Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

Along with the obvious (CB) we need pace and directness in this team, someone who can run at players and beat them consistently.

It would be massive if we could get Schneiderlin, Coleman and Cuadrado in January. I would wait till the summer to get that world class CB. We shouldn't go near Vlaar even with a barge pole.

Fletcher, Anderson, Mata, Fellaini, Rafael, Evans - all need to leave in January or by the summer.

I think Shawcross would be a great addition to our back line. He would give us some leadership there. Very mobile and tidy player who I think would be an upgrade on anything we currently have.
I guess many won't agree though!
A January window of him and Coleman would see us fine and cement 3rd.

Would absolutely love him back here. Adds steel to our defence. Only problem is that I'm not sure how we he would do playing the ball out of defence.

"Cover" for RB?

Rafael hasn't had a single season here where he has started more than half of league games.

He has a track record of consistent injury.

We need a first choice RB.

At least one top quality CB.

A top quality winger with skills and pace (another Di Maria basically).

Probably a CM too.

Basically another massive summer.

Shawcross just isn't better than what we got. I'm sure Jones and Smalling would look as good or better at Stoke. Totally different playing centre back for us, when you asked to push up and do more with the ball.

We should really go for one of the Atletico pair.

Yep we need to be aiming much higher than Shawcross ffs.

We need speed and power through the team. Chris Smalling staying fit would provide both at centre-half, although we could still use another.

I would also like us to sign a 'dominant' central midfielder. Not 'the new Scholes', I want a powerful, tough player who can also chip in with 10+ a season. A Gerrard or Yaya in their prime. I've seen Pogba rumours resurface, he is probably the young player out there with the most potential of this kind. He'd probably be my pick, although I am romantically involved with Kovacic so wouldn't say no.

Lastly, I would like a fast goal threat in attack, be that at centre-forward or out wide. The type of strikers we typically have is part of what makes our style less attractive than the best. Persie is always contending for balls in the air etc, that is the sort of service we give him. Sterling isn't a proper striker, but if you watch how Liverpool dismantled Swansea, it was high speed and balls were being played down the side of him and he was stretching them. Your typical centre-half would always prefer a physical/aerial challenge than having someone pulling them everywhere at speed. James Wilson could yet be this player, but on current evidence, I'd say he's at least a year away.

Ultimately, I think 3 top players from back to front would propel us to Chelsea's level. A strong (fit) centre-half, a powerful midfielder and a direct attacking threat.

A more reliable right-back may also be an option we'd have to consider due to Rafael's fitness concerns, although I think Valencia has proven adequate cover this season.

Mata? Really? He's been very good of late and stats wise has benn great since we got him. Fellaini is an option and i think should also stay.

Edit: i don't have a particular problem with the 3-5-2, it's just that it's a very specialized system, almost all the players needs to be specialist except the middle CB.

You think the middle CB is the same or easier than CB in a pair? Think again.

It depends, if we are talking about the ball playing middle CB than no, he is also a specialist. But you don't have to play with a ball playing CB, you can play with a Deep lying midfielder, like juventus with Pirlo granted that Bonucci, Caceres and Chiellini are good on the ball.

But if i interpret, well. You are right in Van gaal 352 each and every player is a specialist, which is my problem.

People will always be unsatisfied with Mata it seems. He's been very good statistically and has been very good in our last two games before Stoke. Mata does suffer from the lack of pace in our front line though. He's the type of player who thrives on threading balls into the runs from pacy players, and our style of play coupled with lack of pace up front means he has to take the safe option more often than not.

We need a CB and a RB (RWB) first and we need a box to box midfielder! If I had to pick 1 position we should concentrate on more then any that has to be the CB position!

RB - Coleman/Clyne
CB x2 - Chielini/Hummels/Godin
CM - Strootman/Schneiderlin
Pacy Winger - Depay/Cuadrado/Reus
Pacy Striker (If we don't sign Falcao) - ???

It's not just the ball-playing but the positioning and defensive awareness. The central CB has to have an exceptional reading of the game. Any random CB won't do, not at all.

Giorgio Chielini is available on a free in the summer. Might be able to get him for a low price if he's willing to leave Juventus.

I would take Ross Barkley in a heartbeat too. I have said for a while that I think he will end up as an 8, and I can see him developing into a Toure like player. Great power with and without the ball, great shot off either foot, can run from the centre of the park.

Him, Pogba or Kovacic will make me sleep better than Alexis Texas does.

