Surely not now after selling a home grown player for pure profit?Re perm deal I believe WH have FFP issues

Martinez and Shaw aren't really part of it as they are played exclusively on the left. But he actually is fifth choice. Varane, Lisandro, Lindelof and Shaw are all ahead of him.
If Varane or Lisandro are injured, then Lindelof replaces the injured one. If both are injured, then Lindelof and Shaw replace them. He will need Lisandro, Varane and Lindelof not being available for him to play.
I think there may have been one game towards the end of the season where Bruno kept it, but in all the others he did hand it to Maguire anytime he came on.I don’t remember seeing Bruno giving his captains armband when Maguire came on as sub in second half of the season?
What a WUM! 8/10 would recommend....

I'd say it's pretty much a certainty Maguire won't be captain this season though even if he is still here.
I was commenting specifically on the WUM level of the post, not disagreeing with the content. I thought it was a sharp reply..... continueNot a wum at all. Blaming a millionaire footballer for not taking a pay to save a billionaire some money is ridiculous.
StrangeThis is the best transfer we could hope for. I'd take the sale or Maguire over a striker purchase any day of the week.
Alexis Sanchez methinksWorst transfer in our history? Come on....
I’m only a guesser like most in here, so forgive me if this sounds daft, but please consider that if he wasn’t a much better defender in a more traditional system then how on earth did he become not just an expensive central defender but the most expensive central defender ever in the history of the game?
And ok, with the benefit of hindsight, it’s pretty damn obvious that Utd paid at least £20million too much for him but, remembering the clamour at the time, he’d have sold 10 times over if he’d had a £60million price tag at that point.
I remember reading threads on this very forum at that time and iirc the vast majority on here, all football fans who‘d watched plenty of him doing what he did in the way he did it, were enthusiastic for his acquisition if somewhat puzzled by the 8 being where a 6 should be in the sums being bandied about.
IMO the way the game has changed in the last few years has made Maguire obsolete at the top level, but doesn’t mean that he wasn’t very very good at what he did when his particular attributes were in high demand because they were a valued asset in games played as they were back in the day.
Football’s much more fluid nowadays, defenders in the expansive in-vogue systems of play need to be quick witted, fast, agile, technically excellent, cultured etc. All the things that big Harry is definitely not.
However, it’s worth noting for comparison that in systems of play in international football, that lag behind top flight league football because fluidity is difficult if not impossible to impose when squads have very little time training together, Maguire remained a staunch regular in a good England side and looked generally good doing it while at the same time looking like a lumbering ox pulling a cart load of turnips when playing in the Premier League.
I stand by my opinion that he was a very good football player at the time of his record transfer fee but that the game has moved on and his once positive attributes are a downside at this juncture.
I also think that he could still be a valuable player in a side playing deep defensive football at a lower level but that his whacky wages are pinching out any demand for him in the bud.
Exactly, I can think of many transfers worst than Maguire to United. We overpaid for sure though, that's a valid point right thereAlexis Sanchez methinks
such a disappointing one
Because anybody can see any player play these days, and Maguire has been painfully bad for a good while now. Also outside England he's not a big name at all, or if he is, it's for all the wrong reasons. It may be a bit unfair because he may have been a decent player in the past, but my impression is that outside England he's basically the laughing stock of United and nobody cares much more than that about him.How come there hasn’t been more interest from Saudi league teams for the United captain? He seems to check all the boxes for them, big name, reduced recent performances, and a large salary. Martial, Fred, Telles, and Maguire all fit the profile..I bet you could get 100m for the lot of them. With that windfall you could pick the 9 you want most without FFP or cash flow issues.
I wonder if the lack of interest in our players from Saudi is related to the club’s potential takeover by Qatar?
there was a time when a Maguire injury ahead of Ole's european final was a major blow.....Exactly, I can think of many transfers worst than Maguire to United. We overpaid for sure though, that's a valid point right there
It's the fact that we overpaid so much, people were expecting a Varane or VVD............... but then we got Varane and things became a little more clearer if they weren't already... No bad feelings toward him from me, just time to part ways.there was a time when a Maguire injury ahead of Ole's european final was a major blow.....
He's been dogshit since the Greek issue summer but people have short memories on him.
He's never been a great defender but he was good in the early part of his United career.
He needs a move as he cant play in a progressive side - West Ham a great move
But isn't the point of a sweeper keeper to sort out some of that? His lack of agility and pace in 1v1 situations will be more visible when we are expected to play a higher line this season without DDG in goal.

I don't see how there will be more situations unless every opposition teams goes long against us and that's not something I'd expectSome yes, but there will be more situations that he will be expected to deal with 1v1 in open space than before.

Sanchez by far was a worse transfer. Not only did he flop harder it was made even worse that we played him at a position where we actually had 2 good LW at the time already in martial and rashford. At the time I thought there'd be no way we would be stupid enough to spend that to bring in Sanchez and not play him at RW, then was like wtf we actually areAlexis Sanchez methinks

I think the scenario of 1v1's is overstated, sure it'll happen now and then but not as much as some seem to think IMONot only from long balls, as a team we will be expected to play a much higher line than before, and if we concede possession higher up the pitch than the CB’s will be expected to deal with 1v1 situation. Can you imagine Maguire being close to the half way line chasing back when the opposition player runs at him?

I don't get why having a different keeper makes a 1v1 with a CB anymore likelyIt will for sure happen more than when we had DDG in goal.

So where is our superstar DM Casemiro, he's there to negate that possibility as much as is feasibleI have already explained that in my last post, and by the way it isn’t only just 1v1 but also covering the spaces behind him that is another concern.
