If we can't sell him he stays, not much else can be done. For himself though he needs to move to another club Southgate can't keep picking him if he's a bit part player. Unless he feels his England career is done ? For him and Utd he needs to move on. Better for both.

In a normal year we wouldn’t have a lot of say in the matter but this year is an international tournament year so that can be used to get our way. If we go ahead and sign the defender that we want, and on top of that, leave him off the tour in July and make it clear to him that he won’t be considered for the match day squad, then we are putting him in a position whereby to stay at United would mean sacrificing his England career. Which I don’t think he’d do.

He needs to told that he's 4th/5th choice CB and no longer captain. Bringing him on 10 mins to go to take captains armband is stupid.

Newcastle can't splash masses amounts of cash around owing to FFP. They can kick the can down the road by agreeing to pay the fee next year. say £5mil loan fee this year then £25mil mandatory fee the year after that, along with having CL revenue behind them to take into account would actually be a good deal for all still.
We're losing some transfer fee to use this Summer. But that's still better than he's here stinking out the place, I guess.

Yeah, although a club really shouldn’t do that unless it’s for disciplinary issues. A player adhering to his contract should not be ostracised.
