I think we are left with a choice of LVG or Giggs for the rest of the season so it would be preferable that he doesn't get sacked

The media is really against him...even Schmeichel can't stop bitching

More headlines. Will it never end with this man :(

Some of the post match comments floating about from him allegedly are really funny.

Acting very defiant after beating a struggling Derby.

I darent even look, are we on for the fa cup AND premier league now, I despise the moron!

He's pretty great at getting the results he needs to keep his job. Still, it does show that the players still like him.

Can't see him criticising the press for that in his next conference. :D

How ridiculous is football? It seems to be accepted that a win earns the manager an extra few weeks as if the only deciding factor on a manager's future is the previous game.

It was a good performance and United deserved to win. Is it a sign of future success? Is LVG now suddenly the best man for the job? Of course not.

The decision on his future should be based on his entire tenure and United is not a good team. Is it acceptable to sack him after a win? Of course it is. The only deciding factor should be when a better manager is available.

You'd think so wouldn't you, but alas Louis is king again, and all that has gone before has been forgotten .... again!

I've said it before all he needs to do is chuck in a decent/attacking performance every 4-5 games and then revert to the usual crap, it seems to work every time for him.

Stuck with him for another while. Ed will use any decent result as an excuse not to act. The fact that 18 months in he's clearly not the right man for the job is irrelevant sadly

This happened with Moyes, any win meant we'd turned the corner, the confidence was back and he was going to get it right now. Kept buying himself a few more games until there was nothing left to play for in the season.

Things aren't this simplistic though. I'm confident that it's universally accepted that LVG isn't our long term solution, nor has he performed to the standards that we expected when he was appointed.

Nor is it as simple as saying "when a better manager is available", as this is not necessarily the same thing as "the best man for the job".

It seems blindingly obvious to me that we don't want Mourinho, at least not right now, and whilst I can see the attraction in getting him in to rescue this season, I really wouldn't want him at United for the next 2/3 years. Not because of the misconceptions about his style but just because he's a dick.

So, if it's a case of potentially writing this season off to properly source the "right man" then I'll go with it. I have huge concerns that we don't know who the right person is, and bigger concerns that it's more than just the manager that needs reviewing, but I can see why LVG is still there. For now, at least, whilst 4th still remains a 'realistic' possibility (subject to us actually winning some games).

I gave up. For the fact that Ed Woodward sent him a bottle of wine after 8 winless games and one lucky win against Liverpool (Swansea and
Sheffield United too), he's not gonna get sacked no matter what.

If the board does not see that we have been outplayed in most of our games this season then they are just fat cats in a suit.
We'll that's a lie. We haven't been outplayed much, we just haven't created handed or scored goals - that has been the problem.
The games we have been outplayed, we have usually won - Liverpool 2 weeks ago.

Derby win means nothing, every Premier League team should be beating them without problem let alone United. It's like after Swansea win, they were the worst side in the league bar Villa when we played them yet a lucky 2-1 win basically meant he got another 10 games.

We've got three really tough games coming up now - Stoke H , Chelsea A, Sunderland A, what's the betting we have a stinker against these three and pick up 1-2 points, the pressure on Louis cranks up to new levels, but then we go and tonk Midtjylland in a 'wonderful' attacking display and all will be well again.

The "extravagant wine" story bothers me more than it probably should. It just makes them seem a little too cozy and buddy-buddy with each other for my liking. Might be a weird thing to be annoyed about, but it just seems like EdWood might not find it so easy to turn around and sack him if and when the penny finally drops.

I think that's fair enough. I remember hearing a president of an Aussie Rules club say he doesn't want to be to close and matey with the coach of his club because one day he might just have to sack him.

Woodward is determined not to sack LVG .So regardless of what happens he will see out his contract.

He could be looking at it from another angle.
We won away from home in the cup where the lower division teams are always up for it and looking for a name scalp.
I dont think we turned a corner but at least we won and didnt draw.

Aye, shall bolster our morales in the march for avoiding relegation.

From what I've seen today, the plucky win last night means that Van Gaal has turned a corner and the players have their confidence back.....I'd say this win gives him at least a few more weeks of immunity from all other results. I'm not sure I recall a farce like this at a top club before where mediocrity is celebrated and incompetence is excused so often.

Last night a lot of our hopes seemed to be on Martial beating his man one-on-one to break them down, otherwise it would have been another dull night. Varela looked to overlap on the right as well in fairness, but essentially, the real sparks came from Martial beating his man.

Makes you wonder, if we had another top quality player on the right who could beat his man at will, does that change things? If you have Robben and Ribery on either wing then LvG can look good. Or if he has Memphis and Lingard/Mata on the wings, he looks clueless.

To an extent, this is true.

For an effective high-quality possession team, the squad is currently missing:
Wingers who can beat a man from standstill
A pass master who also has a bit of agilty and quick feet to side step a challenge (after all Xavi and Scholes didn't just pass the very second they got the ball)
A number 10 (or someone central who can sit on the ball, and almost play as a half-winger through the centre)
A number 9 who not only scores loads of goals, but has quick feet and can turn situations where he receives the ball with his back to goal into goals consistently.

Essentially, van Gaal is trying to force possession football upon a squad that lacks what's needed. Hence they pass the ball about aimlessly and have zero threat.

There's really not much left to do beside just keep supporting the team and go match-by-match. Seems like Woody has no interest in getting Jose nor Pep (unless both or one of them are really up for taking a year long break) and LVG is apparently set to run his contract in full extent.

I'm not even really that arsed about our transfers as I simply can't see LVG giving us the football style or results we desire.

Right now, it's just about supporting the team, hoping for the best and living day by day.

It's easy to get carried away after a 3-1 victory over a Derby team that hasn't won all month and with two offside goals, but normal service will be resumed next week.

LVG out.
