Maguire | he stays!

TH should just tell him he wont win his place back and he wont be captain if he stays. Also give him shirt No 48 or something like that if he refuses.

If he wants to stay I don’t really mind, feel like we live in cuckoo land thinking anyone will pay big money for him. He’s not getting games at LCB but I actually reckon he’ll get a good amount at RCB if he stays. Varane just always looks on the verge of pulling his hammys and I think no DDG will help him immensely. He’ll never be an £80m player but I think he can be a solid squad player for us.
The problem would be that if Maguire comes in for Varane we would not be able to play the same way. He’s not a viable backup option because of that alone.

Shame this news didn't materialize earlier when KMJ was still available. ETH just doesn't rate him and he need to realize that and salvage his legacy at a different club. I get the feeling he will opt for a move and take a little lower salary vs sit on a contract in the fridge if mgmt talk straight to him.

He's not good enough to be at United.
He's a disaster

I like his PR game. Stuffs like training three times a week to be better/to get his place back is not and should not be an exclusive. I feel like there are more players, I believe even most of them train by themselves just without media coverage. It's like saying a software engineer is learning a new language/framework away from work to improve. Well, isn't that normal? what's special about it?

Harry Maguire wants to stay but he also wants to leave. Posted 4 hours apart.

Yeah, nobody knows anything about what he wants.
Can’t get better wages elsewhere, gets to play here and there, gets to make insane bloopers, always talked about, still gets picked for England, I mean why would he leave???

Firstly I don’t think he suits us tactically - it’s hard to play a high line with him in the team.

Secondly while I do think he’s a decent / good CB, he has a huge albatross around his neck having become the ultimate football meme of this generation. That stigma doesn’t wash easily and it’s not so with age or immaturity either. He needs a move away from the glaring limelight of Manchester United to repair his club career.

Its easy to see why he isn't leaving. Maguire thinks he is better than the likes of West Ham. Yeah they won the Europa conference but they are relegation fodder and just lost their best player. At best they will be what 10th? At worst relegated. He might be a joke to a lot of people but he's not that sht. If a half decent team come in for him i.e. Tottenham, Juve then he will go.

Hopefully he believes he can go in there and replace Rice in regards to the captaincy and driving force behind the team. It feels like the sort of thinking he has as a player.

I also believe Moyes would be all for it, he feels like a Moyes player and wouldn’t look out of place at West Ham. They’re a good club and London living might also be a factor. He’ll be guaranteed his England place and playing week in week out.

I can see this one happening for sure.

40M? We would be lucky to get 25M, and honestly we should sell him for 20-25M if we get an offer.

He isn't '5th' choice. He's 2nd or 3rd at right CB behind the unreliable Varane, up against the average at best Lindelof. The idea that he's miles from a starting spot for us isn't exactly true.
Eight (8) Premier League starts last season. Eight!

I'm extremely surprised Chelsea haven't gone for him. Whatnot with Koulibaly is gone, and T. Silva is 39 y.o. this year.

To be honest, I thibk you should be happy if you find a club that's willing to pay his salary. The fan reaction will be bad enough for the buying club anyway. Now imagine it with a fee of 40m pound. Even in case of 25m, it will be a catastrophe. And to be honest, I don't know why anybody would pay that even if you leave the whole meme thing aside as there are so many CBs emerging right now that don't have the glaring weaknesses of Maguire and won't make blunders every other match.

I don't know why you price him at 40m. Probably it is an accounting matter or something like that.

If he is leaving no one is paying his wages as they are.

Going through the rumours, it sounds like Man Utd are prepared to pay 10 million to Maguire to help with the move, which drops his wages to a level most stable prem teams could afford.

Given he has a book value of roughly 26-27 million these days, combined with the payoff, you can see why Man Utd would push for 35-40m. Itd represent a minimal profit in book keeping terms.

Personally I don't see west ham being able to stretch that far with all the glaring gaps that need filling, at least this season. I can see us loaning and then buying next season, especially once his court date is done as well. Our FFP situation will have vastly improved by then as well with 3 years of European football on the accounts as well.

Yes, I imagined something along those lines. Selling him for a lower price could mean you could afford less transfers this summer so ironically it might make more sense to keep him and adresss other positions. Sometimes FFP can produce rather absurd results.

Several CM/DM types somewhere in the region of 30-45 million (Palhinha, James Ward Prowse, Alvarez, I'd put your very own McTominay towards the bottom of that range as well) Zakaria seems quite likely at this point as you say so Zakaria plus one of those above, probably an outlay between them of 50-60 million there. We are after another LM as Moyes wants a more direct goal scoring player there (thats why we were linked to Barnes, Newcastle did want him but thats gone dead) seems like we are budgeting 25-40 million there as well and then another CB to rotate/start for/with Zouma and Aguerd.

Maguire would IMO fit into that last category, and personally I can see some real merit to him coming here, but I don't think we have the budget for silly money, our budget for all the other options back there (Luiz, Tah) is somewhere in the 20 million range. I think that gives you a rough ballpark of what West Ham can spend in that position, 20, maybe 25 at a real push. I suspect the wages might be a bigger stumbling block mind you.

A loan to buy however and given our FFP position will be better next year with more Rice money AND higher profit in 2023 vs 2019 (which is currently counted due to Covid) means that 20 million might stretch to 30 next year instead, so it probably makes sense for Man Utd as well financially, to get more a little later on.
Fair enough. I think the only eventuality where we would accept a loan is if it came with an obligation to buy, although I'm not sure how that works in relation to our own FFP position.

It's only really news in the sense that West Ham officially sold Declan Rice yesterday. Maguire can't be sold until there's a team who are willing to match our valuation and his wages, and they might be one of the few who can afford to do that now.

I can understand that perspective but I personally think his troubles are mostly due to him not being the right player for the modern systems of play adopted by the top teams.
IMO He excelled in a low block where physical size, strength, grappling technique and the ability to hoof the ball out of the zone were of great benefit (hence his initial valuation - albeit wildly inflated).
The modern systems of play require speed of thought, agility, ball retention and passing ability. When you include the clampdown on wrestling opposition players to the floor (always was a Big ‘Arry speciality) that adds up to the modern game requiring things that he never was good at, combined with what he was best at making him a penalty liability, and it’s easy to see why he struggles.
Add the burden of his whacky wages and it leaves him stuck where he is.

But I don’t think it means that he couldn’t be a good contributor in a side playing a less modern style of football, so I think he’ll end up going out on loan with subsidised wages so that he can prove himself at a lower level and be sold in a year or so.

I recon that he was a good football player in the circumstances of football systems and refereeing a few years ago but that the tide of football’s come in and left him drowning. But I also recon that in the right circumstances he could thrive, so I say throw him a line by putting him out on loan to somewhere that he’ll fit in better.

I see wheere you're coming from in principle. But let's be real, the circumstances you describe make life easier for any CB. Playing a low block might compensate for a few weaknesses Maguire has and other CBs valeud at roughly the same price don't have but that doesn't mean that they would still be better as they offer the same things and more. They might not be able to play out their pace or speed of thought to the same extent as in a more ambitious role as much but at least occasionally while not being worse at what Maguire does best.

Even without the whole meme thing he'd be overpriced at 40m but with that in mind, a potential buyer would not only pay above market value, he'd also pay above market value to make himself the laughing stock of the football world and a shitstorm from his own fans. Would be a different story at a moderate price but probably you just can't afford a book loss right now. Maybe a loan with an obligation to buy next year could solve the issue.

There is enough leeches feeding on this club. If Maguire digs in and stays he can add himself to the Toxic list.
