Manchester United vs Arsenal 24/10/04

Isn't this the first time Arsenal have played one of last season's top 5?

Blackburn, Fulham, Norwich, Man City...not exactly hard fixtures.

Yet, you guys can't beat the likes of Blackburn, Everton, Boro and Birmingham. ;)

I think it'll be a draw. 2-2.

We don't define our greatness having only played bottom-half fodder.
By far the best team you have played is Bolton at Highbury.

we just have to win, a performance like against pool would be great, lets give them no chance, gaby should break thierry's legs, and the win is ours. i want an attacking fielded side, at the back we are strong enough, we need to score!

Everton? Boro? Bottom half fodder? Look at the league table - I think you'll find those two are ahead of a certain Man United. Unless you consider yourselves to be bottom-half fodder? ;)

Not denying that we have yet to be "seriously" challenged (I admit our fixtures have been reasonably "easy" til now) - but Man Utd haven't really been able to gain maximum points against "bottom-half fodder".

The thing is this...

By all known form, Arsenal should sweep us aside.

If we somehow manage to match them and beat them, I will be one pissed off puppy.

Why? Because that will mean we have joined the ranks of the also-rans who judge success on the basis of one "great" result over our arch rivals.

If we are capable of beating Arsenal this weekend, why weren't we capable of beating all the other opponents this season?

I hate to say it but I hope Fergie puts out his absolute best XI for this game and we get mullered 3-0.

That might prove a better kick up the backside for the rest of the season than if we somehow manage to scrape a 1-0 win.

We at least have an extra day to prepare for the game if that counts for anything.

Keane has probably played 90 minutes less football than he would normally have done as a result of this virus, Ronaldo has had a bit of a rest also and then there is Rio to come in also, he'll provide some added leadership at the back.

Fergie.....we have the tools to beat Arsenal on Sunday, they didn't beat us last season in 3 attempts but we beat them; if the Old Trafford crowd give the gooner the welcome and provide the hospitality which they deserve :D [I am sure we shall, we're not bad hosts are we..;)] and the players are up for it, we can send them back to Highbury full of doubt and what if's and defeated.

It is all about belief, the 11 players which walk out onto that pitch on Sunday afternoon must believe they can win, realise their potential. If on the other hand they go out and give them too much respect and are not ready to do battle right from the off, i can see a similar game to that of the 1st leg of the Real Madrid quarter final of a few years ago.

Fergie knows how important this game is, the players do; it is a matter of survival and pride, two of the most basis human characterisitcs, we must win this match, we have to win this match, SO WE WILL, it is as simple as that.

I'll be there on Sunday, i reckon the score will be Manchester United 3-2 Arsenal. *fingers crossed and pray*

Oh and btw, the irony of such a scoreline isn't lost on me either but you can always hope.

Nick,

I think Fergie will allow Ronaldo to concentrate on attacking and not have to track back.
It means Neville will have support-prob from O'Shea, so the midfield will prob be flooded.
Arsenal will see this ploy coming but Wenger doesnt have the tactical sense to change things around. His players play with muscle rather than brains.

Its a sad day when we find ourselves wanting to get beaten, but I felt the same way last night. Maybe getting beaten will be the kick in the teeth we need, though what the result of such a kick can be I do not know. If it forces Fergie to start playing CM's in CM, and wingers on the wing then that may be a place to start. If we keep drawing games there's always the "we've not been beaten since the first game of the season" brigade which for all intents and purposes can be made to look positive. I knew Fergie would come out with the "a draw away from home in the CL" malarky last night, and again, a 0-0 draw away in the CL might be a good result against Lyon, but not against Sparta, and not when they had the best chances by far.

I can't see it being any less than 3-0 to Arsenal on Sunday. I can't see us scoring a goal against them. Heck, I'm not sure I could see us scoring against Palace at the moment.

Like we've not had enough kicks in the teeth already.
Moron.

Sorry, Jopub.

Unlike Davo, Nate, Gillespie, GoonerGirl, Bodzilla etc, you really have nothing to offer this forum as a rival supporter :(

You're a far cry from being funny, you're definitely not intellligent, and you're certainly not witty.

