Up front we've been really poor though. Rashford just isn't a centre forward, Antony is Antony and I'm shocked by both the Mount miss and how little he's been involved, expect vastly more from him. Garnacho has been fine.

Big second half in a sense. Expect same XI out there .

We’re already in full meltdown and the season hasn’t even started. Gotta love the caf

This is the matchday thread in full swing --- up to speed already. No need for too many pre-season matches to get up & running.

World's largest congregation of bed-wetters.

Had Mount scored you and many others here would be saying different things not moaning.

I am one of the more positive people on here but yes I’d probably be moaning less. Garnacho has also been decent but it was those two only that made that move happen really. Onana not at fault for the goal.

We haven't really learned anything we didn't know about this squad from that half. Bruno makes lots of chances, those chances tend to get wasted. We're vulnerable to being sucker punched when we don't take advantage of early pressure. Anthony can't dribble a full back to save his life. Dalot is too casual in possession and two one note in the final third. I still don't really get the question that Mount is the answer to. Pretty nothing performance all around.

Eth needs to show his worth, another attempt at implementing his style of play is failing.

Anthony is a complete waste of money, Casemiro and half the defence are struggling with the game, and we cannot score to save a life.

I have seen nothing positive this preseason.

Again, if Onana was just inside his box which is probably where he should have been the first time shot doesn't even happen.

The first time shot happened because the striker knew Onana was too high.
You don’t know he would have saved it so this discussion is based on what you think might have happened if he was stood somewhere else. I’m saying it doesn’t happen if the defender doesn’t play a shit pass. He had multiple passing options on, he could have played it back to Onana which was probably the right pass ironically.

Antony is just not rated in my eyes. I think he will be consider an expensive flop, will probably be shipped out in another 1-2 seasons. Garnacho on the other hand is exciting, what an outlet with a few greats moves.

We still just look like a counter attacking team. We look clueless when we're trying to create chances any other way.

I don't expect it to change over a few games...but the only type of goal United can score is the 'Bruno setting up a counter attack' goal.

Rashford in the first half was making plenty of runs, but his teammate created zero chances for him.

We look nowhere ready for the new season - and it starts just under a week now. Attack's a bit disjointed but my god, we look so porous in midfield.
