Maguire | he stays!

Is there a better third CB in the PL?
Yes, plenty.

Koulibaly, Akanji, Laporte, Stones (whichever you choose), Konate/Matip

Maguire isn’t even the best 3rd CB at Utd. Shaw and Casemiro are better than him at CB.

Yeah, but it's an utterly embarrassing situation on our part. We made him the most expensive CB of all time - he was never remotely good enough to begin with - and now he's on the bench as 3rd choice. I can't fecking wait to see the back of him.

It’s clearly embarrassing we spent so much on Maguire, but he was a very good CB when we acquired him and for a while thereafter. But he did collapse last season. Ole rushed him back from injury and his confidence was shattered. By all accounts he was quite decent, many said outstanding, in the recent World Cup. I’m all in for moving him on if possible, but we will have to accept that his replacement will not be up to his level.

Think that's why he's staying. There's nothing more cringe worthy than seeing him come on in the last few minutes or even injury time and the first thing he's bothered about is getting that armband. It's just embarrassing and I'm sure if we're lucky enough to get a trophy he'll elbow Bruno out of the way to lift it. Hope ETH leaves him out of the squad as we should have enough for the bench without him and then he can toddle off somewhere else in the summer.

Eth should have stripped him of the captain's armband.

The question remains...is there a better third choice CB not only in the PL but in any league today? The answer might be yes, and if it is I'd like to know who.
Of course there is, seeing as Maguire is not a 100% 3rd choice CB in his own team (Shaw is currently ahead of him as an LCB and it’s a coin-toss between him and Lindelöf overall with ten Hag choosing between them on a game-to-game basis).

I disagree. Caicedo is looking to take a step forward in his career…Man Utd squad from Brighton is a big step. Having captained his club and played at the World Cup and euros etc. Rices next step is to slot right into the starting 11 at a top club. While neither are ideal understudies for Casemiro, I would spent out €80 million on CCaicedo first.

I don’t agree that Eriksen is who we need cover for at all…mixtures of Eriksen/Sabitzer(possibly)/Fred/Mejbri for one number “8” position is pleanty. Plus Bruno could slot back in there if necessary…with ETH looking to use Sancho as a ten and with possibly Amad coming back.

We have no cover for Casemiro that doesn’t significantly change how we play. Unless Lindelof shows something in that role …as ETH has alluded to. But really we should be looking for a young and eager number 6 to learn from the best
Agree to disagree entirely.

The club will be looking for a CM this summer to be an alternate to eriksen. A tecnically accompilsed no8. We need someone like eriksen to control the tempo and recycle the ball. Casemiro has backups in fred and mctominay. Nowhere near as good agreed but backups they are.

A central midfielder, goalkeeper and striker are pressing priorities, but we're capable of signing more than three players in the summer. We managed 6 last summer if you count Dubravka.

Any replacement can be funded from the sale of Maguire, I'm sure there's a half decent, younger option in France somewhere. It's not that much of a challenge to get him out and a replacement sourced, we're capable of spinning more than one plate at a time - regardless of what the Caf tells you.

If we're counting on moving Mctominay along( and maybe sign Sabbi permanently?)
It will be 2 CM's and not 1 mate.

And you aren't counting all the deadwood/loans that we currently have. What about Bailly? Alex Telles ? Brandon Williams ? Donny ? Martial ? Pellistri ? Elanga ? Twanzebe ? Scott ? Harry ? Lindelof ?

We can't do all of these deals in 1 summer.

Was reading Kim Min Jae release clause will get active for 15 days in the summer. I would offer Napoli Maguire as Kim Min Jae replacement. If they dont want Maguire. I would pay the money, releause clause.

Kim Min-Jae is reported to earn 60K per week, while Maguire earns 190K or thereabouts. Napoli wouldn't touch a deal like this. Besides, we'd likely be better off going for another left footed bally playing centre back with Lindelof as Varane's backup likely staying.

He was fit for the city game wasn’t he? if so Shaw being selected infront of him to defend against two of the best strikers in the world is probably a sign that he should be looking elsewhere.
Its not a slight on him or Shaw, Shaw has shown he’s cable of doing the job but one of if not the most expensive Cb in the world and it looks like he is 4th or 5th choice at United. Time to move on

Cant see Maguire ever playing outside of england. He doesnt seem like that kind of guy and imo he will join a good, midtable club in the prem.@tomaldinho below/ above me.
I think its very clear by ten hags team selection. Trusting shaw over him is huge... I have no doubt he is on the way out of this club. A guy of his stature as a player (rightfully or wrongly) just cant be 4 - 5 choice. especially as a captain and 80m markee signing. Hes gone in the summer the only reason he lasted this long is people who gave their ok for this transfer tried to save face and hoped he will come good. Edit:accidentally deleted first part and had to rewrite

Of course, but the check has been deposited and here we are today.