Get battered much at school?

Heh heh I though it quite funny meself

.....still if you cant see that :smirk:

As only you would, anyway. . .

Discounting current league positions and form, which team would you say is most likely to have the necessary "tools" to beat you?

All bias aside for a moment.

Threat to your title, yes.

In a one off match, without any bias, I believe that your biggest threat is most definitely Manchester United.

Player for Player, our best XI is still the most superior in the league; just we're playing like shite, and individuals clearly do not make up a team.

considering last night's result and the context of the game on sunday, i now expect this line up

carroll
neville g
heinze
ferdinand
silvestre
keane
giggs
ronaldo
scholes
rooney
RVN

many might call for phil neville to play with keano, or smithy to play and add bite to our attack...but fergie will go with what he thinks is his strongest fit xi but i think if any of our players cant raise their game for this one, they dont deserve to be at our great club.

Ainian, you have totally overlooked another meaning of the word TOOLS, once you realise that, it was fairly amusing.
Muchly like another quote from SAF this week likening The Arsenal to a rolling stone gathering moss, that made me laugh too.

I never want us to go into the match thinking we are already beaten before the ball had ever been kicked, what does it do good for the morale of our players. I know our form all along this season has been appaling, but that dosen't mean we should throw in the towel. I hope our players will be fired up for this one and do all they can to win the match.

it's actually quite sad of you to gloat about your success in a United forum while putting us down. Where were you when United has its glory days? Is your life and happiness solely dependent upon United's not winning? there is a name for you, ABU!

I dont blame you though. United has been dominating the games for over a decade and people like yourself cant wait to see its decline. But sorry to disappoint, that would only happen in your dream.

You maybe unbeaten, win the league for a couple of times, it will take a very very long time and more trophies for your club to be spoken of in the same breath with United. That's a fact, not an opinion. Get it?!

Bit harsh young man, our young lady from Sydney, was only replying to a debate she was having with Mr Bungle with regard to the merits of the teams that both of our sides have played against this season. I saw no gloating, but a reasonable prediction that the match this weekend will result in a draw.

first of all, she asked us to look at the league table we are behind certain teams, yeah right, the league is decided in October! Who gives her the right to ask if we have considered we are the bottom half?!

I cant see why you can defend her. If it is not gloating, what is? Where is she when United is winning?

Sunday

Any self respecting United fan must be hoping for us to beat the gooners on Sunday. The results of this would be
1) an improvement in morale
2) closing the gap
3) causing some doubts in the gooners camp.

For this reason SAF must put out his best Xl which may or may not inlude Phil Neville.

If you don't want United to win then you are not a fan.

You conveniently ignored the rest of my posts. I did say that I think Sunday's game will be a draw. That's gloating?

A Manc pointed out our having only played "bottom-half fodder"; two of those teams are currently ahead of you in the league table. I was merely making the point that if these teams are indeed "bottom-half fodder", then why couldn't you mighty Reds beat them? Never did I mention how I thought the table will end up, nor about who'll win the trophy.

And if it wasn't clear enough in my initial post, my remark about Man Utd being "bottom-half fodder" was sarcasm. And simply a logical conclusion to come to if you go by Mr. Bungle's theory that the likes of Everton and Boro are bottom half fodder. ;)

Chill out, mate. :wenger:

He's the loser who quietly mumbles stale one-liners and chuckles to himself in the corner.

Wind up, nothing else.

That's much better, they don't understand reasoned debate, you have to batter them some times. I think that you may have been too nice as some of them on here actually like you, and we can't have that can we.;)

It wont be a draw.
If Arsenal win then I might entertain the idea of them becoming the dominant English team.
If we win it just keeps us in the title hunt. Nothing more. There is nothing to suggest they will bottle it for the rest of the season unless we royally hump them 6-2. If we win 2-1 then I think Arsenal will just carry on winning their games after Sundays encounter.
We are the ones with more to lose-forget the arseholes unbeaten record.
However there is a real chance of us rattling them at Old Trafford.
