Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

I'd rather we signed Shaw than any other left back but I can't honestly say we're known for nurturing any kind of youth nowadays. We generally let other teams nurture them and we sign them when they're ready for a step up.

Look at Powell, Zaha, Rossi, Pique, Pogba and countless other youth players we loan out or sell every year. In all honesty, Shaw would get much more benefit from joining Arsenal.

I'm not surprised some of England's best young players turn us down anymore (such as Ramsey & Bale) they will get more playing time elsewhere. I seriously hope Van Gaal sorts this out and plays kids that fit his system. We will continue to lose out if not.

De Gea has been first choice since he was 19. Rafael has been first choice for the last 3 years and been an important part of the first team since he was 19. Welbeck has been an important first team player since he was 21. Januzaj was an important first team player this past season and he was 18. Jones has been an important first team player since he was 19 and came to the club from Blackburn.

We lost out on both over half a decade ago. Since then, once we have made a move for a British youngster, we have got him.

Who are the other options then? We don't even know if the club is looking at Rodriguez.

I don't like the transfer fee but football is going only one way - spend to win.

Rodriquez would be the second one. Alba went for 14 millions to Barcelona as an already proven first team EC winning player for Spain. He was 23, mind, but above 30 millions for a LB who isn't proven at the highest level(CL/EC/WC) is stupid.

I can see the purpose of paying above 30 millions if he has a brilliant world-cup keeping the top players in the world silent consistently. That is the type of value 30-35 millions is for a full-back, 35 million was Alves going to Barcelona and he was already established as the best right back in the world. Had won two consecutive Uefa Cups and was a first team starter for Brazil.

Luke Shaw really has quite some steps to make, every single one of them is a clear risk factor as there is no certainty a player will take that step successfully.

He is a LB who has performed well in the EPL, so who has he been up to this season in terms of RW's as there hardly are any top class ones in the EPL? Navas got the best of him, against the top sides Luke handled Henderson/Milner/Gnabry well, Januzaj/Nani created a lot being up against him. How would he handle the step up from Navas/Januzaj/Nani to Robben/Bale?

He has a passing percentage of 70-75~% against the top clubs.

I mean if we want to try and justify that paying above 30 million is alright for him, then he really has to be near flawless like most full-backs going for those prices. I really like Shaw, but he isn't a 30-35 million quid player.

For me 27 millions is United making a no-nonsense bid above his value to get business done early. Seems like the typical "We're doing business with United-reaction" from Southhampton in my eyes, thinking they can squeeze another couple of millions out of us.

United often seem to enter these sort of long-negotiations where the other club is bullying up the price because they know we got money.

Other clubs seems to have a better leverage than us, the other club rarely seems to hold them ransom for a 2 month negotiation which ends in the big club overpaying by a lot.

More than one since then - assuming you are talking about Jones there is also Zaha and Smalling unless not considered youngsters for the age they were acquired.

Could have phrased that a lot better . Meant to say that once we make a move for a British youngster, we usually get them. Bale and Ramsey were exceptions to the rule and they were more than half a decade ago.

Home grown players in last season's squad:

Amos, Benjamin Paul (Yes)
Carrick, Michael (Yes)
Cleverley, Thomas William (Yes)
Evans, Jonathan Grant (Yes)
Ferdinand, Rio Gavin (Yes)
Giggs, Ryan Joseph (Yes)
Smalling, Christopher (Yes)
Rooney, Wayne Mark (Yes)
Welbeck, Daniel (Yes)
Young, Ashley Simon (Yes)
Pereira da Silva, Rafael (Yes)
Pereira da Silva, Fabio (Yes)
Fletcher, Darren Barr (Yes)

Ones in red have gone, the two in black are near certainties to leave (though Johnstone would probably replace Amos as homegrown keeper), and several of the others some would like to leave. The likes of Januzaj and probably Wilson and Lawrence may come up, but I think Shaw would be a great signing both in terms of potential and filling a homegrown slot for years to come.

And with Greg Dyke going on about youth getting lack of game time, who knows if the homegrown requirement will stay at 8 or rise in the next few years?

I don't understand middle Names, all those names just seem stupid now. Even seeing Jonny Evans as Jonathan Evans seems stupid.

