Manchester United Vs Charlton Official Match thread

RUDDY

Paul Scholes will make his return to first team action for United's Premiership match away to Charlton - but Mikael Silvestre and Seba Veron will miss the trip to London, according to Carlos Queiroz.

Paul Scholes has made a remarkable recovery after having surgery on his troublesome knee injury just three weeks ago.

United boss Ferguson had claimed that Scholes could be out for as long as six weeks.

However, the news comes as a welcome surprise as United's midfield had looked light until the return of Nicky Butt.

Paul Scholes is certain to partner Butt in the centre of United's midfield with Beckham and Giggs patrolling the flanks.

whos going to start at left back?

Left back? If Silvestre's not fit it'll likely be Phil Neville with Gary Neville coming in at right back.
I'd be more concerned about Ruud van Nistelrooy's fitness.
It's about time United started to assert their authority. Arsenal need to be given something to think about. A win, and a good one, is required. It would be a boost going into the match if Leeds can get something from their match against Arsenal lunchtime on Saturday.

i havent seen anything about Ruud

must say its great to have scholes back

just when are we gonna field a full strength team

we seem to get one back and lose 2

Ruud seems to have travelled with the team.
But whetere we risk him or not with Olympiakos to play on Tusday is another thing.
Hope he's on the bench at least - but I'd love to see Ruud teamed up with Forlan.
Some of Forlan's movement off the ball is excellent and he could create plenty of space up front for Ruud or midfield runners.
It's usually a pretty open game against Charlton but we need to start taking a decent percentage of our chances. We should get plenty of scoring opportunities on Saturday and it would be great to see Ruud there to take them. On the other hand it might give Forlan a chance to get on the scoresheet. He really needs to start a game soon and get a decent run in the side to see if he really can cut it in the league. He needs to be given the chance now.
If Ruud is fit I'd play him alongside Forlan. Wouldn't risk Scholes yet. last thing we need os for him to break down again. Give him another week.
Veron should get a bit of space to play the ball around if he's fit to play. My team: Barthez, G Neville , Silvestre (or P Neville), Ferdinand, Blanc, Beckham, Veron (if fit), Butt, Giggs, Van Nistelrooy, Forlan.
Subs to include Solskjaer, O'Shea and Scholes.

But it was not all good news, as Fergie revealed: “Rio Ferdinand has a knee knock and is very doubtful and Mikael Silvestre also suffered a knock on the knee and he too is doubtful.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s hamstring injury, which forced him off at half time in Leverkusen on Tuesday night, is not serious, and John O’Shea is over the concussion which forced his substitution.

The Reds’ two-goal hero against Bayer Leverkusen had to retire at half time in Germany amid fears that he was set for a prolonged absence.

“Ruud’s hamstring tightened on Tuesday night and we did the right thing taking him off when we did at half time,” says Fergie.

“He’s going to Charlton but whether or not I play him is another matter. We’ll see how it goes.”

John O’Shea has recovered from double vision sustained in the Champions League match in Leverkusen, the Euro victory plunged United into more potential defensive problems.

rio might be out aswell

not looking good

I've never gone by what Sir Fergie says on injuries. How many times has he said a player is very doubtful the next thing he's out there on the pitch?
As ever, we'll have to wait 'til the line-up is announced before we know anything. I'm going for lunch...

<a href="http://www.redcafe.info/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=008758" target="_blank">I said so...</a> bon appetit! ;)

Where's the lineup predictions thread? Or shall we do it here?

It sounds like Rio is injured in which case it might be O'Shea (according to some sources he's ok to play now) and Blanc at the back. Otherwise, I think your lineup might be right.

Everyone's saying different things! Guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Agreed, it's great that the Ginger Ninja is back!!

Killing might be a little excessive though. A sound thrashing will suffice!

Scholes, Solskjaer, Forlan start.

Ruud on bench.

Best midfield imo and Forlan gets a start, really really hope he gets his first goal from open play today.

It's at the official site, at least it was the last 600 times I checked.

Midfield is Forlan - Becks - Butt - Giggs, with Scholes and Ole up front.

Makes no sense to me, I hope they switch around. Forlan got his first booking? For dissent.

I think Forlan could be a great winger but Scholes is no forward.

Seems weird to play two players out of position deliberately, unfair on both of them. Beckham in the middle too? He's getting his way on this more and more. Good or bad?

I think its great alex is willing to try the unknown...makes me less nervous about him

I don't think it's that bad an idea. Forlan is good on the wing, and Scholes can play up front.

But whatever, it isn't the first time we've use players out of position. I think this is where Fergie's reputation for being a poor tactician comes from.
