Manager's Press conference - 17th August 2015 (Man United vs Club Brugge)

I feel like Mata is productive despite being on the flank, he's class. The question is would he be more effective in his natural position? I think we all agree that he's not a winger, and his lack of pace and physicality is a bigger weakness as a false winger cutting in.

What's his "natural position"

Pedro coming in will help that I think and with Depay bound to settle eventually too we will be so strong with the front three/four.

Rooney/Hernandez/Wilson/Adnan as a lone striker perhaps? Right now i would prefer Adnan up there with Depay - Mata - Pedro behind.

or we can convert to a 4-3-3 and have Pedro - Rooney - Depay supported by the middle three of Carrick/schniederlin/schwienstieger/herrera/Fellaini
pick 3 from that 5.

So there would be plenty of options around, and i haven't even mention Pereria or Young yet. Also with jones coming back at some point, Blind could be an option to enter midfield if need be too.

so many options.

I agree. With Pedro coming in (I haven't kept up with that actually so I'm not sure how likely it is to happen) we will have more than enough options for multiple strong setups, so I won't buy any excuses from LVG and staff for playing shit football. Also, I can't help but think that they sold the player who would have solved the same conundrum Pedro is meant to fix, but last thing I want is to turn this into a Nani bashing thread so I'll leave that.

What's his "natural position"
A pure modern-day number 10 is the best way I can put his natural position :D

Bruuuuuuhgggh LOL.

Say what you want about Van Gaal's tactical philosophy on the pitch etc. etc. But you can't really deny that he has excellent man management skills off the pitch. The way he chimed in about Adnan there was brilliant, basically shaming the journalist by saying who are these people you talk about? I don't know who and giving Adnan a little reminder that he has his back and further reminding the rest of the squad that he has all of their backs as well.

Sometimes I wish he wouldn't make us play such insipid football but as a character and a manager I completely understand the respect he commands. Even just watching him talk about the club gives me doubts about my insecurities about his tenure.

like he keeps saying, it's a process. It took him a season to get the defense and midfield in order and I think we can be a bit more patient and let the attack develop as well. It did come right sporadically last season as well, right? In big games against tough opposition as well, where an actually defensive manager would have parked the bus.

That's how Brugge is pronounced in Dutch, I assume it's the same for people from Belgium.
Yep. Weird that UK people find it funny when they have actually bastardized the pronounciation this time around, not LvG.

I want to believe that. When I hear him speak, I always get a bit of a boost of confidence where United is concerned. But then you get onto the playing field and watch us play, it is the same possession football mess that we've seen since the start of last season. But we are winning now so I am happy.

This video kills me every time though. LOL

That's the thing about possession football though. When it clicks, its beautiful. But when everyone isn't on the same page, it can be a borefest. A counterattacking setup can perhaps carry a player or 2, who are off form or have poor touch. But its not the same with possession football. Everyone has to contribute.

Possession football is never ever beautiful and will never be beautiful. That is my opinion anyway, I have no doubt it is about 99.99% of the reason for my grievances. :)

I was of the same opinion and only converted recently (when Barca schooled us in two finals) actually!

If you (can) see it as a proper transformation, it's obvious that he started at the back (also it's his philosophy to build from the back). So our back 4 is pretty solid, our midfield is work in progess but rather advanced and now we will work on our play in the final 3rd.

I have only begin to understand and appreciate this 'transformation' after seeing our defensive solidity recently. Now I really can visualize what he's trying to do.

Fixing the attack will be hardest I feel though. So lets see how successful he is in completing the project.

I agree with you it's just hard to see him making baffling decisions and watch us play rather dull football at times. But I'm optimistic

Pay attention you lot and get the pronunciation right. BrugHHCcccCHhig@@..ge!!!

Says I based on watching him play. Perhaps natural is not the best word but what I meant was clear, there's no reason to get fussy about my word choice
Says you

I ask this because it seems he's been playing fine and been. Effective from his starting position out wide. Just like many playmakers of his ilk in the league. He's been playing that position for years.

I enjoyed that presser, particularly how prickly LvG was! You could literally see how pissed off he got when the journalist suggested playing Mata inside would create more chances for Rooney. He's also not at all impressed about the fact that last season they were all clamouring for Rooney to play up front, and now he is, they're almost writing him off there.

I'm one of those who would have liked to see Januzaj play more last season but understand LvGs reason about his lack of consistency as he's only 20 years old. It's a valid point. Had to chuckle a bit at him taking umbrage to the suggestion that Januzaj should have played more - it's the way he responded to the suggestion that Adnan should have had more than 8 starts "why? And they other players have no right? Only Adnan has a right?" He put Simon Stone in his place a bit there (why does he ask such convoluted questions btw?!)

Seems like I'm part of a dwindling number on here who is glad we have LvG.

You're allowed to have an opinion let alone on a forum my friend . The point still stands. Our attacking play has left a lot to be desired in spite of Mata's brilliance. Other similar playmakers on the wing tend to have the pace that Mata lacks

  • i agree you are allowed to gave an opinion. im also allowed to challenge it and we discuss it right?
  • yes he lacks pace but he makes up for it with his brain and skill on the ball. He can be very handy on the right. was shite tonight but thats allowed i guess
  • I fully expect van gaal to bring in a right winger as not everytime mata will be the correct choice tactically
  • my original issue with what you said was the natural position anyway. we seem to slightly have gone off tangent
  • enjoy the win ffs why are you quoting me on the minor matter after that great result

Alright I think we cleared that one . Great result tonight indeed, I got back home at half time and couldn't resist not watching from there. I'm now gonna watch the full replay a very relaxed man

Should be an interesting one. I wonder what direction the main line of questioning will take.

might hear something about other bids/signings?
I don't think we will. I mean he will troll us again with something like 'we'll buy only if there are better players then what we got'. :)
If he says something like 'we'll close to signing one player' I might get excited but I doubt that will happen.
