Manchester United upgrade contact with Pep Guardiola, sources say

Manchester United still hope they can beat neighbours Manchester City to the signing of Pep Guardiola and have significantly upgraded what had previously only been back-channel contact with the Bayern Munich manager, sources have told ESPN FC -- but there is concern they might have left it too late.

Despite widespread reports last week that United were giving full backing to Louis van Gaal, sources now say that was partly because it was close to a big Champions League game against Wolfsburg.

Defeat in that match and subsequent elimination from the competition, however, has caused doubt about the Dutch coach's suitability to the job to spread among the Old Trafford hierarchy. Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth will only amp up the pressure.

There were always some who felt the club should be doing their utmost to bring in Guardiola, and that process has now been "greatly accelerated," a source said, with the prospect of the Catalan ending up at local rivals City also playing greatly on the minds of United officials.

The worry, however, is whether they are too far behind in the pursuit.

The friendship between Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson could sway the Bayern boss to join Man United, sources say.

Although Guardiola has given no indication to anyone over whether he will extend his stay at Bayern Munich, City have been working on signing him for three years, and sources say they are extremely confident they have done enough to secure his arrival once he leaves the Bundesliga.

Officials at the Etihad believe the opportunity to move the club onto a new level and do something "historic" greatly appeals to Guardiola, sources said. His pending arrival at City has been described as "the worst kept secret in football," reflecting the club's optimism in the situation.

A move to Old Trafford would involve a lot more work -- and potentially an overhaul of the squad.

There are many at United and at high levels of European football, however, who believe Guardiola is still enthused by the club's history and grandeur. The 44-year-old has reportedly brought up the subject at UEFA coaching meetings.

Sources also say United hope legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson -- a friend whom Guardiola greatly respects -- may yet prove persuasive. The two met to discuss the prospect of Guardiola taking the job in Autumn 2012, shortly before Ferguson retired.

United will not make any decision on replacing Van Gaal in the next few months, sources said, but the early Champions League elimination will be a huge factor in discussions over his future towards the end of the season.

In the meantime, United's next step will be to seek out a forward in the January transfer window to try and fix the team's chronic goal scoring problem.

I honestly think LVG has to win the title to stay in charge next season. And even that he has to turn things around quickly in the next couple of months.

Our financial forecasts were based on us atlas reaching the CL 1/4s wasn't it? or knockout rounds anyway. Woodward could easily use that as a reason to dismiss.

The whole notion of City 'working on him' paints a bit of a Grima Wormtongue-on-Theoden picture.

Next summer is too far away.... Get Ancelotti in now and we could actually win the title this year.

Hopefully, there is some truth on it, but I am afraid that like last time, we are too late.

If he is not available, bring Ancelotti.

The prize money for winning the EL is about the same as for reaching a 1/4s in CL. Just saying.

Logically it makes sense for Pep to come to us. . Great managers like Pep are attracted to historic clubs.

Think of yourself as a manager who wanted to go manage in Spain. . Hypothetically would you want to go to say a Valencia with lots of money and recent title winners or a chance to restore an ailing Barcelona to the top ( knowing that you'd have great freedom to do what you want and a guaranteed three years plus lots of money to bring in who you want).

If you have a genuine love for the game you'd be attracted to the more historic clubs in my opinion. He seems like the type of guy who finds that side of football important.

Dafuq does 'upgrading contact' even mean?

Were they paging each other before, and have now upgraded to WhatsApping? Or dare I even say a cheeky phone call?

Fancy us to leave it too late. Fecking knobs.

Sounds about right. The amount of quality we've let swan over to City over the past few years is absolutely scandalous.

Pep would just be the latest one that we'd come to greatly regret in the immediate future.

I just hope we somehow manage to get him.

Ah silver lining....
Moreover, even SAF hasn't won that, you know. Chance to make history.

In all seriousness though, I expect LVG to stay for next season if he wins a trophy and we get top 4. I don't think winning the league is a fixed objective this season.

Last week we were covering our ass because Pep is City bound, now this..
Media hurts my head. Both cannot be fecking true

If you were Guardiola, why would you come to OT?

Makes no sense

Yes and a 1000 times yes. Give him whatever he wants, he'll take us back to where we belong in a couple of seasons.

Because United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have a similar stature to his previous two clubs?

Edit - If you meant like why would someone leave Bayern for United then yeah I agree it's a bit mad but he seems to want to leave

That's funny, because sources close to ESPN tell me that they are full of bullshit and 'copies whatever is floating around on Twitter'.

You are just torturing yourselves. Pep aint coming to United.
Is Pep close to those ex Barca guys at City?

He's the perfect manager for getting City to the next level. Would be so annoying if he goes there

I always felt the Glazers would be a financial issue, it turns out that there selection of managers post saf have been their biggest problem for the club.

Jesus

Can we drop this nonsense about Man Utd being one of the biggest clubs in the world?

Irrelevant. If I was Guardiola I'd want to go to a club likely to win things.

Sad to say, but you lot are in intensive care.