Club teams only. The Argie NT insanely had Otamendi starting over Martinez (I'm not a huge fan of Romero, but he is competent) but technically Martinez was the third choice CB for the Argies and he's clearly superior to Maguire.
I'm not sure he's 3rd choice to be honest - Varane/Martinez/Shaw are definitely above him in the pecking order now. Is there a better 4th choice CB than Maguire (probably not) or a better 5th choice CB than Lindelof (probably not) really hammers home we've bought average to good players at great expense these last years.

As has been said on numerous occasions, Maguire’s a decent enough centre back and would walk into the current West Ham or Everton side tomorrow. The problem is his reputation has taken a knock for better or for worse, so nobody’s going to pay him the vast salary he’s accustomed to getting here and that might well become an issue unless he is looking for a move of course.

Yep. Sell Maguire, buy Kim. This is the way.

As a United fan i hope so.

I am singing U2 "I still haven't found what i am looking for"

Looking for a new Stam, Vidic or Brazil and Inter Lucio. I will lower my expectation with Kim. In the future he might reach that world class level.

You know how dedicate, determination and focus Kim is. I think Kim mentality, life style and everything. Kim is the right profile and character United shall go for.
Football Football an Football all day long. Your life is football. I think Kim is that. Steady focus. On and off the pitch. Live and breath as a football top pro.

Source is SunSport so probably completely rubbish. But for 50m (even in Euros) I would drive him to Paris myself and even throw in tickets for the Louvre.

There's absolutely no chance in hell we're recouping 50 million quid for him, unfortunately.

shouldve sold going into this year like i wanted to. Couldve prob made a decent amount of money back and reinvested it. Half couldve brought another defender body that fits more what EtH wants to do and then another position couldve added some more depth. But oh well.

Not sure about that. I reckon his reputation is better now than it was in the summer.

He had a decent World Cup, and has been fine whenever he’s come in as a sub or rotation option this season. The narrative is no longer “he’s shit”; it’s more like “he’s a poor fit for an ETH team”.

meh feel like a bit of both perhaps. He hasnt played much at all for us this year so coming into the season he had just played a lot the year before. World cup prob helped a bit but would think countered by lack of playing time here, even Shaw has played more CB it seems than him. Feel like if the world cup had been over the summer like it shouldve been it wouldve been the absolutely perfect time to sell after that since not many buy big in january transfer window.

I'm trying to remember... Other than that weird Barca link when we were chasing de Jong, were there any clubs that were in for him?

If we secure top 4 against Chelsea (and Newcastle cement 3rd tomorrow) I reckon Harry will get to start against Fulham and captain the side for the last time.

Erik has phased him out immaculately.

We want to finish third.

There is a full week before the final, I'd go for the full strength.

Yeah, he was actually subbed on more times (8) than he started games (7). Always in the squad, occasionally playing minutes. Really like the way ten Hag has sorted out the situation.

Hope there will be buyers come summer and for a decent fee. Maguire’s obviously good player and would suit teams like West Ham etc.

Aye, I had this wrong. We're level on points (just the small matter of +24 goals behind). Chelsea are capable of getting a result at home against them, though they're capable of imploding too. You're right. He'll probably only come on if things have been decided already.

This sounds far, far too good to be true. These things just don't happen to us in the transfer market.

We play Thursday-Sunday, there's no point going full strength twice and risking further fatigue and injuries to the 11 that will start the cup final. ETH has already moaned about is picking up injuries due to congestion and scheduling.

9 day rest is better than 6 when you've played the most games of anyone in Europe and the team have looked leggy for months.

All of this would be moot if we lost to Chelsea of course.

The cup final is way more important than 3rd vs 4th. If resting players against Fulham gives us an extra 1% chance in the final I'd take it.

lost in translation

Unfortunately 9/10 march and not a peep since so would say that it doesn't happen in transfer market for us.

We are pretty rubbish at getting transfer fees for our players because we overpay salaries so I fully expect Harry to go out on loan

He knows his time is up, when Luke Shaw, a LWB is picked before you at CB - its time to go.

The only issue is will he take a reduction on his almost £200k a week wages? or will he play the "I want to stay and fight for my place" card.

The other option is we subsidise his wages at whichever club he goes to. That plus the hit we will take on his transfer fee - he has been a costly mistake for us.

Seeing as he wanted to sign him so desperately, maybe Woodward could pay his wages and hire Maguire as his personal assistant.
