Maguire | he stays!

But he actually is fifth choice. Varane, Lisandro, Lindelof and Shaw are all ahead of him.

If Varane or Lisandro are injured, then Lindelof replaces the injured one. If both are injured, then Lindelof and Shaw replace them. He will need Lisandro, Varane and Lindelof not being available for him to play.
Martinez and Shaw aren't really part of it as they are played exclusively on the left.

If Varane isn't playing it is Lindelof and Maguire competing to replace him. Considering Varane's injury-proneness (and him being rested to avoid those injuries) there will actually be quite a lot of games up for grabs there. Towards the end of last season Lindelof obviously won that battle which made Maguire third choice for that side, but he may back himself to overtake Lindelof and be second choice.

If WH have FFP issues then surely we can include an obligation to buy the following year? As much as we need the money now but I’d much rather this than keeping a depreciating asset that we know won’t suit ETH style of football.

I don’t remember seeing Bruno giving his captains armband when Maguire came on as sub in second half of the season?
I think there may have been one game towards the end of the season where Bruno kept it, but in all the others he did hand it to Maguire anytime he came on.

I'd say it's pretty much a certainty Maguire won't be captain this season though even if he is still here.

Fair enough. And yes the media are trying to create a non-issue when everyone (Maguire included) don’t expect to be the captain of Manchester United.

Not a wum at all. Blaming a millionaire footballer for not taking a pay to save a billionaire some money is ridiculous.
I was commenting specifically on the WUM level of the post, not disagreeing with the content. I thought it was a sharp reply..... continue

I’m just resigned to the fact that we’re stuck with him on our books for two more seasons. I reckon he stays this term and stinks the place up and then goes on loan next year before being released for free. Then the worst transfer in our history will be complete

I’m only a guesser like most in here, so forgive me if this sounds daft, but please consider that if he wasn’t a much better defender in a more traditional system then how on earth did he become not just an expensive central defender but the most expensive central defender ever in the history of the game?
And ok, with the benefit of hindsight, it’s pretty damn obvious that Utd paid at least £20million too much for him but, remembering the clamour at the time, he’d have sold 10 times over if he’d had a £60million price tag at that point.

I remember reading threads on this very forum at that time and iirc the vast majority on here, all football fans who‘d watched plenty of him doing what he did in the way he did it, were enthusiastic for his acquisition if somewhat puzzled by the 8 being where a 6 should be in the sums being bandied about.

IMO the way the game has changed in the last few years has made Maguire obsolete at the top level, but doesn’t mean that he wasn’t very very good at what he did when his particular attributes were in high demand because they were a valued asset in games played as they were back in the day.

Football’s much more fluid nowadays, defenders in the expansive in-vogue systems of play need to be quick witted, fast, agile, technically excellent, cultured etc. All the things that big Harry is definitely not.
However, it’s worth noting for comparison that in systems of play in international football, that lag behind top flight league football because fluidity is difficult if not impossible to impose when squads have very little time training together, Maguire remained a staunch regular in a good England side and looked generally good doing it while at the same time looking like a lumbering ox pulling a cart load of turnips when playing in the Premier League.

I stand by my opinion that he was a very good football player at the time of his record transfer fee but that the game has moved on and his once positive attributes are a downside at this juncture.
I also think that he could still be a valuable player in a side playing deep defensive football at a lower level but that his whacky wages are pinching out any demand for him in the bud.

I'm not saying he wasn't a much better defender in a more traditional system, I'm saying that this isn't unique to him. Yes, Maguire will look more solid when his team is sitting deep, spaces are tight and he's constantly shielded by a DM and is allowed to hoof it out. But that applies to all CBs, even the modern ones. Maybe their more modern strengths such as pace and build up play aren't as important to you as they would be for a team following a modern approach but they don't hurt either and if such a CB is available at the same price, why would you go for Maguire?

And that's the case, actually. Our own Tapsoba is heavily linked with Tottenham for example for a reported fee of €50m which is roughly the same as the price tag you gave Maguire and I'd say he's better than him in every single discipline, be it traditional or modern. And right now, there are many CBs like that on the market. France is absolutely flooding the market with them. It is just a very bad price-performance ratio, even if you factor out the stick you'll get for signing him.

