Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

No I think we need both. A new striker would be as much to push Rooney into performing as anything else although I would love an Adidas / Di Maria funded mega signing like Muller.

I agree in that we need a CB and a Striker. I'm willing to gamble on a lesser name striker if it meant we get a top class CB in.

Maybe, although I feel that we lack a truly world class attacker that all our rivals possess.

Someone of the quality of Ronaldo, Bale, Messi, Aguero, Suarez, Muller, etc.

Any of the above would do it, and as one of the biggest clubs in the world we should have a player of that magnitude up front not Benteke, Sakho or Rooney.

If things stayed exactly as they are now in terms of ins and outs, the 2nd XI from this 25 man squad would be as strong as some first teams we named last season:

This is an excellent side. Personally I would have Rojo > Jones and Mata > Di Maria but that shows how strong the squad is looking right now.

We are having a superb window. The last time I can remember being this happy about our business was when we signed Nani, Anderson, Hargreaves and Tevez and promptly won the league + CL...

How would people feel if we dont sign another defender and striker ?
Can we manage with what we have ?

The rest of our business has been so good that I think we will do great next season even without any more signings (provided we keep De Gea).

Van Gaal and Woodward though, they have been relentless! If they feel we need more players I have absolute confidence we will get them. No nonsense about there being no value in the market, no crap about cows in other fields not being as good as the cow in your field. Just accurate assessment of our weaknesses and then strong signings to address them.

Di Maria in top form.

A new striker is now actually more critical than a CB I reckon. We have numbers in defense at least, especially with Carrick.
I think it's difficult because whoever we sign as a CB will be first choice so we can afford to target them however we choose. With the striker they're going to be either backup to Rooney or Rooney will be moved to midfield which I can't see happening with our recent acquisitions in that area. Signing a backup to Rooney is necessary I agree cause we're short on numbers but we'll have to be more selective, I can't imagine a £50-60m Harry Kane being on the bench too often when fit for example.

It is difficult. What kind of a player wants to come and play second fiddle to a striker who cannot be dropped if he is fit? In that sense Wilson is perfect, but if something does happen to Rooney we have a serious headache on our hands. Mind you, Memphis I think can play up front. I think Mata could do a job up front as well. So maybe it isnt such a problem after all.

I still cant help but think we will want to bring in real quality there. Id like someone to give Rooney real competition, and for his place not to be a given. Not that I doubt Rooney's ability to get into the team on merit. Always rated him up front and think he has plenty more to offer. But I dont think having undroppable players is healthy, especially not up front.

Couldn't agree more. I'm hoping a large part of his undroppable status last year was due to the absolute lack of leaders we had in the squad, with someone like Schweinsteiger in maybe LVG will be a bit harsher on Rooney's contributions. Still if he does play how we know he can then he shouldn't be dropped anyway and we'd still have the headache.

Probably best that we target either a striker who's flexible enough to play across the forward line (like Lacazette) or someone who United would be such a step up they'd be content with having a squad role at first with a view to taking over long term (Benteke?).

It's been a brilliany transfer window so far and I'm certain we'll get in a top CB. The striker situation is more tricky, I hope we don't ruin this muppet high with Benteke or Cavani.

Who's next on the radar now? I really hope the next signing doesn't take too long. I've gotten used to quick deals

The weekend was the key deadline, to get players to the tour.
I was flabbergasted to wake up to Schneiderlin being done. In fact I skim read it as Schweinsteiger still.

Probably a fair gap to the next signing now. And potentially any next signings will be the ones that decide whether we're really competing for things or just making a step up from this year.
Stiker/CB

A prolific goal scorer is certainly needed, I don't think the current options can be relied upon. Complete guess, but I think we'll sell Di Maria and bring in a young striker to supplement (and hopefully one day supplant) Rooney, and a higher profile wide forward type to play on the wing.

Then it's the small matter of a top class centre back...

Need:
LCB - Veteran or star next to Smalling - Otamendi or Ramos. If neither, it's a tough call where else to look.

