Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

yep absolutely. You practically never hear these days of a top player saying "I would be honoured and it would be an ambition realised to play for Manchester United". You do, however, hear that from players when talking about Real and Barca. You hear far more these days words to the effect of "I don't want to join Manchester United, I'm happy where I am". We're pretty low down on the list of clubs to play for and the sooner we realise that, the easier these transfer threads will become to bare!

All of this is true, and we've been too optimistic in the past. But give us a few years of success with van Gaal and, dare I say, two CL finals in a row (fantasy, I know) you have to admit that quite a few players would change their tune. The same applies to any team if they were able to do the same.

To be fair I wouldn't put weight on what players say. Its all about money these days.

yes, that is true, but certainly the days when players such as Bruce who said "I would walk bare footed from Norwich to Manchester to play for United" have long gone.

Having said that..yeah Brucie was not world class and you're right...he actually wouldn't walk barefooted that distance..

players eh? don't aft talk shite...

Can anyone imagine Woodward trolling everyone once the world cups over and all our business is done and just waiting to be announced? Yeah me neither.

Ah that was another time. We were the Real Madrid of the EPL back then and we could outbid anyone both in terms of fee and salary. Foreign based players who were used to a better salary then the one given at OT (Batistuta for example) weren't as keen to join us. It was also the golden age of CB. Bruce would be great in today's football but at that time he lagged behind the likes of Baresi, Blanc, Koeman and Bergomi.

Things had changed. The EPL is of course richer now however financially wise we're not the dominating force in it anymore.

It'll be interesting to see who we end up with. I never really believed this idea of us spending massive money but right not I can see us buying a couple of players, who will be from the second tier, and then doing another load of media spin about how next summer's the big one.

We would have to pay the £30m + 40% so that the player can activate his release clause. Which would mean signing him for £42m he is not worth that.
Better to try and negotiate a fee with the club.
Ah yeah, I forgot about the weird tax fee in Spain. Chelsea did the same, right? £31.9m for Costa?

You clearly don't know about Bilbao if you think we can negotiate with them. Meet the clause or walk away, also I doubt Herrera would risk it after what happened last time.

Haha my post was to do with release clauses and why people avoid activating them...

This is a shame and I know its not a god given right for us to be top dogs but the club have known this for years that we do not attract the top players any more, gone are those days - we should have addressed midfield issues regardless of us winning trophies. This is not all the clubs fault of course as some players will not even entertain living in England and lets be honest the best players in the world tend to be South American or foreign who are used to warmer climate. I very much doubt Ronaldo would have left Madrid for us in 2009 had the roles been reversed.
I do feel we offer very competitive salaries but our club from what I have often read does not entertain paying huge agent fees etc. SAF always alluded to his dislike of agents and I think this has cost us some big transfers in recent years.
The problem we now have is we have no SAF to work his miracles with decent and not so great players.
His aura and never say die attitude left with him also so I really hope LvG can instill some of this back into the team.
At the end of the day we need some very, very good players signed or we will continue to struggle, maybe now we will just be as ruthless and immoral as every other major club when it comes to transfers whether trying for a world class player or a lesser known player. We cant afford to dither expecting a lesser player to jump at the chance of joining us.

So our 200Million(rumoured) war chest leads us to a swap deal for Thomas Vermaelen? Well my view on Vermaelen is that if Van Gaal wants him then I trust his view. But I am hoping we get a lot better in before the window closes. Plenty of time still but my lack of trust in Ed Woodward remains as nothing has happened to change my view on him, yet. The future will tell.

Woodward has yet to show me anything.

Are you from Margate mate? As you're living in Dreamland :-) ;-)

Both were desperate signings. They don't really show his willingness to spend money, just that his incompetence left us with no choice.
He will spend big if/when needed. We lost on transfer targets before Hazard/Moura etc - but we moved on.. I am nervous with our transfer dealings but I have no doubt in my mind that Woodward/VG are planing for long term rather then just quick fix.

Maybe the club have to realise that. I am beginning to get the impression that they do believe the Manchester United name is enough when to foreign player it isn't.

Mata? Fellaini? :p
A Chelsea reject that was up for sale and a pretty horrid excuse for a footballer in Fellaini. We ended up paying around £4m more for him aswell, nothing short of an embarrassment for the club

I think we still have pulling power with English players. Unfortunately we have just come off our worst season in decades and foreign players want CL, money and it appears lifestyle.

I might be wrong... But don't most of the London-based players, in terms of club, actually live outside of London, towards more Surrey way?

The point I'm trying to make is that location and club are all secondary to money. Money, money, money. Anybody can get anybody if they offer enough, nowadays. If we bid right, offer enough, we can get whoever.

5-6 years living in Manchester, earning 100k+ a week, is hardly a chore, is it? Not to mention, we're the biggest club in the country, with the best stadium etc. One year out of the CL is hardly going to be a dissuasion to everything else we can provide.

They like having access to London as they can go out without being bothered by anyone. Manchester you sneeze and someone will let the club know.

It remains to be seen if its only one year without CL. Players know how important Ferguson was to this club and all the evidence from last season points to the fact that it could be years before we approach what we were under Ferguson. Whatever we want to say about Moyes now he had consistently done a good job at Everton yet was massively overawed by the work that needs to be done here. I can understand why players are cautious about locking themselves into 4 or 5 years here.

Chelsea reject? He was their player of the year for 2 years running and one of the best players in the premier league.

If Mata is a "Chelsea reject" then what does that make the rest of their team?

I agree, their fans were gutted to lose him. He was excellent under Benitez who set up the side to get the most out of him, he had Ramires and Luiz do the heavy work in the midfield which suited Mata. He was more of a Mourinho reject than a Chelsea reject as Jose won't tolerate what he considers a luxury player. Time will tell if the attacking quality Mata brings to us will help us catch Chelsea or will the uncompromising Mourinho build another side that continually finishes ahead of us.

Oh no you didn't !