Maguire would do really well for a defensive side like West Ham......

Great move for him if true

How come there hasn’t been more interest from Saudi league teams for the United captain? He seems to check all the boxes for them, big name, reduced recent performances, and a large salary. Martial, Fred, Telles, and Maguire all fit the profile..I bet you could get 100m for the lot of them. With that windfall you could pick the 9 you want most without FFP or cash flow issues.

I wonder if the lack of interest in our players from Saudi is related to the club’s potential takeover by Qatar?
Because anybody can see any player play these days, and Maguire has been painfully bad for a good while now. Also outside England he's not a big name at all, or if he is, it's for all the wrong reasons. It may be a bit unfair because he may have been a decent player in the past, but my impression is that outside England he's basically the laughing stock of United and nobody cares much more than that about him.

It would too good to be true. If it's goes through it will be a one-year loan deal, where we still pay his salary or something. We have no ruthlessness and no ability to make deals.

Exactly, I can think of many transfers worst than Maguire to United. We overpaid for sure though, that's a valid point right there
there was a time when a Maguire injury ahead of Ole's european final was a major blow.....

He's been dogshit since the Greek issue summer but people have short memories on him.

He's never been a great defender but he was good in the early part of his United career.

He needs a move as he cant play in a progressive side and each performanceis strewn with major errors these days - West Ham a great move

It's the fact that we overpaid so much, people were expecting a Varane or VVD............... but then we got Varane and things became a little more clearer if they weren't already... No bad feelings toward him from me, just time to part ways.

anyone who suggests allowing him to leave on loan needs a slap to the head.....even if we sell him for 20m it's just better to move him on and not have to deal with the distraction anymore much like ronaldo

His lack of agility and pace in 1v1 situations will be more visible when we are expected to play a higher line this season without DDG in goal.
But isn't the point of a sweeper keeper to sort out some of that?

Some yes, but there will be more situations that he will be expected to deal with 1v1 in open space than before.
I don't see how there will be more situations unless every opposition teams goes long against us and that's not something I'd expect

He’s an asset in a Third of the games we will play maybe half next year. If we want good cup runs I’d say losing him for a loan or where we subsidise any wages is completely pointless. 40m plus offer then sell anything other and Liverpool get that for similar age players who add nothing compared to him. To West Ham he’s better than anything else they would get for sure and be 8/10 most weeks in their set up.

Not only from long balls, as a team we will be expected to play a much higher line than before, and if we concede possession higher up the pitch than the CB’s will be expected to deal with 1v1 situation. Can you imagine Maguire being close to the half way line chasing back when the opposition player runs at him?

Alexis Sanchez methinks

such a disappointing one
Sanchez by far was a worse transfer. Not only did he flop harder it was made even worse that we played him at a position where we actually had 2 good LW at the time already in martial and rashford. At the time I thought there'd be no way we would be stupid enough to spend that to bring in Sanchez and not play him at RW, then was like wtf we actually are

I think the scenario of 1v1's is overstated, sure it'll happen now and then but not as much as some seem to think IMO

All I know is watching Shaw at cb at the end there were at least 4-5 instances where just having a slight bit of speed was enough to shut down a chance that with maguire it would've been a player thru on goal.

wtf did he need to go on twitter announcing that he lost his captains role??? ffs...it's obvious EtH doesn't want you at the club, time to move on

I don't get why having a different keeper makes a 1v1 with a CB anymore likely

I have already explained that in my last post, and by the way it isn’t only just 1v1 but also covering the spaces behind him that is another concern.

Very odd post, feels a bit like airing dirty laundry where it's not needed.

He could have easily kept that behind closed doors and moved on.

Can’t remember anyone else releasing a statement after being stripped off captaincy.

He is a weird bloke.

So where is our superstar DM Casemiro, he's there to negate that possibility as much as is feasible

Losing the ball high up the field IMO means a ball over the top is more likely than a 1v1 with a CB, in a foot race Maguire will lose that of course but that's why we're buying a sweeper keeper to prevent some of that

Is Maguire our best option, no of course he isn't, but he's nowhere near as bad as is made out