Maybe not recently but there is a previous track record of buying young talented players and making them stars. Plus as one poster alluded to, van Gaal is known for helping to develop young players so I could definitely see Shaw improving a ton under him.

How middle class does "Thomas WIlliam Cleverley" sound?

Very. Although I was thinking that with my post I just managed to insult everyone with a middle name, which wasn't my intention. I've just never understood them.

Bot, Damien Motorola going all scouser on us here

I can only agree with this, ideally money should never matter to us fans when judging a player but it does. If Shaw is signed for these 30 something million pound fee then honestly I hope he'll be worth them cause the club would have clearly overpaid for him.

I agree with this, makes you question the clubs actions in the market and it also puts all this pressure on the lad because of his transfer fee. As if it's not enough having to fill Evras boots

Very. So the next time someone is about to criticize him, you'd hope they'd have the sense to try and place themselves in the football shoes of a middle class person, for a change, before they do.

As for Shaw, this is all taking its sweet time, as per. I would have hoped we would wrap this one up nice and quickly. We have other areas of the squad to focus on as well, and I'm not convinced by Woody's multitasking capabilities.

Why does it take so long to make another bid? Genuine question. Surely we were prepared for them to reject our initial offer, so what would logically cause delays between bids? Same thing seemed to happen last summer too where weeks seemed to go by between bids.

I think it's Southampton. They simply stall for other clubs to join in but if there shall be no other serious efforts, they'll be happy what they already got from us.

So far we're showing a real interest and it's definitely a pole position attitude.

SSN and the Guardian, both of 'United very close to Thiago signing' fame. "Safely."
I have no bigger doubts that we actually want this player and so far there's no bigger interest from other clubs. However if what you're saying will come true then Woodward is close to finished.

Supporters will tear him apart unless we have some other option far from media's attention.

Bottom line is that Southampton have no real incentive to rush to complete a deal and they know they can string us along.

If Shaw plays at the world cup and impresses his value will increase and it may peak other club's interest. So it's going to take one hell of an offer to persuade them to sell him now.

Hate to do this again but do you realise what happened there? Our manager decided he wasn't cut out for the premier league.

Didn't Sky say they've accepted a bid from us for £27 million? All he has to do is sign now. It's no longer in Southampton's hands.

Sky Sports started the whole thing and Guardian suspecting Southampton to receive another bid. 30 millions this time.

We can safely say, it's in motion.
so the current thinking is that if we did 27million pound it has been regected? not a good sign can't see us going to much higher then that

im still not 100% convinced we bid, sky sports are always getting things wrong, may simply have been an enqurey that got blown out of proportion.

but what ever the situation dosn't look promisng it will be done before the world cup.

We have bid. Believe me. In fact, the bid has been on the table since January.

Shaw will sign for Utd.

do we need him ? what if we play 3-5-2
Nowadays you can't really get away without wing backs with that sort of system, and the likes of Rafael and Shaw would be fantastic wing backs.

It wasn't just sky sports, we definitely made the bid. Unclear as of yet whether it's been accepted or rejected but the silence on the matter is probably promising.

any sources, proof, evidence? becos no offense but the amount of times ive read on one united forum or another "believe me" "this player will be a united player" and it doesn't happen.

personly i think thier is a good probablity it may happen, but probably not will mid late august, as it dosn't look like it is going to happen before the world cup, so then if you take into account players holidays, possibly a new manager been in place at Southampton wanting to asses his squad, and see which stars he can get away with selling, then possibly further negotations on fee, wages. but we arn't the speediest at getting deals done.

it just that they all now seem to have gone deadly silent on the subject, which normally means they an't sure if what they reported was correct and so dont want to repeat it to much incase they look stupid.

and lots of bids, go quiete and then it turns ut it has been rejected, look at fabregas last summer, we bid then didnt hear nothing concrete for weeks, when it turned out it had been rejected ages ago.

You're confusing the delay in us hearing stuff with whats actually happening. The truth is Southampton could have had a bid of £30 million on the table for a day or two by now, have accepted it, and the deal is being finalised. The media is largely in the dark I would suggest.

IF it had been rejected the press would have been all over it.
