Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

Assuming Van Gaal converts back to his favoured 433 formation, I'd say:

Centre Back

A no nonsense defender, who can lead our youngish back four.

Centre midfielder

Preferably an all rounded box to box midfielder. In midfield, we currently have:

Carrick (Holding)
Blind (Holding)
Rooney (Box to box)
Fletcher (Holding)
Mata (Box to box)
Fellaini (Box to box)
Herrera (Box to box)

I haven't included Di Maria because I feel Van Gaal will play him on the wing, therefore, next season we'll have 7 midfielders to cover 3 positions. However, I expect the players above in bold not to be here next season, being replaced by one midfielder, giving us 6 midfielders (2 holders and 4 box to box) to cover 3 positions, with maybe a couple of youngsters as back up.

I know Mata has been really good of late, but I don't feel he's suited to the box to box role. As for Fletcher, well, I think it's safe to say his best years are behind him, unfortunately.

Personally, I think that box to box player will be Strootman, who can also cover the holding role if Carrick and Blind are injured/rested, leaving us with the options of:

Carrick
Blind
Fellaini
Rooney
Herrera
Strootman

In my opinion, we could make two very strong midfield combinations with the midfielders above:

Carrick
Strootman - Rooney

Blind
Fellaini - Herrera

Winger
At the moment, we have two wingers in Januzaj and Di Maria, who are able to play at the top level on the wing, although the latter is argaubly better in midfield. Therefore, I feel we need at least one top class winger in the Summer, who can create and score goals. It seems that Bale and Reus are being mentioned. I think either one of these will take us to another level.

The priority obviously has to be defenders. If we can throw in a central midfielder, then well and good.

If we don't sign at least one centre back in January then I'd be surprised although we need two minimum.

As for the summer, add a right back, central midfielder and winger to that

Isn't two new DC, Jones, Smalling, Evans, Rojo, McNair, Blackett and Keane too much for only PL and FA Cup?

We need right back and winger with pace! Similar player to Hazard.

Aside from the individual gaps in the squad, it feels like we just need a bit more athleticism in the side; more pace up front and out wide, more physicality and energy in midfield, and some robust defenders with decent aerial ability at the back. We're too slow and too soft.

Well, McNair and Blackett aren't strong enough and Keane isn't even at Utd so that's 3 off the list!

Get Nani back, sign Strootman and Schar.

DDG
Rafael - Schar - Smalling - Shaw
Carrick - Strootman
Nani - Rooney - Di Maria
Falcao

Think we will convert to a 433 and it will be
DDG
RB
Smalling
Rojo
Shaw
Carrick
Cm
Rooney
Di Maria
Pacey Winger type
RVP

Problem with going 433 is it leaves Falcao/RvP on the bench assuming Rooney is one of the deeper three. Di Maria out wide where he isn't as effective, and £38m Mata is probably Rooneys back up in that system.

Plus we'd need to sign at least two wingers, one starter and another to help cover.

We need wingers. Januzaj and ADM are our only first team quality wingers at the moment. Personally I hope Nani comes back ASAP but even so we could do with another good winger, someone like Reus.

If we don't buy a player who can beat a man and score, then it's a Jan waste and more boring football relying on individual class.

RB - Coleman/Clyne/Fernandes, I don't give a shit, just get one.
CB - Hummels and Schar
CM - Barkley and Strootman
Forward - Depay/Lacazette/Lucas Moura

Bare minimum is a rb, cb, cm, winger and a striker:

Clyne or Coleman
Varane or marquinhos
Schneiderlein
Reus or depay
Dybala or lacazette

That is the kind of window we need and even then I think we could still need another cb, more cover at fullback, another cm and winger.

A CB, a fullback, a CM that can pick out a pass ala Alonso, a winger and probably a young and pacey striker. so yeah half a team.

2 cb's , a rb and a lb or one dennis irwin that can play both. a pacy striker who can put the ball away.

Clyne, Hummels, Strootman, Reus and a LB backup. Maybe even a striker - Lacazette, you could argue that we need 2 CB's. It is going to be expensive no matter what.

Coleman, Kurzawa, Varane, Laporte, Strootman, Depay, Dybala.

