Manchester City under Pep Guardiola | Pep on City v Liverpool ref: "He likes to be special"

There's not another manager who has been blessed with managing teams as strong as Bayern and Barcelona. I'd expect any half decent manager to reach the semis with those teams. It's no coincidence that he fails to make it as soon as he isn't managing either.
Many managers failed to reach semis with teams as strong as those.

No they shouldn't. Monaco being idiots in the 1st leg papered over the cracks. They were the much better side over both legs.
And after all that it took Aguero to miss two easy chances and conceding from a set piece when Monaco had gone to be eliminated

Tonight is on Pep and KDB, KDB was atrocious for 90 minutes and should have been pulled first half/half time. We could have got through but.. why not for one game put Yaya and Fern in midfield and bench one of Silva, KDB for one game. Pundits blaming Aguero for the first goal but really it should be on the two cm's of Silva, KdB whose position Kun was covering.

That said had we taken our chances we go through, we didn't and Monaco deserve to be where they are. We need to make the top 4 now and win the FA Cup as Pep said no trophy is a failure.

Mancini's City were a much better all-round outfit than this bunch IMO. I know Monaco are a very good team these days but a) you shouldn't concede 3 at home and b) City seem to have got worse defensively as the season's gone on

For someone who was for most of his managerial career lauded for his innovative, clever, advanced tactics, he's actually incredibly tactically naive. We've seen it a few times this season, like at Leicester, but tonight was baffling.

And all it took was the Monaco goalkeeper making a howler for City to come back in the first game.

Yep. First time he doesn't have a world class squad and he gets knocked out in last 16. This team only lost 1-0 to Real Madrid last season in the semi final. How can the defence be getting worse after spending £75M in the summer
He alredy showed he can't use his style of play at Bayern, but he still managed to do something, as he had a squad big and talented enough.

I know all that but it was City who had the final say in this 6-6 shitshow, thats all Im saying. They should have had the final say and pissed it away.
Conceding from a set piece v a side who don't score set pieces is unforgivable, it all adds up.

The tactical genius that is Fraudiola (thanks whoever posted that, no idea how I never thought of it despite forever calling him a fraud) got the all important goal in the last quarter of the game and decided that this was the time to instruct his team to push forward even harder. Then instructs his team to play an unbelievably high line to defend a set piece. He still must think he has Messi to save him from his mediocrity.

They play Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea next and us sometime after too. They'd be lucky to get 3 points out of those 4 games. It will be a massive struggle to make top 4.

This is why Fergie is the GOAT.
Having to adapt according to the match and your resources is the truest test of ability of a Manager.
Now Pep is really having to reach for that Next manager level as he simply doesn't have the level of players that made his sides work well; Much like a young player playing in an all conquering side moving to play in a team on the up with a new league and new way of playing with extra responsibility.

I think Pep will continue with his Van Gaal on Steroids ball-possession tactics, but the problem with Pep's teams has always been his lack of different tactics in terms of team play; Almost entirely relies on one way of playing. Like sort of Wenger's genius disciple.

Saying all that, they should be through.
I genuinley think Sergio can only score consistently from diverting in crosses these days.
Is it the yips?
Seems to have lost a couple yards of pace and acceleration which is quite vital at the top level. Likewise agility, he struggles to twist and turn past opponents with the same frequency of years gone by,will still score goals but is nowhere near as dynamic as before. Much like Sturridge, although in his case it seems to be 3/4 yards. Only hope is that Klopp insinuated there's a possibility it might eventually return even in a couple years. Although I'm not sure how, there doesn't really seem to be a precedent for it,apart from arguably falcao this season.

It's poor considering the sides he had and some of the sides he played on that list aren't really great.

He made 8 semifinals in a row, winning 2 CL trophies. So obviously he was doing something right, despite not winning too many away games.

It's just an arbitrary stat for the Pep bashers.

KDB committed four or five fouls in the second half after he was yellow carded. Shame we didn't have that referee on Monday night.

For all the accolades and trophies it seems all these top managers really need are a couple of world class forwards on top form. Messi, Iniesta, Robben, Lewa, Drogba, Hazard, Henry, Pores, Bergkamp, etc.

Heck even Rodgers almost fell into that category with Suarez and Sturridge.

Really 3 of those are penalties.

First one outside the box, second is a dive and neither of the last 2 are deliberate handball, they aren't even looking at the ball.

Was a good laugh to watch the whining again though!

okay I'm not going to waste my energy arguing with someone as deluded as yourself. Have a good evening.

Time we got a song for him imo, help me finish it guys.

♪Poop, Poop, wherever you may be,
You are shit without Messi,

Next two lines are for you lot.

Its not just that since he gets his fair share of chances, he just doesn't seem to be able to place his shots anymore.
He can divert crosses across the keeper as good as anybody but give him a chance under pressure and he's nowhere.
It's a strange phenomenon since those instincts should be the last to go

He is so stubborn to change his tactics based on the opposition. Does he not realize that he doesn't have world class players in every position now? City's defensive organisation was amateurish. It is the exact kind of criticism Wenger faces every year.

Whilst I tend to agree they aren't quite as nailed on as some, the first was holding, and the laws say if holding continues into the box its a penalty. The second one I think is 50/50, I don't think the slight shirt pull is enough, but coupled with the trip I'd give it. The third the pundits are talking crap, it doesn't matter at all where the ball was going, intent is the key and I think its unnatural to leave your arm in that 'frozen' position so I think its a penalty. The last one is the most obvious of all, you simply cannot throw your arms above yourself, turn your head away and say "not looking".

Of course not! Barcelona and Bayern are the first ever teams who had great players in the history of the game. Don't you understand! Seriously the envy and bitterness surrounding Pep from some quarters is nothing short of baffling.
