Manchester United - January Ins and Outs

Get a grip.

No! If a world class player like Mkhitaryan can't get into the first team, our team will be doomed to rot in mid-table mediocrity like Ac milan.

I'm obviously wumming.

I agree, it's just non-urgent in comparison with other areas of the team. We need to select any additions carefully in January, if we buy anyone at all, and a RB just feels further down the list of priorities at this stage.

I'd like to see some of our hugely talented young CBs get a game in the cups which could offset the need to bring in a centre back and I remain hopeful, and in the minority, that Morgan will come good.

All transfers are independent of each other though, sometimes an opening to strengthen a position is there and you take it even if it's not your first priority, as the first priority has less viable options or are at clubs that are difficult to negotiate with in a short window.

I definitely don't think we can add the CB we need in January and I agree we should try to get the kids games in the cups, but it's not so much about the amount of bodies we have at CB it's the type of CB I think we need to compliment Bailly or Smalling.

A few posts suggesting we should or will likely go for a right winger, but I guess they could be thinking that Mkhitaryan should play centrally. My bad. I don't think he should though.

I think we need to add another wide option in general, not messicarily strictly a RW, but an option that is more of a winger and less of an inside forward, all 3 of our main wide options play very narrow.

Ouch.

"No I will never sell him, it's just up to him whether he rots on the bench or not"

When you first read the headline the heart sinks, but when you read what Jose says it's almost indentical to what Pep said regarding Bastian when he was manouvering him out of Bayern, I mean this is a guy that got rid of Raul who was a bigger legend at Real than Rooney is here.

This is epic, just playing through some campaign stuff first to get used to it.

Bloody hell....I'd totally forgotten he was still with us! What on earth is he doing, playing in the reserves all the time?
Training with his girlfriend at home and on his own at work pretty much.

I think the RB options have suddenly become brighter than a year ago, through this thread I have seen 5 good options brought up.

The CB situation is a tricky one without a doubt, Laporte is the best young option on the market and my general opinion is that if a player is good enough then they'll make it through, so part of me thinks we shouldn't worry about Axel and RoShaun just now, but it's also those young CB's that make me want an experienced CB like Bonucci. I agree with you on Fosu-Mensah, I see him developing into a very good DM.

I haven't watched a lot of Sassuolo but I'll keep an eye out next time they are on, I did like the bit I saw of Maksimovic but I didn't realize he'd moved to Napoli, that will make him very difficult to get. How has de Vrij developed at Lazio?

Agree about the sentiment, if they are good enough, they'll make it. And I'm also much more relaxed on the RB situation than before, partly because of the options and Valencia stepping up.

De Vrij's development was hampered by an injury last season. I don't think he played that much or at all, so that's why he's one for the future and I was specifically thinking of different CBs. Hoedt could turn out to be the better player.

Ah yes.....I see the training is going well......

Reuben Neves, if he is still good at football.

A top center back.

You trolling or is he a player I've never heard of? If you mean Ruben Neves, when he comes off the bench he replaces Danilo Pereira and plays defensive mid at Porto.

Valencia has done really well I agree, my concern is that we haven't got any real RB comptetition of cover, we'll be in trouble if he gets injured.

This CB situation has been catapulted into importance after today, Bailly now out injured and it was only going to be a matter of time before the partnership between him and Smalling was exposed, they are too similar.

Yep. Smalling was absolutely dreadful today. Mourinho hopefully has another shrewd signing like Bailly up his sleeve.

I just hope that Mourinho will be ruthless come January. We still got plenty of deadwood and the sooner we chop and replace them with Mourinho kind of players the better.

We need a goalscorer and a midfielder. If Bailly is out, then possibly a CB as well. I really hope Mkhitaryan can get a run in this side (playing to this true potential) as soon as possible, because that may well be the difference between us getting top four as things stand. We just lack creativity up top.

It would be great if he had a trick up his sleeve like Bailly, but one way or the other we are going to need a CB in January as we can't rely on Rojo or Jones.

Yes. Nothing more to add really. Just not sure, whether we can get someone like Vidic or an absolute top signing for the position in January.

Why the clamor for Griezmann? He'd be perfect in a high press team as the second striker, but we can't possibly get the best out of him and Pogba in an eleven, unless the former is used as a False 9 (which is a position Mourinho has never employed).
Deschamps, however, switched to a 4-2-3-1 system midway through the tournament to accomodate Antoine Griezmann in his favoured central position, forcing Pogba into a deeper role alongside Blaise Matuidi. That compromised his style considerably: neither he nor Matuidi is a natural defensive midfielder, with both defined more by their attacking power than their positional discipline. In that role Pogba looked highly uncomfortable, his limitations in possession exposed. He was unable to play penetrative passes from deep positions; with Juventus he had never had this responsibility.

This was a really unbalanced setup:
Most #10s and second strikers can't co-exist with Pogba unless he fully transitions into a central midfielder, as opposed to his peak left sided floater role.

Sorry for the spelling mistake, officer.

Yes, I meant Neves who plays for Porto. He looked good in the few times I saw him at Porto. He also captained the team last season. But this season his starting appearances seem to have dried up and Danilo is preferred in his position. I am not sure what happened.

Yes I'm sorry, I came across condescending, when I was actually confused whether there was a player I hadn't heard of, as you said he was a top centre back. And yes, I think he's definitely someone we should be looking at to replace Carrick long term, so it'd be interesting to see how he performs (if he ever plays that is) this season.

Its always tough to buy players in January. Prices are ridiculously high and players take time to settle down. In my opinion we should add players who might know OT and the EPL well if possible.

CB: Considering Bailly will be out either way (injury or Coppa Africa) Id go for Michael Keane. He's a good defender, he's 6.3ft tall and he knows United inside out. If he can build on his progress at Burnley then well and good. If not that we would need a replacement for Jones either way.

Midfield: Danny Drinkwater. He's a mean box to box midfielder who also knows United inside out. With him and Pogba in CM doing all the leg work we would be able to play a more experienced and less mobile CM. Someone like Blind, Bastian or Carrick

RW: we need a quick winger who can cross the ball
