Manchester United POTY 17/18 | PPotY + SMBPotY: De Gea, MPotY: McTominay | The two Tony's smile

Or it's gone to the best player of that age group .

He has only played six or seven matches at that level this season. The award was bit of a joke. Garner/O'Connor and Greenwood should've been the options.

Apparently Carrick's wife also had spinal surgery recently, that takes a toll on appearances.

Appearance wise she is a stunning looking woman, I can only imagine what all the posters on here date but they must be walking around with supermodels in their arms if they are making negative comments here.

Look at the kids in their little suits. John Terry would've shown up in full kit.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

This is never going to get old is it?

Never. In a few years time we will still be making the joke while having forgotten what it was about originally.

DDG with 4 United POTY awards now. Is this a record?

Id almost bet on it.

As for the MPOTY fair play to McTominay. I can see why Jose loves him, has all the attributes Jose looks for and best of all he can mould him in to whatever he wants him to be.

Managers player of the year going to matic or lukaku would have made sense, they worked tirelessly all season long. Giving it to mctominay is basically Jose riding his own dick.

So... Mourinho gave himself an award by using McTominay as a vessel of some sorts?

Sounds about right.

Just a case of Mourinho thinking too hard I reckon, giving it to Matic in his first season may seem a little like giving it to his teacher’s pet etc.

That said, better not to think about it too hard and just give it to your best performer.

Hate is strong in these 2.

No its called common sense. McTominay played a grand total of 641 minutes, didn't register a goal or an assist. Anyone who thinks he is anything more than a side note over the outcome of this season has taken leave of his mind.

I haven't read the whole thread but anybody mentioning the fact that despite what, like half a billion spent, De Gea is still our POTY for the 4th or 5th time in a row and is a Goalkeeper.

Mourinho getting stick for giving a product of the youth academy the MPOTY award because he worked hard and managed to break into the first team and played beyond his years. Heard it all now, guess SAF was a massive prick for giving MPOTY awards to Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Butt, the Nevillie's and in fact, anyone he had the audacity to sign in the first place.

Seriously can't believe Jose is getting mocked for rewarding Scott , this forum is bonkers at times . If anything I think giving it to a more established player sends a wrong sign while giving it to Mctominay doesn't harm anyone but makes all the youth at the club feel better

This. SAF was an insecure cnut who just had to find a way to credit himself when giving countless awards to the Class of 92 during his career was he?

We all know what Jose likes. Players with talent who will work hard and put themselves about. McTominay is just that, plus the fact that he worked his bollocks off to break through and honestly dominate chelsea and liverpool in front of his own fans, thus securing his future over the next few years with us and at worst ending up with a career like Jonny Evans, makes him a fairly obvious choice.

Obviously if I was the manager, I’d have given the award to one of our 3 best players this season, De Gea, Matic and Lukaku. But I’m not Jose, and every human being has different opinions.

Jesus Christ, Mourinho can do no right with some of you :D

Especially with the youth. He either hates them and only plays them when we have an injury crisis, or he gets an ego rise because of them.

Will do absolutely nothing but good. To the other youngsters in the club, it sends a clear message that if you work hard and have the right team-first mentality, Jose will not think twice about giving you a break.

Realised Lukaku wasn't there, but we are trying to get him fit for the cup final. Didn't see Bailly, was he there?

I don't hate Mourinho at all... I'm a big fan of the bloke.

However I do think the man has a giant ego, and likes to stroke it sometimes... and I don't think this is a massively crazy conclusion to come to.

Not so much an ego stroke as an attempt to give two fingers to people who criticise his record of youth developing that is so transparent it’s a little cringey. It almost feels like a direct response to Salah and De Bruyne tearing up the league. Mourinho’s a very difficult man to like, isn’t he?

Probably a more accurate way of looking at it yeah - either way, it's hard not thing there's an ulterior motive behind it then just simply rewarding McTominay for breaking through into the team (which isn't really a landmark achievement at this club at all lets be fair)... because it's Mourinho, and thats the sort of thing he would do.

Only just realised it's the first time there's ever been a Manager's Player of the Year Award. Might as well call it the "F*ck All You Haters I'm Great At Developing Youngsters" award.

When I heard McTominay had got a Manager's Player of the Year award off Mourinho, I thought it was a tad cringey, but the whole point of that sort of award is for the manager to highlight the contribution to the team of an individual that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. Not much point in him just handing out another trophy to your star player that everyone adorns with acclaim regardless. I'm fine with it if he wants to do it every year.

He could have gone with someone like Ashley Young or Smalling, if that was the case. Both been hugely important players for us this season but maybe not getting the recognition they deserve (would be particularly good timing to give props to big Mike, with the whole World Cup disappointment thing) but there's no rational reason to give it to someone who played such a small part in the season, other than to big himself up for giving McTominay his break.

I didn't see it as cynically as some, clearly. I think players from the academy making a breakthrough to the first team should be celebrated and recognised at the end of the season, especially with our record of consistently having academy products in the first team since the War. I'm glad that our manager feels the same way.

Don't have a clue what this has to do with De Bruyne and Salah. Are there seriously still people out there who don't understand why a manager in a short term role would focus on the short term? Lukaku could become the Belgian Pele next season and Mourinho would still have been right to do without him during his second spell at Chelsea. Why would he care how good these players would have been in 2017 onwards? He was never going to be at Chelsea then.

I think Mourinho knows at United that he can expect to be here for the long term if he continues the early success and then meets the minimum standards he sets for himself.

Just for info, I've met Carricks wife and she is stunning.

I was in a box next to Carricks a few years back when we played Arsenal, top notch she is.

They're relevant because they both - whether you agree with this or not - have been used as sticks to beat Mourinho with for his alleged inability to nurture them and develop them as footballers when he was their manager. He's been asked about it a bunch of times and very recently made some sarky (and not entirely true) comments about how he should get credit for bringing Salah to Chelsea but it wasn't his decision to get rid of him.

So you see why he's feeling a bit defensive about the whole developing young players thing. He's been like that since he's taken the job, when he pulled out that long list of youngsters he's developed at previous clubs. I do feel a little bit of sympathy on this, mind you, because turning around the absolute shit show he inherited and keeping up Fergie's amazing record of youth development is a hell of a big ask. I just think this is a bit of a silly way to try and prove he's meeting this goal.

Eric Bailly was ill and that was why he missed the dinner last night. Maybe the virus he had a couple of weeks back has been worse than originally thought?

In fairness, every single side that I’ve played for at semi pro level has had a PPOTY award & a MPOTY award. Without fail the PPOTY went to the best player whilst the manager’s always went to some bloke who wasn’t a starter, tried his hardest, was always there, never moaned etc etc..

It’s always been more of a ”try hard award” in my experience. No-one else had experience of this?

De Gea winning the player of the year award previously was used as evidence of our season being very poor.

Also McTominay winning anything is just bizarre.

Which sounds really hard to do.
Agree on rest, Lukaku for me.

It's bizarre. People should be hope he's giving such confidence to the kid. Scott must be on sky high since yesterday. People don't know what they want anymore.

Isn't that the thing though? It's an award that's suited for pub teams/semi-pro... not really an elite level club (in my opinion at least)

Hardly!
