Maguire | he stays!

Again: no, he will not if Maguire is reduced to a pure fringe player at United (not to mention one that everybody knows is not really wanted by the manager).

He picked him for the last World Cup after Maguire had lost his status as a starter for United, but that was, then, a recent situation and Maguire actually played a lot - relatively speaking - for United due to injuries.

If Maguire turns into a figure who's only a member of United's squad because we can't get anyone to buy him (due to money issues), and he'll be reduced to making cameo appearances in pointless matches (which will further enhance his unfortunate "meme" status), there's no chance Southgate will keep picking him and (certainly not) starting him.

The point is that everyone and his granny knows that ETH doesn't fancy Maguire. He won't start and he won't be a preferred backup either. He's essentially finished at United. And there's no chance whatsoever that a player like that will keep his England status intact if he doesn't move on now.
You're very certain of this. Based on what we've seen from Southgate , what we've seen with his loyalty to players, I can just equally say adamantly

Again, yes, he will!

The choices for cb for England now are not as strong and unless Maguire is injured, a sudden crop of top cbs similar to stones appear at the top clubs, or Maguire gets exactly 0 minutes (not even few min subs appearances) Southgate is picking Maguire for the England squad

Yeah, alright, let's see.

Hopefully we won't, though (as hopefully he'll be moved on, which would be beneficial to all parties involved).

I think there will be interest in Maguire. He has his faults, but played in the correct system he can be useful to certain teams. Our problem was we had a keeper who didn't come off his line, plus we played with McFred, neither of which is a recognised DM. Teams know we need to sell, so no-one will be showing their hand early, hoping to snag him late on for a cheaper price

I think this is fair. With England, he has a keeper who comes off his line more and imo is a better passer than DDG was since Maguires been here. Also the added help of the rapid Walker who can clean up behind. And England tend to dominate 90% of games they are faced with.

For United, I think his best run was when we had Henderson behind him. The defence looked more assured as a unit.

It's not his value that is the stumbling block for most clubs, It's the wages that are a killer. Very few Premier league clubs are in a position to pay a player 200,000 a week.
We struggle to sell players on relatively low wages as well.
Teams think we are mugs. Theythink all they have to do is bide their time and we will fold and offer some sort of giveaway.

It doesn't matter. He is one of the most consistent and key player for England under Southgate. He was 5th choice CB this year at Utd but whenever he played for England, he was still very good. As long as Southgate is in charge, Maguire will play key roles for England. To be fair to Maguire, he deserves his England place.

No player, who can't command a regular starting position for their club, deserves an international place in a squad like England's. I mean less than the paltry 15 league appearances he got this year. It's patently absurd.

What's patently absurd is that there doesn't seem to be any obvious replacement that Southgate might trust

i get 7 posts now, and i'll waste them however i choose, you cheesey-knobbed cnut.
Well at least I can spell my mates names correctly, what you do with your limited posting ability is up to you

He might be overly conservative but I can't see him picking Maguire if he's scrabbled around for 10 league appearances or less.
I can - he's pretty much nailed on to be in the next squad for the September games where most of the players will have had little game time, if he doesn't feck up then he'll be in the squad for the next round

Colwill will leapfrog him in the pecking order if he gets regular playing time at his next club.

Expecting Guehi too as well if he Harry sticks around as the 5th choice with us. In a just world Tomori already would have jumped his place but Southgate doesn't seem to think English players not named Bellingham exist outside of the Premier League

Don't always agree with the clubs position when it comes to negotiation but 35M for Maguire is good business if the right level of club acquires him. It's bad business for United considering his initial fee but relatively decent for the buying club. Maguire just isn't cut out at the top level domestically, he would probably find a wealth of benefit in a club with lower expectation and the tactical accountability to make use of his decencies in defence.

If he were on 140k a week, he would have been bought by now. The damage Woodward and co. did in that decade spell is tragic. The club that should have been competing at the very top, getting humiliated in the Europa League with players on 4 times what they are worth.

Some Saudi club looking to buy Henderson (allowing Liverpool to chase Lavia) while having no interest in Maguire makes zero sense to me.