Good list. Why do you all think we need a left-back suddenly? I mean Shaw has had his injuries, but previous seasons suggest he's not as bad as Rafael, Evans, Jones or Smalling in that regard. We also have Rojo, Blackett and Blind to cover there and I think that's fine. Priorities should be the aforementioned positions.

Unless things suddenly change I imagine we will be in for a RB this summer and I am now of the opinion LvG will bring in 2 CB's between now and the summer, ones tailor made to how he wants to play.

If the plan is to move to 4-3-3 I think we could do with a couple more CM's so as to completely avoid Rooney having to play there.

If the above happens I think one new forward player to replace RvP and Falcao would be the way to go, with Rooney back full time as a striker and chances for Wilson and Januzaj to play amongst the front 3 with Di Maria a regular fixture on the right side of the front 3.

So in my muppet world (Bar Strootman as I think it's inevitable):

CB - Hummels
CB - Dragović (Varane would be my choice but I get the feeling this one will happen next week)
RB - Coleman
CM - Strootman
CM - Pogba/Gundogan/Isco/Barkley
Forward - Dybala/Lacazette/Depay

Personally i just want two players for every position, and the players should all play their best position. But i agree that it is down the list.

I'd be pretty happy with this, but I think Woodward will want his muppet signing for the Summer to, that's why this Bale talk wouldn't actually surprise me. Maybe Pogba would be classed as the muppet signing though. Suspect we might be in for a new backup GK to Valdes to should Dave leave which I really hope doesn't happen.

That would take a ridiculous amount of money. I know we can spend a lot, but I think they will still have a limit.

Basically the same reason as above for me too. Ideally it would be someone who's more experienced than Shaw who wouldn't mind being a back up but I couldn't think of anyone like that so I put in Kurzawa because we were linked to him a while ago. If we got two centre backs I wouldn't mind Rojo there if Shaw was missing but we'll need him in centre if we can only sign one centre back.

Confidence of champions.

As long as Cavani is not his muppet buy, that would piss me off, he peaked at Napoli.

I don't see it costing us much more than last summer especially if the Austrian lad is bought in the next week for the reported £12M.

CB, Rb, Pogba, and a winger plz.

4-3-3

Rafael*-Jones*-Rojo-Shaw
----------Blind
-----Fellaini*---Hererra
Nani*-------------Di Maria
---------Rooney

Rafael is injury prone
It's unlikely that the penny will drop with our defenders.
Pogba to signal intent
A winger so we have enough options at 4-3-3

Alternatively, a DM so we can play Mata in the hole with a midfield of Hererra-DM

Yeah, that's fair. I prefer an experienced left-back as well, but I don't see it either. Hopefully we bring in 2 centre-halves, so that Rojo would be enough. Laporte would be the best signing for central defence IMO.

Well, since you all went full muppet, I'm going along with it. My list:

Danilo, Laporte, Strootman, Schneiderlin, Depay, Dybala

No idea who the second centre-half would or should be. Johannes Geis is another player I definitely wouldn't mind, if he'd sign for us.

Frustratingly, I think we as fans know who to sign, more so than the board.
What I mean by that is, it's clear for example we lack pace, adding somebody like Falcao is adding a player relatively similar to RVP, when clearly it would be beneficial if we added pace up front. Anyway, we need, in my opinion:

RB: Clyne
CB: Hummels
CM: Strong defensive midfielder
LW: Reus (Probably off to Real Madrid)
ST: Lacazette

De Gea
Clyne - Hummels - Defender* - Shaw
DM - Herrera
Di Maria - Rooney - Reus
Lacazette
I could only dream to see us play this, with this formation, and actually play some quick and decisive counter attack football.
*I think any of Jones, Smalling and Rojo could play here, and it would be much better having the quality of Hummels next to them

We basically still need about half a team.

Its amazing what a state Fergie and Moyes let this squad get into.

If I was in charge I'd be looking to bring in a RB, CB, CM and a pacey attacker who can play across the front three. Pretty much what a lot of other people are looking for and not too tall an order either, I think.

Who we sell is just as important though. We need to rebalance the squad which will mean making some tough decisions. For example, I wouldn't keep Falcao and would sell one of RVP or Mata (preferably RvP).

It's true that he could have done better particularly in midfield, but I think he really believed in the team he had and didn't think that they would do that badly without him.
