Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

I think the fact Woodward wouldn’t back Mourinho in the transfer market then the subsequent push for a director of football speaks volumes about what this role will entail, itl be a position awarded to somebody who can identify players to build teams with a clear strategy and playing style. Those naming ex players like Butt etc are way off the mark in what United require for this role, we need somebody who’s one of the best in the world at possessing player database/transfer knowledge.

Think Atletico Madrid
Sevilla
Juventus

Directors that build teams without just buying shiny new toys

In terms of DOF, who are the likely candidates that the club would be looking at?

Any names been thrown out there?

Andrea Berta from Atletico Madrid has been linked quite a bit over the past couple of months along with Juventus Fabio Paratici. Two very respectable names within the football world.

The DOF that's going to solve all our problems, everyone he signs will be a success, he'll be as good Tixki and we'll be back challenging City in no time

Come on, appoint someone!
I think this will be now a priority. The new DoF will become central to discussions for a permanent manager. I've been hearing all day it was Jose who wanted full control of the footballing side of the club. Woodward just went along and this was likely the reason why they were not on the same wavelength on transfers.

Hasn't the latter only recently taken the job for good at Juve? Worked underneath that ?Moratti guy, and given the full job now that Moratti has gone to Inter/AC.

Monchi not available? He signs some seriously exciting players, be interesting what he could do with our budget

May I say Paul Scholes? I don't think he will be a good manager, but maybe a perfect DoF.

Probably a silly question but what’s happened to the rest of Jose’s staff like those dodgy mafia looking guys? They sacked as well?

Managers usually bring their own staff with them so presumably they'd go with Jose.

No, they replaced Marotta with Paratici, he is both general manager(board member) and DOF for the moment but there was rumors that they were after a DOF.

This appointment will be more important than the managerial appointment. We've seen how little impact a change of manager can have when the structure above is in place and has a plan for the short and long term.

Yeah that’s my thinking but I haven’t seen any mention of his coaches getting the boot as well?

this one is key ... they'll absolutely have to nail this appointment. Can't really afford to botch it and be set back several years yet again.

I want someone with a modern philosophy and a good track record in a similar position. Fingers crossed.

Mitchell would be the outstanding candidate. British. Mancunian. Proven. Also has been exposed to the great workings of Red Bulls set up. Ultimately, has worked with Pochettino, who is definitely our number 1 target as manager.

It all just makes too much sense and with our club making sense is not really on the agenda over the last few years.

This is the appointment we need to get absolutely spot on.

Simply cannot afford to get it wrong.

Was it Ferguson who said that only a big personality with experience could manage United? When they walked through the door they would realise the different level the club operates at.

This is the reason we need a director of football and why the talk of Howe, Rose and Hutter doesn't seem feasible at the moment. We need somebody who will allow us to hire talented but inexperienced managers.

Who are the top guys in this field? The only one I know is the fella at City. Who is the best in the world we should be trying to get?

Luis Campos and Paul Mitchell come to mind. Maybe we could have both considering the size of the club. They’d certainly have plenty to do in the medium term.

Will be a welcome appointment. Too many clueless people sat on the board without an ounce of how to run football matters.

Need the DOF and someone else in to assist him. Get that part of the structure right and it will be the most important thing we do post SAF imho.

Maybe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being lined up to take over as DoF in the summer, when his Interim Manager post finishes.

I was thinking that too and posted a similar thought in the Solskjær thread.

He may not be the one and only DoF, but I could see him as one of a few ‘technical directors’ at the club, as I feel we need like at least 2 guys handling the football operations.

Why would Solskjær get the job as Director of Football? He has no experience. I think the club need to be looking at the best people in this field, whoever that might be.

Who trust Woodward to get this right?

I trust him to get the sponsorships but getting the right people?

No, just never renew his contract in mid. The Board arranged a 2+1 contract for a special reason unfortunately it was wise to do so. Should have let the old contract run but offer a special bonus for the 3rd year if he can deliver and break his 3rd year syndrome. Most fans don't necessarily expect us to win the league in 3rd year, but at least we should be right in the mix , seeing some improvement from last season.
Yup, that was a huge mistake and Woody is always taken to the cleaners when it comes to contract negotiations.

I would have thought OGS would want to use this role as a springboard for his managerial career. He's still young and expect he had aspirations as a manager he wants to achieve first.

The DoF will be reporting to Woodward apparently. Not my ideal scenario.

Woody is a pile of crap and I he hope he works well With the DoF not deciding not too take any advice and overruling him at every opportunity because he thinks he knows more about football than him....and oh yeah because he can. '

In my opinion Woodward is a greasy piece if steaming turd of course I could be wrong:lol:
