That still requires £40m to cover Pogba's signing, likely much more.

I don't think that way at all, his game is heavily based on his physical attributes and he won't keep it up until his late 30s. He might have one or two more seasons at high level but then it's over.
Spine is the way to go. Pogba and Hummels would be make us hardcore!

Personally I'd like to see us been a bit more savvy in the market this summer, our main issue is to get a proper CB in & a top midfielder in, but three other areas of concern are a LB, a winger, & a striker.
To fill these three I'd like to see Alves, Depay, and Ings, it is not unrealistic to get this lot for about £20-£25 million with contract situations etc, wages about £300 k p/w combined, to pay for it we drop Falcao, sell Nani £12, then add in the money we took in January.
So we could spend nothing & have change left over in the wages to fill 3 positions, & lose 2 players we don't really need, leaving us almost our full kitty to get the 2 other players we need.

Modric will cost a lot more than 40 million IMO. One of the best midfielders in the world right now. Same with Godin, his release clause is 30 something million I believe. Reus and Bale I feel will also cost more than what you have them down as.
All in all, if we want to get even a few of those names you mentioned, we will have to be willing to spend a lot of money this window.
I could understand, if it was true, he is playing well, he only played once on the wing, everyone upfront spend little bit of time on the bench and he is one of the most used players.
That’s why I think that we have to get the likes of Vidal AND Strootman, rather than having Pogba only or Bale.
I mean 45M for Hummels is near the truth, having Alves free is better than Coleman for 20M. I would rather have Strootman and Vidal for 60/70M both and making a last big push for Reus, as for him, I think that if we had Di Maria (champions League winner, Vice world champ…) for 75M, I guess Reus is near 50/60M…

I didn't realise Lewandowski was out of favour at Bayern. An absolute must get if he is available. These are the areas where we need an upgrade.. it is scary but 5/7 areas I'd say we absolutely need an upgrade rather than it just being a nice addition. RB, CB, CM, AM, wings and up front.. we are genuinely lacking quality and dynamism in those areas.

He played one game against Schalke as a winger, and Guardiola don't use the same forwards in CL and Bundesliga.
The same way Götze and Müller were out of favour last year when they had to come from the bench once or twice. It's a huge squad, sometimes players are having bad spells or are used out of position, it's no big deal. Lewandowski started 3 out of 5 games this year, was subbed in in the other 2 and only once was used as a wide forward from the left (he didn't play as a left winger like some claim). Hardly a big problem.

No one is saying all those names are gettable, but that is the positions and the calibre of players we need to be getting in. If I had to restrict myself, Clyne, Schneiderlin/CM, Eriksen, Bale .. would be my focus. I would ship out RVP, Falcao and Mata.. possibly get one more year out of Rooney (though I'd prefer to bring a striker in as well).
i think we need a left back (cover for Shaw) and 2 proper right backs, at least 1 of them world class.

Every single big team is build up starting from the back. So as long we don't have proper fullbacks, we gonna keep suffering. Centre-backs are not the issue.

I agree about the RB, but if LvG wants us to build up play from the back he needs CB's who are comfortable on the ball and can come out with it. Also that they can stay fit for a majority of the season. I think he will sacrifice at least one of the CB's.
Most of the CBs also cannot stay fit, so it definately is an issue. If you're going to write off Rafael, then Jones & Smallings injury records also need to be looked at. Also Evans has been piss poor this season. Playing out from the back too, I think we definately need to make a CB signing for it to work properly.
