Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

Whenever we screw up in the transfer market or about to screw up, Woodward uses the DoF card.
And the crazy thing is that some fans believe it.
How many times does someone have to be lied to before they realise they are being lied to.

It is possible that DoF story is being wheeled out, in anticipation of a major spanking which we may receive tonight.
It's not a briefing.

Ole would be the obvious candidate but if that happens I think it would go to show how far we've actually fallen.

As in 'obviously a bizarre decision'?

What the hell? He's our manager. I really don't get where you're coming from with this.

If our club have done their homework right then Poch will be coming in in the summer leaving Ole unemployed. Have a look at your own words.

"Ed will be desperate for a fall guy by now. Just needs to find someone gullible enough to take the job, yet plausible enough to get a few of the fans off his back."

Could you think of anyone better suited than Ole?

Sacking Ole and appointing him as a DOF will look like parting with your partner and then keeping him in a friendzone while having a new partner right next to him. It's just stupid and humiliating.

We need someone who is experienced at this game. Campos would be ideal.

Even with a DOF, would Woodward relinquish his powers on football matters, or simply just overrule the DOF at every turn? I have the impression that Woodward has a huge ego and that the former would apply.

There's no truth in this. Every few months some random name gets thrown out there by the tabloids.

I don't think we'll be signing a Mourinho best buddy which seems like a short-term appointment. Campos is obviously brilliant, but I think the club will feel they can find a DOF who is perhaps British and will perhaps stay long term. Similar to Liverpools set up.

Ahh the annual January "DOF is on his way" reports right on time. I wonder who we'll be close to appointing next january

How many years have they been trotting this out around this time? 3 or 4 years? Mad that anyone still falls for it, and even madder that its still being peddled by the media.

Seems like Duncan Wright has made this story up about Campos, which isn't a surprise considering he worked for the Daily Star in the past.

So the DoF rumours surface again. This must be in advance of Woodward failing to complete an incoming transfer this month.

Hopefully it's a case of Woodward setting things up for poch in the summer

NOW Ed! We need one now more than ever. Ole is drowning, flailing away in choppy waters and no life belt being thrown. You promised a life belt Ed! Why is there none to drag Ole out?

It's fairly obvious SAF has been the "DoF"/driving force behind the original Ole appointment and now the Ole/Phelan rebuild. Not a chance in a million years has Ed come up with this load of nonsense and then also decided that despite the results, we're not firing this manager of all managers. It has Fergie's hands all over it. Can easily see SAF convincing the rest of the board to at least let him go until Christmas 2020.

So yeah, you're right, give that power to someone else asap, neither Ed nor SAF deserve it.

Yeh it's as plain as day that this is the case! (It really isn't)

This one signing could buy Ed a couple of years but he no longer calls the shots. I'm guessing we shall see some more on this soon.

Wow. You’ve obviously been broken by this recent hardship. One of the worst posts I’ve ever read on here, and that’s saying a lot!

It doesn't say much about the board if they're having rings run around them by a 78 year old who had a brain haemorrhage a couple of years ago. Given the feck ups Woodward has made of pretty much every decision in the last 7 years it seems completely conceivable that it was his idea and given the ego he seems to have it also makes complete sense that he would stubbornly stick with it despite the evidence, in part because the fans would consider him the villain and not Ole (and rightly so).

"His idea", don't make me laugh, you think Ed sat in Tampa with the Glazers discussing firing Mourinho and what, just came up with the idea that a bloke from '99 managing in Molde could be the answer? No chance, has Fergie all over it just as the Moyes appointed did.
It's not about them having rings run around them, it's about their choices ultimately failing (LVG, Mou) and going back to the board for ideas, both SAF and Gill are board members so of course their input in football matters is extremely important.

Director of football seem to be a somewhat risky approach. They seem to be mildly inconsistent. Marcel Brands was talked about as genius before his move to Everton, since he's been there, their recruitment has been a joke. Same with Walsh before him, lauded at Leicester for some of his signings then completely failed at Everton. Or were the signings good/well researched etc but the manager was out of his depth, who takes the fall? If Edwards was at Everton instead of Liverpool, would the managers have been able to get a tune out of the likes of Chamberlain, Salah, Robertson etc or is Klopp the genius behind it.

There is names all across Europe who have done good things with clubs but then failed at others. It needs to be a multi-disciplinary approach with manager, scouting team, director of football and head of negotiations. I think it's difficult to get straight into a club as director of football and be a success instantly. There is a risk with every signing, especially nowadays more so with the increased fee's and pressure.

We are experts on here apparently, but the majority on here thought Schneiderlin and Depay would be excellent signings and their profile was in line with what we now clamour for. Done well at a lesser but still competitive club, were at a good age and expected to reach their next level at United and have their prime here.

Who's fault was their signings for being a flop? Was it the recruitment team for identifying poor players who could never fit into United, or was it the manager's for not getting the best out of them on the pitch. If they had went Liverpool at the time, would they have fitted in well and been a resounding success?

The main thing that needs to happen is Woodward fecking off from any actual foot related matters and let experienced, competent people handle them no matter what their titles are.

And I don't mean "let's hire a puppet who'll take the blame while I continue to play real life FM" business, which Woodward may very well try to do.

Funny how we have time and resources to appoint a new PR person, but we're still waiting on a DOF

I hope the fans get nasty with Woodward next time he shows his face at Old Trafford.

Was only thinking this earlier myself.

Shows how fecked up the priorities are at the club when employing someone to sugarcoat 7 years of failure to the fans is seen as more important than implementing actual, constructive change to the footballing structures.

Please elaborate.

He ignored PSGs main issue which was in center midfield and never created any depth, provoked a mess with Rabiot and was hostile with the managers, presumably because he wanted Mourinho.
