Maguire | he stays!

This club struggles to move on from players, seemingly.

I want him to leave, but this hyperbole is ridiculous. Seriously? Worst ever?
He's.
United's captain. Most expensive defender. A walking meme
Few years down the line. People will still talk about Harry Maguire

Guy has no idea the hate that's going to come his way now. Ending his pro career basically. Won't train with the first team won't be playing any games. Don't think even the NT manager will be such a fool as to pick him anymore.

There's 2 weeks to go. I think there will still be some talks behind the scenes.

Maguire can't be that dumb to sit out the next two years --- and basically kill off his career for a few million bucks when he can still earn a decent living at another club. People usually use money as a retaliation tool/justification when they are being emotional in a relationship.

I think Colwill looking pretty good and Stones presumably nailed on means he might feel he's in better shape for England since playing well for us if Varane misses time (or needs rests when we're going twice a week) might mean more than doing well for West Ham playing so deep (nobody was like oh my god Craig Dawson is doing well or seems fussed about Zouma doing well even before the cat abuse. What a sentence).

Frustrating. He just looks so clumsy and error-prone that I'd have him 5th choice behind Shaw (Malacia at LB fine he can pass it at least) and Lindelof at CB. I'm not sure how much better a young CB replacement would have been for this year, but selling Maguire for 30M, even after paying him off with 10M, would have basically paid for a good young backup to hopefully take over for Varane in 2-3 years.

Were those lesser paying jobs in the region of 50% less?
No, my job has a minimum guarantee employers can’t legally go below (i.e. scale), so I wasn’t making double the scale rate. It’s not really analogous though. For a normal working person, any pay cut is felt, whereas there isn’t a chance Maguire’s finances will be upended dropping from £190,000 per week to £120,000.

If he’s losing money on a transfer to WHU then his agent is too, right?
So I’m wondering if he’s getting the right short & long term career advice instead of being giving advice by his agent, with a different agenda?

He will surely leave……maybe his agent is negotiating with another team(s) - maybe he didn’t fancy the first opportunity that came along as they feel there is something better than WH.

we can’t be solely reliant on selling him to do anything else - just a bit of creativity like a loan and confirmed sale at the end of that - many other teams are doing this to get around FFP so why don’t we?

Well, consider the price, status and games we gave him and the litany of errors, mistakes and poor performances, he will be up there.

There have been worse players but none were made captain and were regular starters.

It's not hyperbole at all, yes worst ever - you have to take into consideration the whole package including the fee vs what was expected of him... So for me, yes worst ever. At least in my lifetime.
and the fact he was made captain...he certainly wont be remembered fondly

Fee - he didn't decide it.
Captaincy - he didn't decide it.
Regular starter - you get the idea...

He's a very limited player who was asked to do things way beyond his ability here. It's like you all have forgotten that City wanted him as well. He'd have been a useful cog in Pep's machine. We just happened to have an inept manager in Ole.

Maguire was a useful cog in Ole's machine for his first two full seasons that saw back to back top 3 finishes. That's clearly not inept for either manager or player.

Ole was then sacked after 5 PL losses into his third season. Everything that's happened to Maguire since then has been under Rangnick (an actual inept manager) and EtH.

Not sure if any other team can afford him other than the Saudi ones.

I think the only way we get rid of him is to sign another CB and make it clear to Harry that he's not even going to make the match day squad here. Don't ever give him a bench spot.

I realise that means we will take a bath with negotiating with selling him but right now he's just a bad smell we can't get rid of. Every time he comes onto the field I can feel my PTSD kicking in

I don't really want Qatar in the club, but if we didn't have the penny pinching glazers who never spend their own money, we would have basically told him to feck off or train with the reserves.

Prunier must be the original meme footballer.

I don't understand either side in this Maguire debacle to be honest. He's not wanted by the club and he must know that, so why you'd suffer the embarrassment of the situation is beyond me, I'd have been looking to do a deal on the £7m. The club should also be embarrassed, they don't want him and need reinforcements for the squad, they too should have been looking to do a deal. It'll probably turn out one side was looking to do a deal and the other side was behaving like a child.

And before anyone says anything, I have left a position for less money when I wasn't happy with the conditions. There are always other opportunities to maximise your earnings when you're doing well and in a better position. Different economies of scale, but ultimately the same effect on my bottom line earnings.

Maybe he is happy with the situation he is in, and maybe it's not embarrassing for him?

You're right, we shouldn't assume that money is the be all and end all for everyone, we equally shouldn't assume that conditions for happiness are the same for everyone.

"City wanted him"
"City wanted Fred"

Hmm...

You are maybe right, but what are the chances that becoming a meme, losing your place in the team, losing the captaincy, being overlooked for a left back in your position, being mocked by football fans in general but especially your own fans, and even being referenced mockingly in the parliament of a foreign country on a different continent is not embarrassing?

That doesn't really matter. Take Sanchez for example. Obviously quality footballer who was great for Arsenal. For us - terrible buy.

Maguire is also a terrible buy. Worst ever defender? Depends on how it look at it. When you buy someone for a world record fee, plays 1 good season, then he value nosedives and most likely we might have to pay him to let him go, draws 200k per week, coupled with terrible mistakes on the pitch which cost us games and titles (Sevilla), was made captain (pretty much the worst one I've ever seen) - all these things coupled together then it's pretty much right up there.

