Director of football seem to be a somewhat risky approach. They seem to be mildly inconsistent. Marcel Brands was talked about as genius before his move to Everton, since he's been there, their recruitment has been a joke. Same with Walsh before him, lauded at Leicester for some of his signings then completely failed at Everton. Or were the signings good/well researched etc but the manager was out of his depth, who takes the fall? If Edwards was at Everton instead of Liverpool, would the managers have been able to get a tune out of the likes of Chamberlain, Salah, Robertson etc or is Klopp the genius behind it.
There is names all across Europe who have done good things with clubs but then failed at others. It needs to be a multi-disciplinary approach with manager, scouting team, director of football and head of negotiations. I think it's difficult to get straight into a club as director of football and be a success instantly. There is a risk with every signing, especially nowadays more so with the increased fee's and pressure.
We are experts on here apparently, but the majority on here thought Schneiderlin and Depay would be excellent signings and their profile was in line with what we now clamour for. Done well at a lesser but still competitive club, were at a good age and expected to reach their next level at United and have their prime here.
Who's fault was their signings for being a flop? Was it the recruitment team for identifying poor players who could never fit into United, or was it the manager's for not getting the best out of them on the pitch. If they had went Liverpool at the time, would they have fitted in well and been a resounding success?
