Maguire | he stays!

That would work or at the very least don't let him keep privileges he hadn't earned during his time with the club.

What would they be?

Get recruitment right so it happens less. Become less well known in boardrooms for saying yes to everything, like pulling out of the Rabiot negotiations last summer, only doing it for years where we are being treated like the mugs we currently are…That being said with Maguire we’ve played it well. He gets plenty of games, he plays well enough to attract teams to enquire I’m sure, we don’t treat him like he’s not good enough re the captaincy, anyone that buys him can say they have bought the United captain. He’ll be a stalwart for any club outside the top 4.

I'd agree with some of that, but without building a time machine, I don't see how a less soft approach will help us with his current situation.

Of course he doesn't want to leave. He'd surely have to take a pay cut and he knows he can sit on our bench and be our cheerleader without risking showing how bad he is every week.
I don't think that's the case. I think he still hopes to get in to the team.

If you look at things from his perspective, he was one of the best in the league at Leicester and then he was good for us for 2 seasons, and captain on top. Things went south and he is now 4th or 5th choice, but I can see how that is difficult to accept for Harry.

It is on ETH imo to talk to him that he gets the play time that Jones did if he stays. There is no get back in to the team, no chance. Go some other place of lose the England spot.

Captaincy, shirt number and make it clear he isn't the first or even 2nd rotation option anymore.

I think he's already lost his place and I'm sure the captancy will be next. I think taking his shirt number would be more than little classless.

I think he will leave, looks like few decent clubs are interested in him.

For once Southgate might be helping us. His position will be questioned when he hardly plays a min for ManUtd.

Also for his own good he should move on and try to do a Smalling.

When Ole told Smalling he'd be a rotation option, he asked for a transfer (he was the same age as Maguire is now). And he didn't have an England spot he was trying to keep hold of, he just wanted to play.

Smalling was a true professional tbf, he never had any unearned sense of entitlement

See, this is the thing that boils my piss about Maguire.
If he wants to get back in the team he has to improve, like most of the squad has shown improvement last season. Maguire is still too slow chasing back, too ponderous on the ball and too wasteful in his passing. Now, I refuse to believe that a pro athlete won't work on those deficiencies in his game in order to keep his place in the team. If he was showing even incremental improvements in his game we'd be more likely to cut the lad some slack but he plain refuses to be honest with himself and won't put in the hard yards. His sense of entitlement will make him unsaleable this summer I reckon. He needs a serious reality check.

I don’t agree with the entitled mentality that Maguire should move on just because the club and fans want him to. Maguire has a contract, it’s his prerogative to remain if he wishes. The club can actually get rid of him at any point if they pay him the remainder of his contract up then they can terminate it.

Having seen how hostile the crowd has turned against him in the past, I think it might be a bad idea for him to stay. He'll unfortunately get lots of abuse for it and he might suffer both mentally and career wise.

Maybe his plan is to ask for a loan on a subsidised salary in order to get first team football without the financial sacrifice. I guess we'll see.

He's hardly going to say that he's happy to leave and take a pay cut to go. He is posturing so that we will have to cover the drop in salary to get rid of him. This was the £10m that was discussed a few days ago that we will have to pay him off.

He's leaving and Min-Jae is coming. Stop stressing.

It’s letting him know that he’s not needed and surplus to requirements, loads of clubs do it it’s not that big of a deal. If he wants to play then he can push for a move. Simple.

Do they? Never seen it.

Transfer listed, sure... Made to play for the reserves? Nah.

Wouldn't make any sense for the club. The only way forward is getting a fee for him and then subsidise his wages. I can't imagine he really is fine with being frozen out for the next couple of seasons.

Or they can strip the captaincy, refuse to register him in the squad for any tournament and force him to train away from the first team.

Plenty of things that people CAN do, but play stupid games win stupid prizes as they say.

That talksport tweet and the recent report from Ducker/McGrath about there being not any funds planned for a GK, all have the same feeling of trying to incite United fans and get social media engagement for those outlets. Basically, how can they make permanently online United fans most angry.

