Madrid will come back for De Gea

Maybe so, but we haven't heard a statement to that effect from the man himself. Maybe Atletico and Barcelona just were't interested in him, so Real was the natural destination building up to the failed move. Thought if he had tunnel vision and wanted to join only Real, and no one else, then fair enough I guess. But if his motivation was to return back to Madrid to live with his girlfriend, and make a case for the Spanish national team, then Atletico would be as good of an option - plus he won't be a traitor to the blue collar fans of Atletico, and he won't be turning his back on the club that nurtured him.
Dave couldnt even bring himself to say that he wanted to leave.

However all the noises from the people that matter seem to paint exactly that. The Mendez affiliated journalist who have been his mouthpiece throughout the saga have said that. From what they have been saying, he's wanted to join Madrid for a long time, and I dont think that has changed

He doesnt seem to mind being labelled a traitor. He'll probably thrive on it imo. He's mentally very tough

If there is a buy out clause I expect him to go
If we fail to get a cl spot I expect him to go
If we get a cl spot and there is no buy out clause I'm 50/50 as to if he will stay

Apart from the Atletico fans are giving him a tonne of grief anyway, Atletico aren't going to find it easy to pay his wages and he's way more likely to win trophies at Real than Atletico.

Wouldn't say way, especially when Atletico won the Copa Del Rey in 12/13 (against Madrid), and beat Madrid and Barcelona to the title in 13/14. Atletico are also joint 1st right now with Barca

Why would he sign a new contract if he still intends on leaving at the end of the season?
It's got release clause written all over it. Why would he sign it when he knows he can leave for free and a massive pay day at the end of the season? We still get a fee (probably around the £30m we agreed in August), he gets a big backdated pay rise for the season and still gets the move he desperately wanted, everyone is happy.

He should go.

We're not offering a reasonably competitive european football.
He absolutely needs to go for himself at this point. i wouldnt even hold any resentment towards him, we have completely and utterly failed to bring the calibre of the squad up to his standard.

He'll go, buyout clause inserted, he'll be off guaranteed, at least we've a full year post the summer debacle to decide who will replace him.

If he does leave then I think Butland could be a decent replacement.

I just want someone else to spend the money now, give Louis another two transfer windows and £150 m and you fear what we'll be left with, I could easily see him clearing out another 7-8 players given the chance, and replacing them with 2-3.

Yea haha we sold rafeal, vidic, Evans, evra, Nani, di Maria, Hernandez, RVP, give Rooney young and Valencia new contracts, signed fellaini and mata, binned our pace and not replaced the numbers, played blind at CB at all costs. The combination of Moyes and VG really has wrecked so much since 2013, it's been like a man of steel city fight, total destruction. These 2 managers along with the incompetent Woodward has sent us backwards. The 3 of them have been a tornado of destruction these past 2 years, clueless on all levels

oh you sweet naïve boy!!!

Because he'd massively increase his wages, had missed the opportunity to leave anyway, and signing the contract gets naïve people like you on side!

Im sorry, i'm clearly not as smart as you. My thought was that by signing a new contract he has only earned an extra few million which he surely could have got from Madrid as signing on fee, seeing as though him signing for free saves them at least 30 million they could offer him a huge amount. So money isn't the issue, he signed a contract for a different reason of which there could be many.

For a professional player is a risk to be with 1 year left without renewing. He could break the leg and finish like Valdés. He really only had two options , pay a very expensive insurance with his bad contract and keeping a bad atmosphere with fans or renew.

100% unfortunately, I want my Utd back:(.

Whatever makes him happy in life. He's deserved it after saving our asses so many times. And can't blame him for not wanting to waste more time with a team going nowhere.

Nope, couldn't blame him this time, sadly.
Hope he stays though. He'd be busier here, would get more of a game

I assume that there will have been some sort of clause in his contract that he can go to Madrid in the summer for a set price.

Very likely he will leave. He is too good to be playing here currently.

Although it sounds like you are on the WUM with that comment, I am inclined to agree. He's in absolutely top form and deserves to be challenging for league titles/CL.

I am not WUMing at all. He's far too good for this lot
He should be playing in an elite team and I cannot see any possible way United will be one in the next few years. In fact, I think there are a number of forces that suggest we will do similarly to Arsenal's last ten years in our next ten.

Given that you's can spend upwards of 200m a season, that would be terrible.

Some of the stuff on here is ridiculous. We are half way through a season, or where we'll be at the end of the season, we don't know when, if, who a new manager. I'd hate to see this place if we had a chelsea style implosion.

People still believe de Gea doesn't want to go to Real.

Probably the same people who think Pep to City isn't a done deal.

Agreed sadly.

I can see Dave gone and his two Spanish amigos leaving this summer too.

Very good points made there. Makes perfect sense for him to sign a new deal irrespective of whether he intends to honour it or not. This way, he protects his assets (i.e. himself) from any potentially career threatening injury. And the club protects their assets in getting best value for him if he leaves.

DDG will move to Madrid sooner or later and Madrid will always want the Spanish #1 over a Belgian.

United should use their heads with this one, we should use De Gea as leverage to get first refusal on a few Madrid players.

We all know he's going so hopefully the club is thinking about possible replacements as we speak. Butland would be my choice.

if they spend big money on courtois they won't spend big money on de gea, so could save us

At points in the past they have barely had a spanish player on the pitch, don't think it's that important
