Looking at the best, worst and likely outcomes of this season:

Best: 4th spot, FA cup winners.

Worst: 5th spot (I know 6th is mathmatically still possible but highly unlikely now), FA cup runners up

Likely: 5th spot and FA cup winners.

Looking at the season upon reflection you have to say that even the worst outcome is progress from when LVG took over. Maybe we're being a little harsh?

It doesn't make sense does it. Either he took it on a three year lease as he had a three year contract anyway. Or could he only get a two year lease, I doubt it. Could you imagine if he is stopping two extra years, until Giggs is ready. He could be here until he is 90.
Management is such a volatile job that I won't be surprised if he took a year on year lease.

The ticket office will be hoping season ticket sales pick up as they won't want to be processing 60,000 + ticket applications for every game.

After 2 years and spending £250m?

From 7th and UCL Qtrs to 5th and FA Cup winners is not a lot of progress.

The style of play has undoubtedly regressed. We might well win the FA cup but our terrible champions league showing, and yet again going out of the league cup with a whimper shows how we're treading water at best. We've spent a tonne of money, with nothing to show for it.

I know what you're saying but we have had the emergence of Leicester this season, Spurs have been superb in parts and the PL in general is more competitive from top to bottom.

Yes those teams knocked us out of the UCL didn't they.
They also occupy places above us in the league that put us in 5th?
Not to mention Spurs points tally is nothing special, add to that the dire football, lets not sugar coat what has been a very poor season.
we have scored 44 goals in 36 EPL games, and our top goalscorer has 9 goals, its the second season we have failed to have a player with 15+ league goals, its pathetic

I think pathetic is a little over zealous. It's not been a remarkable season without question but perhaps LVG is just ensuring we have the defensive mindset before adding that attacking flair...?

You'd be LVG's perfect example of a Man Utd fan, you know. Right level of expectation and all that.;)

2 seasons to learn how to play defence? No semblance of balance? 4th place is what we should aspire to (when he said the minimum we should be top 3 this season)? He is a world class manager indeed. He has succeeding in "managing" the expectations of the Glazers, board and a heck of a lot of people here too. Get gone please.

The thing is Loui keeps talking about this 3rd season, like its suddenly all going to click and the players will be playing magestic football. I can't see how It's going to get any better? They are playing how he wants them too. He was happy with the 1-0 win against Norwich, when many managers would rightly upset at that performance.

He's a statistics manager that only cares about caution and nicking wins. That's not the type of manager we need or want to take us on. If he's only staying 1 more year whatever happens he might aswell leave now.

1) You've got to remember that LVG purposely went into this season with a small squad, knowing we would get injuries so he could then give youth a chance. Some of which look pure class. That was genius.
2) If you'd have said we will finish above Chelsea and Liverpool and only 1 point behind city at the beginning of the season, we'd have all taken that.

1- A very tedious argument, the squad was clearly lacking in attack, he wanted to sign Bale, Muller, Lewa, Neymar please don't say he did this on purpose.
He gets credit for playing youth, but when the manager is saying Ashley Young is no Neymar then please don't act like it was his masterplan to leave us so light in attack
2- No, no one would have taken finish outside of the top 4 this season, no one

Yeah, it's genius to leave yourself with only 6 subs and no striker on the bench for must win games. It's great to give the youngsters a chance and then as soon as the quite awful Rojo is back he starts every game.

It only seems like progress because Moyes made such a mess of things in first place. There was no way the squad we had in 13/14 should have finished 7th, it should have been top four at the very worst. Even if you accept that Ferguson got the team to punch above it's weight the previous year, we had the league's best player on our books and a wealth of experienced internationals who had won titles before. What van Gaal did last season was return us what should be considered the bare minimum standard (ie. top four without a trophy) and all whilst getting rid of a bunch of players and spending significantly. For that reason, he was allowed to carry on in what should have been a continued upward trajectory.

This season we should have been challenging for the league, no question about it. You say the Premier League is more competitive, but the standard is lowest I can remember ever seeing (no disrespect meant to the worthy winners, Leicester). Our best teams, Arsenal's 03/04 side, City's best, Mourinho's first Chelsea team and probably that Liverpool team with Suarez would win the league this season without breaking a sweat, I'm confident of that. Instead, we're just about clinging on to top four and although we might win our first major trophy since Ferguson left, the style of play has been absolutely woeful the vast majority of the time and hasn't improved whatsoever since he first stepped through the door. In fact, it's gone backwards if anything in the second season. We're on course to finish with our worst total number of goals scored in the Premier League and it's not even close and we've been embarrassed in several games in domestic and European competition (MK Dons, 'Boro, Champions League group stage, Midtjylland etc.). It's not good enough for a club of our size and stature and he has to go this summer.

Also you've got to remember that our CEO, Ed Woodward has come out and said that LVG is doing fantastic work in the background and is analysing every detail, even the size of the fences at Carrington. He'll probably never get the credit for the success the next manager brings because of the foundations that he's laid over these last 2 and probably 3 seasons.

There we go again with that bs about foundations

Even if he was, and I don't agree that he has, his team in the here and now has massively underperformed under his tutelage

To be fair I didn't know about the fences. That's excellent work and probably going to lead to global domination. I just hope other clubs don't twig on to this.

He's laying the foundations for people to start slipping into coma's during our matches.

I can't see why any of the attacking players we need would want to come and play in his system.

He hasn't laid fecking shit over two years.

I'm starting to believe that he's the devil or something other, he's mindcontrolling people, deceived them like a demon. I need to visit the devils and lightbulbs thread.

It's all about the detail with LVG.

We could be in a really strong position come next season with LVG at the helm, we will have a top PL manager with a good 2 seasons of steady, not ground breaking but steady progress behind him where as City, Chelsea and Liverpool will all be under new management trying to find their way in a tough league.

You've got to look at the season as a whole, if we finish 5th and win the FA cup this season, personally I wouldn't be suprised to see us go and win the Europa next season under LVG.

You base that on what? Not being able to advance from piss easy CL group or getting trashed by Liverpool in EL?

it's been shit mate - stop it you're not thinking clearly. we've been a horror show. boring. nothingness. he's a shit manager that has lowered expectations to the point that you , one of the very few , think those was a good season. did you watch any matches?

We were unlucky in the CL group stage this season, the Like Shaw injury made it very difficult. Plus Liverpool won't be in it next season.

So it was due to our LB's injury that we couldn't advance from it? If all of our hopes are laid in Shaw's performance then surely our manager is useless? (which he is)

If not Liverpool then it's any other half decent team that will play us out.

To make myself clear: there was/is nothing that would suggest that we have a shot at any European competition next year with LVG at helm. We've been woefully shit in CL and then we transferred that horrendous form to EL.

No I think the away goal rule will really help us as we rarely concede plus I've heard that there maybe some extra points for teams with the highest possession?

It's great how people come up with stuff like this.
