Manager's Press conference - 17th August 2015 (Man United vs Club Brugge)

This is the problem. We shouldn't have to accommodate Rooney no matter how bad he is. I don't think he is ever going to find his 'world class' form again unfortunately, he is long past that point.

I'm not sure LVG will, he's shown he's prepared to drop people see RVP. But he has also shown he gives people time to find form (again see RVP). I expect Rooney to be given a few more games to find form and if he doesnt Hernandez will get more and more minutes, and then will be given a start. At that point LVG I think will play the player in form.

I fully expect Rooney to up his games and respond to the criticism vs Newcastle hopefully and if not then in the next couple of games. Maybe the pressure and the talk that he's not up to standard whilst we are still getting wins could be a good thing!

I just watched that and to think that some here have sympathy for those asking a questions...

Asking about De Gea when he spend 3/4 of his press-conference 2 weeks ago explaining the situation and 1/2 of the press-conference last week was really stupid thing to do. And it looks like the next journalist wanted to ask the same question....

He's definitely getting pricklier with the press with every passing week.

I expect one of the journos to get a very public shouting soon. Hopefully it's Jackson or Stone.

If you watch the video the first questions is asked by Jamie Jackson who's sitting on the left side, when LVG is having his De Gea rant even though the questions was asked from someone sitting on the opposite side LVG looks directly at Jamie Jackson whilst he saying his words. Must have looked directly in Jacksons eyes

That was a Fergie-esque press conference imo.

Reminds me of this:

Probably Jackson...

He'll ask a stupid question, deliberately looking for a narky response, all for a bit of publicity for his new book....

Christ, I'm very cynical

I just watched it and correct me if I'm wrong, I took the ¨No one at Manchester Utd is guaranteed a spot¨ a clear message towards the team and it directly contradicts the message of ¨my captain always plays¨.

FFs. Why am I not in the conferences :P

Watching that press conference I'm not surprised that he's annoyed. He stated that he was annoyed with how they took the words he said about De Gea out of context, which I can definitely understand.

I've actually thought he's been too open and honest in his press conferences so I won't be surprised if we see more of this prickly side.

Because he's gladly spoken about them before and when he's explaining the thought process behind some of his decisions is when I find him the most interesting.

Of course he doesn't have to, it would be nice. No one is even beating him with a stick jeez the man isn't a baby.
It's almost like he's a human being with moods!

It was painfully obvious to see how much better we were with BFS and Herrera on the field. 433 over anything at this point. But, it's a process, and will probably play 4231, with zombie passing and Rooney's magic first touch.

Anyway, we'll probably win 1-0 or 2-0.

And that's a bad result? I'd take 2-0 and a shite performance right now!

That question about Mata was basically telling LVG how to do his job quite right to tell them to feck off Fergie would have done the same. His point about the Rooney questions is dead right as well they wanted him there.

Glad to see LVG getting pissed off at those useless journalists. They all want think they're football managers:rolleyes:

It was a reasonable question. Mata can play at #10 but the manager doesn't seem to fancy him there. No great issue with people asking why that is.

Wow! LVG pounced on the journalist for telling Januzaj that he did not get enough chances.

Louie love for Adnan. That presser alone makes me believe that LVG will give Januzaj his chances!

My theory is that Mata is probably easier to mark for a DM if he starts at that position. Whereas someone with a bit of pace and trickery would relish that 1 on 1 challenge to run at the defense. Januzaz is excellent if he can learn to retain and recycle possession durably well for the rest of the game.

Love how he pronounced Brukhar ... whilst spitting on the journalists with each attempt at pronouncing it, and Januzaj's jacket/top whatever it was looked pretty nice, is that official CL gear or something?

On a closer look, not sure I like it now.

Januzaj speaks like Ibrahimovic.

That's how Brugge is pronounced in Dutch, I assume it's the same for people from Belgium.

Not at all. It's a great one.

But we do have a great team and formation to play good football and win. Instead we'll play methodicaly and win, not that it's bad by any means, just that we are better than this.

The guy basically said to him the supply to Rooney would improve if you move Mata inside, he was telling him what to do as opposed to asking a reasonable question in a reasonable way, I don't blame Louis' response, he made a good point too that when he (the journalist) is manager of United he can discuss that with his staff, the mention of his staff and also the fact Louis has said on numerous occasions all decisions are discussed in depth with his staff before he makes the final decision suggests to me they have internally at least thought about moving Mata to the 10 position.

There is obviously a reason why they haven't. As of now Mata has done well on the right flank, without him in that position our options are limited, his best form for us came from that position last season and arguably he has been most effective from there in his career, I can see why they don't want to move Mata inside yet, it seems it is Januzaj's chance to show whether he can perform as a second striker but if that fails then the staff will decide to try something else.

In the previous match Mata drifting inside all the way to the left flank created the goal, he also came inside slightly to set Memphis up, he's producing the goods, it's harder to pick him up when technically the LB should be marking him, if he starts central then he might be easier to mark out of the game.

With Pedro things will get interesting, I'm hoping the manager and staff have discussed Mata as a 10, if so either the second striker finds form whoever it is or Mata will get his chance.

I kind of agree, the Mata to 10 question was needed but the journo asked it the wrong way. The reaction from van Gaal is understandable but as a fan I at least got something on a puzzling issue. That was a rare good presser, I watch many of them and journos are always wanting in the lack of proper footballing questions. No wonder they do it wrongly when they actually do their job . Worst thing is I think they will take it from LVG's reaction that they shouldn't ask footballing question, instead of humbling themselves and learning how to do their job.

These are all the reasons I've not had any qualms about Mata playing where he currently is. He is good at drifting in and out of the central positions. I'm not sure he'd be as effective being marked out by a DM if he starts in the 10 position.

I feel like Mata is productive despite being on the flank, he's class. The question is would he be more effective in his natural position? I think we all agree that he's not a winger, and his lack of pace and physicality is a bigger weakness as a false winger cutting in.

Pedro coming in will help that I think and with Depay bound to settle eventually too we will be so strong with the front three/four.

Rooney/Hernandez/Wilson/Adnan as a lone striker perhaps? Right now i would prefer Adnan up there with Depay - Mata - Pedro behind.

or we can convert to a 4-3-3 and have Pedro - Rooney - Depay supported by the middle three of Carrick/schniederlin/schwienstieger/herrera/Fellaini
pick 3 from that 5.

So there would be plenty of options around, and i haven't even mention Pereria or Young yet. Also with jones coming back at some point, Blind could be an option to enter midfield if need be too.

so many options.
