Manchester United vs. Athletic Bilbao

Good that Rio and Carrick are rested, though I'm surprised Fabio isn't getting this game over Evra. I'd prefer Giggs and Rooney not be involved though.

Why the feck do we play Rooney in this nothing League.. Evra also should be resting.

Winning is a habit, scoring goals is a habit. If a striker scores a goal he doesn't wanna be dropped for the next game. Scoring goals builds confidence. There is zero reason to drop Wazza after he's only just come back into the side and lets not forget Bilbao are a top team. It may be the Europa league but I'd rather not be embarrassed on our own turf...

...again.

As long as Park isn't anywhere near the middle of the park, that's an alright team.

Think Bilbao will end up the happier with the result though...unless they're worse than I think they are.

We've started with Giggs and Jones in central midfield only once. We lost to Basel 1-2.

Park - Young - Nani, and Rooney up front.

Fergie talked about the defence against Ajax being very young which he said was a mistake from him which could have seen us knocked out. The average age of the defence tonight isn't be much better but if Evra wasn't playing then it would have been Rio.

not gonna blame our central midfield for that loss - the entire team was flat from the start

Interesting line up, keeping possession is going to be difficult with that midfield. Hopefully Anderson will get some minutes.

Rooney going back to wide support player? If not that means Park either in the middle (big gulp) or on the wing (medium gulp).

I just thought Giggs and Jones had never started together in central midfield, that was the answer to my previous post.

But an interesting one.

Anderson!

You want the moves like Ando
I got the moves like Ando
I got the mooooooves like Ando

I dont like Hernandez starting in this one. I cant see Athletic pushing their team up the pitch, which means that Hernandez wont have much space to run into. Rather have Welbeck for this one. Good team anyways though, should get the job done.

Perhaps Carrick was rested with the opposition in mind. Whenever I've seen Bilbao play they really like to press high up and not allow you time on the ball, something that doesn't suit Carrick at all.

Back four against Ajax (Home): Rafael Jones Smalling Fabio
Ages: 21, 20, 22, 21
Average age: 21

Back four tonight: Rafael Smalling Evans Evra
Ages: 21, 22, 24, 30
Average age: 24.25

Yeah I understood it afterwards :)

Not happy at all with that midfield.

Young has been poor in everything but his execution, strange thing to complain about but when he's not adding anything to the build up and there is no threat on the opposite wing, he's going to spend a lot of the time with them doubling up on him.

Giggs and Jones was a dire midfield against Basel. As I said about Giggs and Anderson earlier, I just can't see how these two can compliment each other in any way. They both get out of position regularly. Both love charging forward and neither is particularly good at ball retention for different reasons.

Bilbao are very much an unknown quantity to me so I have no idea how they will perform against this team but I can't say it fills me with any sort of confidence. I'm expecting a game a bit like the Spurs one to be honest. Lots of scrappy passing from us, not enough possession for a home match but hopefully a couple of moments of quality from our players to put the tie out of Bilbao's reach.

Can't see it being a classic by any means...

Yes!! Thursday nights on channel 5, get in!!!

Yes, in high-pressurised close quarters I'd much rather have the tight control of Jones and Park. :D

Glad to see Rafael starting.

Fergie did say we changed too much in previous European games and this time he seems to have minimized it, which is good. Some players do need games but, doing it wholesale has always resulted in mediocre performances.

Come on United - lets do this.

Bloody hell Channel 5s coverage is rubbish. I'm so annoyed I had so much work to do today else I'd have gone to the game. Jim Rosenthal I remember you from the good old days of the late 90s on Channel 3. What went wrong...?

I'd say that is exactly the reason Hernandez is signing, to make sure they don't play too high a line against us and smother our midfield.

People bemoaning the Europa league piss me off. Who the feck? It would be great to add it to our honours and we do not through games.

Sorry Rant over....

Bilbao are quality. Their front 3 are frightening. They press the ball constantly and they attack at pace. Watch out for Susaeta.

Breaking news on channel 5!!

According to stan Wayne Rooney will be wearing the number 10 tonight, stay tuned for more cutting edge coverage

Well that and Welbeck's had a tiring week, 90 minutes with England and over the weekend.

Yes! An ad break on channel 5 after 6 minutes, get in there!!

Shame about Berba again, although I hope he's not injured I hope theres a good reason why he's not playing. Otherwise I really feel that he's getting done over. Good team though, shame about Fabio not playing though.

If they press the ball constantly we're in for a fun night with our midfield, none of them are exactly known for their pass and move work in tight spaces.

I want Carrick, Scholes or Cleverley :(

You mean a central midfielder playing in central midfielder?

You crazy.