I see what mean, but in my eyes that's not a "specialist" attribute, he is still a CB without extra abilities, he "just" needs to be good at covering his teammates that's not a rare ability.
A centerback who can defend like a fullback, who can shut the wide channels is a rare attribute.

If i use the Juventus example Chiellini and Caceres, have played the fullback position and are good at it, despite the fact that they are CBs, Bonucci is less comfortable there.

Now you are right, you can't take any random CB, you need one who is a good reader of the game.

Schneilderlin/Strootman + A top CB is an absolute must in the winter window. We are just too inconsistent and in no way guaranteed a top 4 finish. I'd rather pay the premium for players in January than risk not being in the CL next season where the prize money increases by plenty££££ due to the new TV deals.

I know it's incredibly difficult to sign 3 or more players in January, but too much is at stake right now, so if we can nab Coleman of a struggling Everton side, it could improve us massively.

Unless we can get an outstanding defender, I'd rather wait until the summer. Same with midfield. I'd take a right back though, Clyne would be nice with his versatility.

Is there no youngster coming through who is better than Fletcher for our midfield when Blind, Carrick and Herrera aren't fit?

I'd definitely like us to bring in a #8 of this type.

Gotta be a porn star.

EDIT:  Just checked, and yes, that's a porn star. That last line when read in the context of her being a porn star!

At this stage, nothing.

The current squad is more than good enough to take us to third; It's unlikely we'll win the league from here, no top class players will move in Jan. We don't need to be adding stop gap players to the wage bill on 3 year contracts.

Do nothing now, spend in the summer.

However, we should take the chance to shift some unneeded players if we can.

Hernández hasn't exactly shone at Madrid and the chances of them taking up the purchase option seem remote, we need to be lining up a transfer for him now. Same with Nani. We don't want these guys getting on a plane back to Manchester in mid July.

Pay Anderson whatever it takes to just go away now.

I don't agree with those who say that our strike force is slow. I'd say our midfield is slow and we never seem to control the games from begining to end because of that. I still think that we don't have that box to box midfielder that can get the ball back with ease. I really think that we need to improve that. Mind you, Blind is injured and Carrick us 34. Fellaini is a different type of player and to be honest i'm not convinced with Herrera yet.

What about cb's, you can't seem to find any world class centre backs anymore these days.

This 2-deep looks good to me

RVP-Hernandez
Rooney-Mata
DiMaria-Januzaj
WF Transfer-Nani
Herrera-CM Transfer
Blind-Carrick
Shaw-Young
Rafael-FB Transfer
LCB Transfer
-Rojo
Smalling-Jones
DeGea-Backup Keeper Transfer

and then Wilson, Pereira, Fletcher, Blackett, one of Mcnair/Keane (other loaned), Evans and a 3rd keeper complete the squad.

Honestly we don't NEED to buy anyone in January but I'm sure we would like to. I can only see a RB and a CB coming in if we do make any signings but even then we need starters in each of those areas and they aren't always available in January.

In my opinion Clyne is overrated and Southampton wont sell cheap. Coleman is better but older and we'll have the same problem with Everton, so if we want bang for our buck we need to be looking towards Europe for players.

A RB as cover and competition for Rafael and a commanding CB to organise and lead the defence. I think we have enough players coming through who have the potential to eventually fill the other areas of the squad.

i agree with Jon B....

i'm fully expecting some of Shaw, Rafael, Jones, Smalling and Evans to pick up strains and knocks - they've done it consistently and I'd be amazed if they are all available for a prolonged period....

with Young out we've decent cover with Blackett, Blind and Rojo when he comes back

at right back we've only an injured Valencia really...not great depth so cover here would be great

I think a strong CB would enable us to play 2 at the back and address the imbalance in the squad - our defensive record is good, thanks largely to the numbers back there and De Gea but I dont think we are scoring enough goals or creating enough chances....

I don't expect an attacking player to come in but someone to add creativity and pace to our attack would be fantastic

RB/LB cover - Clyne, fast and useful striker or rather someone who can be a winger after we switch to 4-3-3, so Depay would come to mind and Reus but it's a summer transfer target.. one defensive minded midfielder, could be box to box, who can actually run and is felt as physical presence, someone who will not walk the pitch like carrick but someone who can actually add more drive we are missing in the midfield, some leader. Strootman comes to mind but we obviously need to wait how he recovers. I think we are good with CB if they are fit, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Keane, maybe one world class leftie or swap evans for Shawcross who is right footed?
