Shocking if Jones still survives.

A joke if we sell Bailly ahead of calamity Jones.

Probably more defensive reinforcements

Upamecano and/or Partey please. (Probably end up with Slab Head)

Sell Jones and Rojo and bring in one 1 decent center halves. We don’t need 5 very average CB’s

Leicester do not need to sell Maguire and that is probably good for all concerned. JM would destroy him with his terrible coaching techniques .

Another signing, another top player doing well before we buy him, and then regressing rapidly and inexplicably while starting ahead of a getting-into
-form-because-of-a-run-of-games teammate, and who'll eventually be benched for next year's Derby.

Mourinho won more league than 19 other managers combine. We need trophy, who care about playing style? in the end of the day, trophy count.

And 100m ? to get an average players ? he need at least 400m. Dembele (Winger) Pulisic (AM) Leon Goretzka (CM) and Toby Alderweireld (CD) are considered moving, they cost 300m at least.

He is still the best option, keep him and give 300-400m to let him prove himself.

He was backed the first season, 2017 summer he wanted Perisic and Woodward didn't back him and last summer he got 1 first team signing (so 2 short from what he wanted reportedly). So no, I wouldn't say he has been entirely backed. Saying that, if Mourinho wanted experienced players who were close to already being on the decline, then I can see why the board didn't back that. But that should have been made clear months before the transfer window opened so that players who fit what both Mourinho and the board wanted could be targeted. A DOF could well be the solution for that but that discussion is for another thread.
Woodward tried to sign Perisic, but he (rightfully) won't pay stupidly over-the-top prices. That's why that transfer saga went on for so long as we were hoping Inter would come down to what we felt was a realistic price. Same thing with most of those defenders that we were linked to last transfer window.

You could say that Woodward isn't backing him entirely, but at the same time it's not like Woodward has been straight up saying that he wouldn't sign these players. I see the word 'veto' used a lot in these discussions (not by you, just in general), which always annoys me as it paints a much more divided picture than I think is reality. Every club will of course have a limit to how much they are willing to pay for each individual player, and we've simply been hitting that limit lately. Whether that is because we're not moving with the current economic situation, whether it's because we are targeting the wrong players who can't be signed for realistic prices, or whether it's because we have a stigma of overpaying so these selling clubs are trying to take us for a ride and Woodward is trying to reign that in...who knows. Probably a combination of all three.

I wouldn't sell Eric just yet. Should be Darmian and Rojo imho.

The thing is I reckon if the targets fit our profile (i.e. not old and expensive), I think we will spend some money, provided they are attainable, and another manager would be able to use them.

Otherwise, it's a waste of money when he won't be here after this season.

I do not care if they have to spend it all on one player, get a midfield general, we need someone to run out game.

Mourinho would still play Matic over him:D

At this point, forget new signings, I'd be very happy if we just didn't hear news or rumours of the club extending or renewing contracts of aging and mediocre players.

Yes another Jose thread but it looks like he’s here to stay, at least for now anyway.

Jamie Jackson reporting it and a few others from the Manchester area so it’s obviously a leak from the club.

I’m not happy with this personally. Would rather we save all transfer money for the next manger. But it does explain why Jose has been in a far better mood of late. Well, by his standards anyway.

I don’t know if this is a bad or good thing. And every opponent in January knowing we have 100 mill to burn?

I don’t like it.

If only there was a thread on this in the transfer forum.
If only you could reply with a non sarcastic reply and say “Hey new guy, there is a transfer forum, thread is already there.”

This isn’t news. The club will always have that sort of money on hand if the opportunity arises.

Whether a player will become available in January that fits the profile is the bigger question.

What is the point from not backing him in the summer but backing him now and trust him buy again? Most of the players he has signed are shit.

I think he'll get a CB in Jan. Probably not the ones people want because they wont be available. But someone expensive who hopefully wont be out on their ass when a new manager comes in.
I reckon he'll get a CB in January as well, similar to how we got Sanchez last Jan when Perisic wasn't signed. However, we should only be signing one that will improve us quality wise and not just for the sake of it.

