Manchester United Sign Anthony Martial!

Why are people bothered about the fee? We have spent about £30m after our sales, and if money isn't spent; where do you think it goes? Into the back pockets of our owners and shareholders.

Lets get behind this signing. He's an unknown entity and it's exciting.

My only issue is that because LVG prefers players to be extremely disciplined in terms of posession; how will he manage a player who looks to take gambles.

Who knows what will happen but I'm pretty confident.....very confident actually that Martial will be a big, big player for us and will make his mark in world football at the least. I can see Wilson doing ok at a low-mid table club or in the championship. We'll see what happens but I am certain that Martial has a considerable amount more potential.

Im pretty confident he was an Arsenal target and Henry was probably tapping him up for Wenger. But Arsene being Arsene shat himself at the price. If Martial was a soft attacking mid he would have paid for him.

Some people think he won't even play this season? :wenger:

If you're not sure what this lad is about, please watch this video. I did, and instantly felt a lot better...

The kid looks quality.

Stonewall penalty there not given.

Whilst a goal against pool would be great for the lad ive also got to think, what happens if Pool beat us. After Swansea, after the De Gea mess, after everything. Cant see thay going down at all well. Lets prey we beat em aye lads.
pool defense was shambles against west ham and they'll be without coutinho. we should be able to beat them confidently and serious questions will deservedly be asked if we don't take full 3 points.

Night and day from the sort of stuff we have to put with in Rooney. Pace, strength, good dribbling and passing? Feck me. Give him the armband.

As everyone knows you can't guarantee anything from a highlight video but if he simply brings the fundamentals that he shows in that video, then he's comfortably a higher threat than anyone else we have bar Depay.

How the hell did that 4th official not give the Penalty there!

Shades of Welbeck in his style, even though he looks more skilful and has better dribbling and perhaps pace. For that fee, he's obviously going to be far superior in front of goal and a natural goal scorer too. Exciting prospect.

   I actually thought people were joking when they said that SSN were actually using Football Manager stats as a method of analysis on players. Do they possess no shame? Was it tounge-in cheek or were they actually taking it seriously?

Yes, but the FM scouting system is almost certainly the most widespread and comprehensive in world football. Several clubs use it to aid their own scouting too.

Raw as feck, but the kids got talent, that much is obvious. Clear to see why he's highly rated in France.

I also like the fact that he seems to have a bit of vision about him, he's not just aimlessly going for goal every time, but picking out teammates who are better placed. That bodes well that he's not just all about power and pace, but that he has an 'intelligent' player too.

Stonewall penalty there not given.

What is even the point of the ref's assistant on the goal line there, if he's not going to see that?

Man, just realised, Martial wasn't even born when Everton beat us in the FA cup in 95.

When have those ref assistants ever gotten anything right?

It might be my mind playing tricks on me, but it seems like the ref gets crucial decisions wrong more frequently when there are extra refs behind the goal. They're useless.

What must James Wilson be thinking about this signing? I mean, they are both the same age and play in the same position, although I think Van Gaal will play Martial out wide for most of this season.

An attacker with skill and pace is what we need. Very excited and hope he starts ahead of Rooney.

It's weird though, if we persist with Rooney up top, Martial, Wilson, Memphis, and Young are all scratching for minutes on the left wing. Maybe Young plays right more this year?

Still though, in a few years this potential line could be dangerous as feck....

Wilson----
Martial----Januzaj*----Memphis
*If he comes back. :(

left? I see him on the right. Depay's on the left. Mata could be moved inside.

I guess thy could swap back and forth. It's just that in the clips, Martial didn't look as effective on the right, where as Memphis has a mean cross, and has looks good for us the moments he found himself wide right.

Apparently a lot are saying long term Memphis is a 10, too. We've got some smashing wonderkids, but it's all still very unbalanced. They all seem capable in all 4 slots(barring Wilson maybe), but all seem to want 10 or 9,

I think he'll play as a #9 so that Rooney can play deeper as he doesn't look like he enjoys the #9 role and struggles to provide the constant movement required in the role.

Van Gaal called him multifunctional... :nervous:

Like those fax machines of yesteryear.

Herrera vs Martial for the No. 10 spot?

This hasn't been mentioned but it strikes me as plausible considering that Van Gaal doesn't seem to love Mata or Herrera there, Rooney looks immobile and lacking a decent first touch some of the time and our only good attacking performances of the season have involved Memphis out left.

The thing I like, at least from the few minutes highlight videos, is that even at that young age, for someone with pace to burn and good dribbling skills, he is pretty aware of his teammates and always looking up to see if anyone is available. When does run though, he is already pretty strong and keeping the ball close to his feet. Nothing flashy ala young Ronaldo, but effective.

That'd be nice, maybe it'd work like Chicha's first run up front with Rooney in behind, though Martial is a very different player.

I saw him quite a few times for Monaco last season and Martial's movement is good so he'll make some of those Hernandez style runs and he holds the ball up well so I imagine once LvG has been coaching him for a couple of months he'll be proficient in the fundamentals of the role of #9 as LvG likes it played. The big worry is that while Rooney might enjoy having more freedom as the #10, his passing, touch and lack of dribbling don't make him ideal in the role.

I can't wait for the headlines after his first goal for United. "Martial Lays Down the Law".

Watching his movement in those vids, it's very impressive, has a knack for finding the right spot or space.

Definitely, he's sharp and aware, plus when he gets the ball he doesn't run down blind alleys if there are better options to pass to, his performances always seemed pretty mature to me. I'm not trying to oversell him, as I said in the other thread he'll need time, but like Memphis there is plenty of obvious talent to work with and his pace and athletic build are ideal for the PL.

You can see he's raw, but there's definitely a nice dose of "it" waiting to be unlocked. It'll click one day and he'll be a monster.

I am surprised many people have not heard of him. Been my 'get him for cheap and watch him grow' signing in FIFA 14 and FIFA 15.

Give him time (which media and some silly fans won't just because of the price tag) and have patience. He and Depay will be a coup at the price we bought them

I remember when we signed Anderson and there were plenty of videos going round showing how good he was and how he was the next Ronaldinho.

Anderson was actually very good. The injury before he transferred feck and a person he was very lazy to work on himself.