Does it? I imagine they want a great player and also some PR (a popular player) Maguire is a 30 year old laughing stock, why would they want him when they can get like Koulibaly? The only team who will want to buy Maguire is a mid table PL team managed by a British dinosaur, so maybe West Ham.

Maguire is a meme at this stage.

Imagine the stick that a Premier League manager would take if he signed Harry Maguire?

Forget Villa, Spurs and Newcastle. The only clubs i could see him fit in at would be the ones battling to survive. And they wouldn't want to take on his wages.

We are stuck with him.

I would make sense if said club was managed by a certain Scouser though

Because no one wants to buy a meme player everyone agrees is not only a terrible footballer, but also one of the worst transfers in history. Any manager who buys him risks becoming a meme himself. It's career ending if it goes badly.

Would you stake your career on Harry Maguire not being a lumbering gaffe machine on a football pitch?

For a while Harry was actually pretty decent for us, but his collapse was steep. Let's see if we can get Villa to take him from us.

Well he is one of the most successful England managers we've ever had, so if he's a chump then god knows what some of the others were
Just my personal opinion . We win the games we should win but don't really shine against top opposition. I find him extremely conservative & lacking in imagination.

They've just signed Pau Torres and already have a Maguire-esque player in Mings. Emery also isn't a mug.

Honestly think West Ham are our best hope, or failing that some Italian club - but the feckers always take the piss with their insistence on loan deals or lowballed bids paid in instalments over 30 years.

A shame Southgate wasn't sacked after the world cup. He might have landed a PL job and would have loved Maguire.

And that's possibly what makes him as successful as he has been, however he does need to take more risks, the current crop of players are more attuned to that kind of football than perhaps his earlier teams lacked so maybe we'll see some more

This.

Imagine you own a Saudi club and you can buy a England international, do you buy :

A) The captain of a succesfull team that won the EPL and the CL in which that player also played his part

or

B) The captain of a team that hasnt been doing great and where that captain has become so much of a meme that even Ghana's parliament use him to descibe disaster.

I find it strange that someone thinks it makes any sense to buy Maguire instead of Henderson. Especially when PR is also taking into consideration when buying a player. Im afraid we are stuck with Maguire. No manager is going to risk his career on buying Harry Maguire. Too bad Big Sam didnt get a new EPL job... he might have considered buying him.

Aye. Moyes may be our only hope. Surely Maguire must be an upgrade on Zouma.

Maybe, but for the money your wanting and the wages he wants there isn't a chance we go that far. My guess max we would go is maybe 20m and you'd have to supplement those wages as well since them break our structure big time.

Effectively he needs to be clearly our best player for the wages he'd require and he clearly won't be, its debatable he's better than Zouma these days, yet alone worth more to the team than a Bowen or Paqueta

Problem is he is clearly declining, and will have 0 sell on value so its just dead money for a player shot of confidence. Maybe you can Dawson him but who knows.

His collapse was steep the moment our opponent realised the very easy pressing formation/square needed to make him panic and start making mistakes.

Harry's wages are without a doubt an albatross and defensively West Ham are pretty decent, so there's probably no reason for Moyes to give it much thought. But I'm not sure Harry is actually declining as much as he is a player who just couldn't but it at Old Trafford where the expectations and scrutiny are well beyond any other club in the PL. A single mistake will be talked about for months at OT, whereas for most other clubs in England the player is allowed to get on with it.

Perhaps we can work out something with Levy, who really needs defenders. Or maybe Everton, although I doubt Harry would ever agree to a move to Everton.

I wish you’d all stop bumping this thread just to moan about nothing happening. Many of us come in because we see activity, thinking some news but alas it’s just you guys talking shite

It’s the Kane thread that gets me excited and disappointed in the matter of 60 seconds

He is that bad even a Saudi team won’t bid for him. I would rank him as the worst signing in the clubs history. Di Maria we got our money back. Sanchez high wages but a free. Pogba underperformed on the whole but still had a few great seasons and games.