Yeah that's a fair point. City did the same thing a few years ago and put their foot down with clubs trying to extort them for players or players for wages. It's also resulted in them missing out on players in recent years. However, City are/were in a much better place to be playing hard ball as their squad is/was a lot more complete than ours. We have several key positions that still haven't been addressed and every year there'll be 1/2 new areas that'll need investment. If we refuse to strengthen areas, the problems will only exacerbate and performances will drop.

Ideally we should be investing in the best young players even if it means overpaying. Then after we've strengthened sufficiently we can hard ball more to ensure that we're not taken advantage of financially by other clubs (the signed players will only approach their peak even if we don't strengthen any more in the years following). Madrid took that approach a few years ago and, at least in the champions league, we've seen the results recently.

Alderweireld is already 30 like Alexis and Matic and he won nothing in his career like Lukaku. He might be better than our defenders on the paper but it'll be a toxic contract after 1 season at best !

We should sign a young CB ( Diallo, Akanji, Skriniar, Zadagou...) with a great potential or a top CB who is less than 28 like Varane, Koulibaly, Umtiti, Marquinhos...or no one and wait for an opportunity in the summer !

What's the fecking point?
For starters, Jones needs to be kicked the feck out of this club, especially before Bailly who should get this and next season to make a final judgement on him.

Also, what is the money going to get us? Alderweireld for about £70m and what then? Either way, we know what Jose is going to go for - Older veterans who will come in for mega-bucks and start wilting after 1 full season and/or big, slow, 'strong' players. He's going to leave us with a squad of players that no major, forward thinking manager is ever going to be happy to work with.

Woodward wants to see some money come in before buying. Jones can only be let go on free. Wont fetch a dime. He also is like the 3rd or the 4th lowest salaried player in the team

Looking forward to the inevitable cycle of excitement followed by disappointment when our new signings turn out to make absolutely no difference to anything.

I keep reading that Woodward is kept for his financial expertize and that finishing a bit higher isn't worth spending money. So why spend money in bloody January when you may have already been out of sight league-wise. Both lose money and not finish higher. Then risk players not haing enough time to bed in (see Sanchez) and potentially out of favour/under pressure for the future managers that will come if (again, quite likely) fail to get TOP 4. If that's wise financially then show me dumb.

We did have a good platform last year, being the 2nd team in the league. Only needed 3 class players to have a strong, balanced set.

Giving Jose another £100 million is like giving your pet dog the most expensive drink - at the end of the day it's just going to get pissed up the wall and you'll never see it again.

Bailly has value, the only reason why I can see he is sold ahead of Jones. Jones needs to go period though.
Bailly is a good defender but low on confidence. He was our best defender in his debut season. With a good run of games he'll rediscover that form. He should get more time. Jones had time to prove himself and failed. His time his up now.

Don't get it. Mourinho won't be sacked in the next three months. Would you really rather save the money and let him continue with thr current squad than buy a proven CB or RW in the January window? What good would that do to the club?

I'm trying to give Jose some leeway as the last month or so has seen him graft out some great results for us. The City match aside, we've dug in and fought for everything and the Juventus victory was one of our best.

That aside, I really hope we don't give him any more money to spend in January.

I'm not advocating his sacking anymore, he's done enough in recent weeks to at least stay until it's mathematically impossible for us to finish in the top 4.

However, the likelihood is that we're not going to finish above Arsenal AND Spurs with or without the type of January reinforcements he'll be hellbent on buying.

He isn't the type of Manager who looks beyond his own lifespan at the club. I'm all for him buying some players that may chip in immediately but are ultimately all potential, preparing us for a post-Jose world. No chance of him doing this. His brief to the club will be 'Get me some post-peak thirty-something with one last half-season in him. Preferably someone who has played for me before.'

The Club should at least be looking to buy players for a brand of football they want the next Manager to play, even if they don't know who that is yet.

In short, if we bring in a couple of young studs like Lozano & Skrinier then I'm all for it.

If we end up signing an Alderweireld for Virgil money then we're making another Alexis sized mistake.