I've moved to a much smaller organization without any increase in compensation because it was a role I'd wanted to do. I've also been in a situation where I was in a shitty role but the money was excellent, so I hung around in spite of being frustrated. I guess it's a question of what you value more at that point in your career.

If I see it from Maguire's perspective - he knows he is unlikely to feature in the 2026 world-cup, or win the 2024 Euros with England... He's made 50+ appearances for England and won't cross 100. With his talent (or lack thereof), a good season at WestHam is not suddenly going to "revive" his career, or put him on the radar of a big CL team. His best chance of being a part (however small) of a silverware winning team is @ ManUtd in the next 2 years... He's getting paid 30% more @ ManUtd too. There's no real reason for him to move to West Ham beyond "professional pride".

The club on the other hand - probably feels that paying 7m (15 if some reports are to be believed) to Maguire is naive given that the club will have to take a risk on integrating a new unknown footballer (who will be 3rd / 4th choice CB and barely feature) for next two years. At least Maguire is a known devil, and has been quiet and hasn't kicked up a fuss during his time here.

We're not in his shorts. Maybe he's mostly oblivious (or doesn't care ) about outside noise ? Certainly he took a dive in the hierarchy and was stripped of the armband. But he did a job here for two seasons more or less, perhaps he could still at least so far he's concerned.

There's a lot of assumptions about what the pride, aspiration and priorities of players are or should be.

Why would Maguire need to pay United? You’ll need to explain that.

At the point Maguire transfers to a new club, he is no longer employed by United. As per the terms of his contract, he is no longer owed any future payments since he has agreed to no longer fulfil his contractual obligations to United.

Maguire is within his rights to refuse a transfer. That is the only way he is entitled to future payments.

If he has to forfeit payment in order to play elsewhere, he is returning money owed by the clubs balance sheet for the upcoming contract years.

That is the other version of the argument I responded to.

Fans being upset that a player wants the club to honor the value of the contract.

Makes zero sense, the club can only honor the contract if the player does.
You do not forfeit anything when you transfer, you are choosing not to fulfill the remainder of your contract. The forfeit only happens if you get made redundant/contract termination

Disappointed with both the club and Maguire tbh. Thought he would prioritize playing.

You're right, but he has previously discussed in interviews about the feedback he sees on various platforms and how he tries to block it out. He may have a good mindset with regards to ignoring things, but no matter how good you are it sinks in on some level and at some point you are kidding yourself. Judging by the way his performances keep getting worse I'd guess it has some effect, but like you say it is all assumption.

@pawanraj I mostly agree with what you write regarding his career, but it seems he does back himself to be able to do a job for United. For this he must realise that will require minutes on the pitch, which won't happen in all likelihood with United. If he does back himself to that degree why not insist on a release clause with West Ham, go prove he's still got it for a season or two and then let his performances hopefully earn him a late career move to one of the big clubs.

As it stands now all signs point towards a Bogarde, and whether you are money orientated or not that is just pathetic and will torpedo any legacy he ever had. He will become more of a meme.

Maguire didn't choose any of that officially. It's the club that doesn't want to fullfil the remainder of his contract. Maguire says he'll oblige them if they compensate him for his loss of income.

This is wrong in that case and I think you have repeated this now a dozen times, is it really so hard to understand?
Harry Maguire does not want to leave, the club wants him to leave! He says 'I'm happy to stay but if you give me 7m or 15m (whatever source you believe) of those remaining contract wages I can agree with a transfer'.

That is his point of view right now, it doesn't matter at all if he secretly wants away or hope it gets trough.
He's playing hard ball on that position and it's his right to do so. If the club wants him gone so badly, they need to pay up or maybe there is hope that he lowers his demands if they don't react.
It's a game of who blinks first.

Jesus, thats alot of money.

Just tell him, he wont be registered in CL or PL this season. Fecking parasite.

I know hes entitled to ask, if thats whats due to him. But it seems a big jump from £7mil.

One of the worst players in Utd history for the price we paid.

I think the club are playing hard ball on, we give him the payoff then where does it end, all players leaving will demand a payoff if they aren’t wanted. Hopefully it forces Maguires and Southgate’s hand, not playing then no international football so he willing leaves.
I’ve also left a job for one paying 25% less, more so the progression was believed to be better and recruiter for the company said I’d be back earning what I was on at the time within two years, once I found out it wasn’t, I jumped ship within 8 months of living in poverty. Gave me more experience to get a better job after that, same could be said of Maguire, one good season at West Ham and we will come crawling back with 400k a week 5 year contract.

I think he won't run down his contract and he's probably off next year at the latest.
Last year, no extension on the table (you'd imagine !), if slim played minutes surely he'll know there's no place to win back. Will probably be more affordable for smaller PL teams, only one remaining year of wages to bicker about.

Maybe not the optimal result for United financially speaking but apparently there was no middle ground to be found this year (so far).

It's more than the deficit of his loss of earnings between the 2 contracts (Roughly £7m), he apparently wants another£8m due to the fact that if he run his contract down he would be offered a huge signing on bonus apparently. A near 33 old Maguire with little game time in years is going to apparently get £8m signing on bonus? Can't make this stuff up.

Beyond greedy. Utd need to make a stand and put him in his place.

We as a club shouldn't be held ransom by players who are only leaving due to their own underperformance. It would be better to take the financial hit and enforce a policy of only offering X in these situations.

Loan him out with a fee if needed

Think he'll go, just the usual stuff being played out and they find a compromise somewhere in the middle....