Yeh Bharwa ja raha hai ya nhe? I am sick with this stupid oaf why the feck is he not moving on. That’s why we should top paying top dollars salary to average players, the same happened with Lingard.

I think ETH just has to tell him in straight face, thats he is not going to play any slow CB next season.

A concern is there is very little to suggest Southgate's standpoint on only picking players playing regularly for their club is anything other than an empty threat. See Kalvin Phillips. Might have helped us shift him if he actually felt his England place was in jeopardy but I'm not sure the evidence is there to suggest it actually is at this point.

I swear if this slabhead feck costs us Kim Min-jae because he's too proud to admit he's behind Martinez, Varane, Lindelof AND Shaw I'll flip.
I actually think its more to do with the good direction the club has taken this season. He knows hes never gonna play at a club thats gonna be challenging for the league then Utd next season which means he picks up a medal and the premier league trophy since hes captain (if were successful). Hes using the John Terry logic that as long as hes in his kit lifting the trophy no one remember how it all happened in the years to come.

Of course the money is definitly a factor and knowing that he cant get that anywhere else is having an influence. But I could be totally wrong as well as who knows what going on in that big head of his. Like others have said I hope EtH takes the captaincy away from him. We cant be carrying on the soft soft approach after the manager made it as clear as day that he will only play Maguire when there are no CB options left.

His wages are the biggest sticking point
Yes, no one is going to pay him anywhere near what we pay him so he’ll be happy to stick around and earn £10m a year for the next three years and “fight for his place” unless we give him a huge pay off

Are you seriously suggesting that ~Ten Hag will have him as captain next year ? If he digs in and forces a stay I would struggle to let him clean the carpark after training.

Exactly. Make it clear to him that "fight for your place" is no longer an option. Leave or don't play.

I dont think EtH would let him keep the captaincy. But EtH has shown that he is willing to respect the club's way of dealing with players that are no longer wanted and the problem with that is the club have been soft on players who are refusing to leave in the past. Maguire sees that and thinks Utd wont humiliate him by taking away the captaincy and weve already seen that this season with both him and Bruno lifting the cup when really it should have just been Bruno.

Didnt EtH order Jones to vacate the senior players locker room or did I misread that somewhere? Maybe he might strip him of the captaincy next season. I dont know enough about him to be able to be sure. Maybe Ajax fans here can weigh in on how ruthless EtH was at Ajax to have better understanding.

How do we get round that

Of course he's leaving, and they'll be teams queuing up for him, if you believe it then we'll need to pay him the missed salary for the last 2 years for his deal, so I'd say £25 million is about right factoring this money in.

He doesn't strike me as the type that will just sit out the next 2 years, which is what he'll clearly be doing if he wants to sit his contract out.

If he is apparently on 190k, then i personally dont think thats too high.

How do we get round that
Mainly by not giving out huge, long contracts to players who aren’t worth them in the first place.

But now that we’re in the position I guess we either (a) give him a big pay off so that this plus his signing on fee and wages at the new club come to a similar amount or (b) send him out on loan and subsidise his wages.

We need money so which option

Harry, you can stay as 5th choice, play a few league cup and fa cup games and come on with 7mins to go against aerial teams late on.

I wonder if clowns will now consider it ‘embarrassing’ for other clubs to pursue Maguire this summer on the basis that he’s happy at United.

Actions speak louder than words, EtH preferred Shaw & Lindelof ahead of him, that is as clear as it gets.
Apparently not if he is dealing someone as thick as Maguire, who has been reportedly want to stay and fight for starting line up next season.

You know, deep in his mind maybe he would think something along the line of form is temporary but class is permanent, so he might genuinely think he has a chance next season...

I think people are worried too much about him not leaving and i'm not sure how reliable that source is that he wants to stay. Gareth Southgate has already said he has to start playing more otherwise his England place is under threat, he's sadly not well liked by a lot of his own fanbase and he probably is aware of this, and he's also a 5th choice centre back at this point. Simply has to go if he's serious about football.
