“Playing in the Champions League is very important for players,” conceded Van Gaal. “But I also think that Manchester United are big enough to attract top players. Of course qualifying for the Champions League would help me when I am speaking to players in the summer. It always helps.

“But I want to stress that Manchester United are such a big club, and our salaries are so good here, that a lot of players will come here even if we don’t qualify for the Champions League.”

From a “done dealio” perspective, how is this to be explained? Is Louis completely in the dark? Or is he just talking bollocks for no apparent reason?

The smoke screen/diversion explanation is far too outlandish for me. He doesn't have to sit there and pretend that he'll be around next season whilst knowing bloody well it's not the case – it would be undignified, silly and completely unnecessary.

Something similar applies to Fergie's latest comment too – if you ask me. I don't think he'd be interested in playacting either, which is what detailed comments about the situation amounts to for someone who knows LVG is a goner. A generic, pointless remark or two would've sufficed.

To be clear, I'm not saying this means I – personally – believe LVG sits safely in his chair until the contract expires. But on the face of it, it would appear as though neither Fergie nor LVG (certainly not the latter) are privy to whatever deal is in place.

If LVG is still manager, this board and the owners no longer care about competing for trophies. It's about securing 4th place for a steady stream of revenue.

Moyes was all over the gaff like Phileas Fogg scouting players and lubing agents just before the axe fell on him.

@Scorpy
This is true, but sickening that's it's got to a stage where our manager is having to make such apologies/justification for his awful performance.

I see some of the papers are running with a story that if we don't get CL next season then the players will get a reduction in their pay.

I'd be proper pissed if the incompetence of my managers leadership financially impacted on me.

It's certainly true for Depay, whose contract details were leaked a few days back.

http://docdro.id/TlugkRa

Depay’s basic wage at Man United is £5.2m from July 2015 until June 2016. Thereafter, until the end of the contract in June 2019, the Dutch star will receive £3.9m in wages each year.

Memphis was also entitled to a bonus payments.

Should Man United play Champions League football in any of the next three seasons, Memphis’ basic wage will increase by £1.3m in each an every year they are in the competition.

Man United also agree to a one-off loyalty payment of £500,000 provide Memphis is still at the club in September 2018

As to appearance fees, Depay earns £20,000 for every start, and £10,000 for every substitute appearance.

Staying with appearances, Man United owe Depay £250,000 after he makes 20 starting appearances in any season under his contract, while another £250,000 is owing if Memphis starts 40 games in a season.

Ballon d’Or provisions were also included in the contract. Memphis will earn £1m if he wins the Ballon d’Or at Man United, £500,000 if he comes in the top three, and £100,000 for every nomination.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is true for most players. I guess that is why the club doesn't care about being out of CL every odd season. The cost of missing out on the CL is somewhat offset by a reduced wage bill and the Adidas sponsorship is only affected if we are out of the CL for two consecutive seasons.

I would have to go through the annual financial report for 2014-2015 again; but did the wage bill in 2014-2015 reduce from the previous year?

This has just hit me. We've scored 39 goals this season. 39! Good good, that's shambolic.

We've conceded only 27 as well. :nono::nono: 2 more than Spurs which is the best in the league.

Having said that, it is not an excuse. Going forward we have been dire and dismal to watch!

I agree. LVG's arrogance throughout the whole situation has been very worrying. He is no idiot and his comments are setting him up to look an absolute plonker if he is deservedly sacked.

The whole situation is utterly shambolic. It's almost as if United are deliberately doing the exact opposite of what every other club would do. It's the case study outlining the the counter argument to "the manager needs to be given more time".

Moyes was all over the gaff like Phileas Fogg scouting players and lubing agents just before the axe fell on him.

People keep using this as a comparison as to why the two situations are the same, but they're completely different. That was Moyes' own time and had no impact on the team for the following season. LVG and the club, are actually putting plans in place for next season based on what LVG wants. I'm pretty sure LVG being here was part if the reason Chong decided to sign for us.

Let's not forget that managers make millions. And they also make lots of side money, like an interview, a photo opportunity, an ad, and so on. So, they will play the part as long as they can. Even if Jose has signed a contract for the summer, LVG is the manager *now* and he will act the part while he is not officially fired. All the managers do the same, we are not an exception.

Didn't he just say a few days ago that him staying was dependant on a top 4 finish and possibly a trophie?

More evidence on how LVG has driven the fun and belief out of Old Trafford

In case you werent aware (I mentioned it in another thread), unless we score 16 goals in the next two games Moyes will have managed a higher tally in his 33 league games in charge, than this current league season.

I dreamt we lost 5-0 to Norwich and woke up livid with LvG (till I realised it was a dream). He's ruining my dreams too!

It seems clear that LVG will be here if he gets 4th. Not sure can bear the thought of another year of this sh*t on a stick football.

Never mind the club being 'desperate to keep van Gaal', Leicester's (deserved) success absolutely shames our manager. F*cking disgraceful.

It's just absolutely ridiculous he's being paid millions to make changes like this.

Looking back to the WC, Krul winning that shoot-out after being subbed on was disastrous for us, LVG has tried to make batshit subs to show his genius ever since.

Well, at least the job should be Jose's soon.

Surely got a lot of responsibility for this game. His changes have been dreadful and, if anything, have resulted in Spurs gaining the upper hand.
