Manager's Press conference - 17th August 2015 (Man United vs Club Brugge)

Can't always trust these journalists to report just the facts, they always protect each other. His full take on questions about Rooney is hardly unreasonable:
All the media has written for one year that I have to put him in the striker’s position so it’s amazing that after two games you’re doubting your own opinions. I cannot understand that.

“I always have confidence in my players.”

He uses this line about Rooney all the time, it feels like he is saying "Careful what you wish for"

Another stick to beat him with I see. Why should he divulge tactical information? He's well within his rights not to. Fergie didn't, so why complain now?
Because he's gladly spoken about them before and when he's explaining the thought process behind some of his decisions is when I find him the most interesting.

Of course he doesn't have to, it would be nice. No one is even beating him with a stick jeez the man isn't a baby.

it's weird, there are times where he will gladly talk tactics. For example there was a press conference where he explained the variations between 4-3-3 and how he prefers the pivot to be infront of two holding midfielders and acting as a second striker, he then went on to say that he doesn't mind playing with the pivot and two advanced CM's like last year because it can give him more control.

Then other times he just gives snappy cold responses like the we have just seen. I would love for LVG to explain why he does some of his decisions just from a learning perspective.

His hackles seem to rise when individual players get mentioned. He's happy to talk about his "philosophy" in fairly abstract terms but gets irritable if he perceives the question as being a means to criticise individual performances, which he never wants to get into.
.

It is the fact that the person asking the question has already decided there is an issue that needs resolving, implying LVG has not identified it. It would have been better to have rephrased the question about areas of improvement, since LVG has already said he expects us to get better. He gets anti when people act the trainer/coach/manager.
Yeaa the tone was all wrong to be fair, he assumed there was already problem, really funny when last year the press continually pushed the narrative that rooney had to be the main striker if we wanted goals.

No, he speaks about his team in a abstract terms but never how individuals affect it or how they can benefit from it.

A poster said he was a dick for not answering FFS. Some of you need a fecking rocket up your arse. Rooney needs to improve. He's 29 and has played the lone striker role before, now it's like he's 12 and never played a game of football in his life.

I'm sure LVG finds it very frustrating when the media bang on about where he should play his own players, then he does what they've suggested and that's wrong as well.

But of course LVG isn't playing Rooney up front as a I told you so to the media. He thinks he's good enough to play that role for the club.

i'm in agreement with this so I don't see why i need a rocket up my arse ?

I was talking about LVG in press conferences generally when talking about the team or tactics.

I can't remember but are the CL conferences partially embargoed like the PL ones?

So what now, Rooney up front is the problem? I mean was that the question?
It is the problem when he's in such a poor form but nevertheless he should play there.

My point was he wouldn't talk about how tactics affect the individual, he never has done that. So why expect him to now?

Then you get @Rado_N calling him a dick for something he's never done.

Seemed to dodge saying anything about Rooney and got annoyed at the reporter suggesting putting Mata in the #10 position (though that was to be expected, as Van Gaal doesn't like when reporters tell him about tactics and things like that).

I'm very supportive of his attitude there, in fact I would support any manager that holds this attitude. It sets a dangerous precedence if a manager starts acknowledging journalists' suggestions for tactical changes. It's a whole different affair if he goes back to the tactics board and work out changes with his staff but he should at no point entertain these journalists in a press conference. Or else, what next? Is he going to start listening to new analysis from them after every bad result or poor performance?

In any case, he already explained last season he dropped Mata as a 10 because he didn't do as good a job he expected of him there.

As you pointed out yourself, he's open to explaining why he sets the team up his way. His cold responses come when the questions are geared to hinting how he should do things differently.

umm but he has.

He happily explained herrera's absence from the team last season, saying that he chases the ball too much and needs to wait and find the pass and until he does that rooney provides the balance needed in midfield.

Yes, he'll explain how individuals can fit into the team. He will not however, discuss how the team tactics affect players who are already in the team. It's about the team ethic, not the individual. That is what he takes exception to.

I personally don't see why they should affect Rooney. For me, Rooney isn't playing well enough. Fergie used to say that when he was out of form, he used to revert to type. That is what he's doing now.

I may be wrong but didnt Moyes once change something in his lineup based on articles and journalists' suggestions?
Not sure but he did leave an injured RVP on because of what people might say

"I think if I’d brought him off some people would say ‘What are you doing? You are 1-0 down and you’re taking off your top goalscorer. I think that answers why I left him on"

He then got injured worse and was out for longer.

Yeah, yeah that's the thing. Thanks. That was a bit. Embarrassing. (favorite word in that time :) )

lol it was funny how LvG put that journalist in his place over Mata question. He is not obliged to answer the media and fans why a certain individual is played in certain position and not elsewhere. As the coach & manager and as someone known to have eye for detail, he must have already covered that in his strategy. As he said, those who don't carry responsibility of a decision can go around making random comments on how it should be. That is not the case with the coach.

Also what was that shit about labelling Januzaj first best player last season and then correcting it to season before that? Neither last season nor season before he was our best player. It is awful how media can only question with potential controversy in mind than asking proper questions.

Come on,we can all smell it in the air,be brave enough, make a thread cowards.

Van Gaal actually has a point there. A fairly strong one as well, media and fans alike are quick to U-turn as always but Rooney's shocking showings so far don't help either.

Van Gaal sold rvp, so i doubt he'd keep rooney as no.1 without thinking he's good enough.

Well that just says the media has bad judgement in the past year as well. Plenty of us here did not make a U-turn and have been saying it for years.

I think he comes across as a dick sometimes with the way he answers questions, so I said so.

I really don't understand why that seems to have hurt you so much.

i answer because i feel no pain or hurt from pressers. those parasites , sorry jurnos , twist words to suit their needs. fergie was the same (and with close to 59,000 posts you know that unless you did all of them post saf). i'd tell them nothing unless i wanted to. so when dealing with dicks it helps to be one.

to be honest the British media pestered him all season long for playing Rooney in midfield and other places and now he has a right to be annoyed when he is playing him in his favorite position and he still fails to produce.

What's he supposed to do? Rooney's not a winger, he's a decent midfielder if all breaks well so forward is probably the only position where he can hide for now until he finds his form.

Agreed. Feck them.

He definitely comes across as a dick but I love it. Fergie was just as caustic at times in his own way.

Saw the video on YouTube.. Not sure I can post it here..

Search for the manager and filter results for today.. You should see a near 14 minute video.. Hope that helps..
Ofcourse you can post it here. It is posted in every press-conference thread and i don't think it is against the forum rules.

Here it is:

This is the problem. We shouldn't have to accommodate Rooney no matter how bad he is. I don't think he is ever going to find his 'world class' form again unfortunately, he is long past that point.

The journalist's reasoning why Adnan should be an automatic starter is because he was the best player under Moyes...