May still have to replace:
Hernandez - Backup 9 - if Di Maria goes, then Cavani could come back on loan as part of the deal and still be sold by PSG in 2016 with 2 years left to go on his deal or simply plugged into his favorite number 9 role with Zlatan flirting with Serie A this summer and leaving next. Everyone is sort of happy.

De Gea - Starting Keeper - Leno or Oblak; Someone under 30 who is already good enough and likely to improve.

Di Maria - Starting Right Wing - If we've got the massive Bale erection I suspect, not sure what would happen here.

Everything else is set, though signing a great 16-17 year old a la Pogba from Le Havre or Sterling from QPR is always worth a go.

Keep DDG this summer, replace him next summer, the striker situation is a rock and a hardplace, but the priority right now is a CB.

Otamendi next please.

Then we can think about a striker or Ramos if still possible.

We need luck with injuries and a manager who can get the maximum from the 100 players he now has at his disposal :)

Say this £150m to spend is correct, surely this is a realistic summer.

£20m Memphis
£25m Schneiderlin
£12m Schweinsteiger
£30-35m Otamendi
Up to £20m on any RB

Which has us spending £112m, so £38m left over. Let's assume we get £20m from Nani, Hernandez and Evans. Puts us up to £58m.

Whatever De Gea goes for, we spend on his replacement.

Van Persie goes for something inconsequential.

That leaves us with £58m to spend on a striker which is all we'd really need at that point. In my opinion £58m gets us any striker we could realistically buy ie. Not Aguero or Suarez etc.

I don't think any of those transfers in or out would be unrealistic. Ive plucked Schweinsteiger's fee out of my arse but I wouldn't say it's far off what anyone would pay for him. And okay, say he's not available it's not the end of the world. Still leaves us with £70m to spend on a CM and striker with midfield options of Carrick, Blind, Fellaini, Schneiderlin and Herrera.

I'm honestly sat here thinking everything I've just said is realistic and would give us a squad capable of seriously challenging next season. Someone tell me I'm wrong?

When will I have children? And will ever get to bed Adriana Lima?!

I was just thinking about this the other day. It's worked out quite well really, and even spent less on our RB than I budgeted for.

I might have to factor in Di Maria leaving as well now... :nervous:

If di Maria goes then we lose pace so someone like Reus would be a good player amazed no one has moved for him. Seems like we keep trying for Bale but it's not gonna happen. Maybe there is something in the Gaitan rumours. As a striker Lewandowski is up there with the very best.

Having just done my squad for the forthcoming season I feel the remaining priority for this window should be a CB (I suspect Otamendi is a done deal) and a GK (we need to set a deadline to which DDG isn't allowed to leave afterwards)

We don't need a Di Maria replacement and ok we're a major Rooney injury away from having a problem but you can't have a 30m+ striker on the bench for a what if and its for this reason RVP should have been kept around

He'll have a striker in mind without a doubt, he wouldn't let RVP go otherwise. We were linked with Felipe Anderson a while back and I can see us going for him if Di Maria leaves.

CB and striker are necessities. If we want a crack at the league then we definitely need to bring in another forward.

We NEED a striker who can deputise for Rooney for at least 15-20 games, including in the CL. We also NEED another option who can provide goals from the wing, since we'll be playing with 3 midfielders and none are especially prolific. Finally, we NEED to replace the pace that Di Maria has, since it's looking increasingly like he's on his way...

With all that in mind, what we need is a wide forward who won't necessarily be first choice ahead of Rooney, Depay or Mata, but will be in rotation with all of them. Ideally a single signing will be able to provide all of that. I'm looking at Reus but surely other pacey, goalscoring wide forwards must exist.

A goalie and a CB would also be nice.

If we sell Di Maria. Just put that money to Reus or Griezmann and keep Hernandez.

Looks perfect to me. And only 22.

United seems to have an overly bureaucratic transfer process, probably the longest in the world - from the time it takes to chase a player to the initial enquiry to the press conference where the players are unveiled.

Dont get me started on the time it takes for a player to even get to carrington, do other fans even track flights?

Well, did you ever try to consider preparing a bid? It's a ton of work...

Seriously though, we can't really complain this window, swift business so far.
