Thought he started brightly and actually looked to get forward at every opportunity. Not sure what happened in the 2nd half but he reverted back to his recent self, turning backwards as soon as he receives the ball, not supporting the attack etc.

Adama happened in the second half.

Teams realising he’s the weak link. Really think we should have taken the punt on Tierny for £25m. If Shaw continues like this we’d be back to Young as left back.

He must have genetically one of the worst VO2max in the squad. His baseline stamina is piss poor and as studies show even the most intense training can give you a boost 20% above your genetic baseline and Shaw doesn’t seem able to maintain it for long periods in the season. Doesn’t help that he’s come back, once again, carrying extra weight.

This draw is 100% on him. He flat lined after the 60th minute and gave Wolves all sort of will power down the left side

Backwards, sideways and then backwards again. Plays without any balls whatsoever.

Lingard was Piss poor, so was James's final ball. McT was poor and cumbersome with his passing and positioning. But yeah, Shaw is the reason we drew against Wolves. This place, sometimes!

Adama, when he came, was a major threat one on one. As a result, Luke struggled to cope with it in the 2nd half. But, as a whole, he was good with and without the ball, better than most.

To defeat low block, compact teams, the best template is that of City. Quick tempo, movements, quick ball circulation, sharp and penetrative passing is the best way to go. Unfortunately, we do not have the right personnel for it. This was the best game to give a chance to Gomes but he does not seem to be in Ole's mind as an option. Mata was surprisingly poor in the few minutes he was given, this was his type of game.

Gotta say I think he's getting away with it a bit at the moment, I don't see much to his game that suggests he should be our long term left back. Offers little going forward and prone to being out of position for counter attacks.

How many times he elected to play the ball back to Maguire last night cause he didn't have the balls to carry the ball was beyond me.

I just think the injury and his fitness issues have damaged a very good footballer, whether its confidence or just not having the legs now I don't think he's the player he was supposed to be and I suspect he's way down the pecking order England as well.

The only fullback I've seen that thinks blocking crosses isnt his job. He always looks to me as someone who is tired after 50 min. He is never in position to track his player, not attacking nor defending. Teams know he isnt good and will have a field day up their right wing. Dalot will get more games than I thought this season.

Honestly, the more I think about it and the more I realize there was no way to stop Traore last night because what he was doing was outpacing Shaw and hitting it hard. I cannot blame Shaw for not being to keep up pace wise with a 100m sprinter

I don't know why we go on the back foot in that scenario. Shaw was one of our bigger threats, and we shat our pants when Traore came on and even Rashford started backing off.

Teams like City and Liverpool would just double down and ignore the threat, and back themselves to be more likely to score in that scenario. But we decided to back off and pay Wolves too much respect.

Far from our most urgent problem to fix. With a better midfield he will have the confidence to offer more attacking wise.

It's not confidence that is the issue in my opinion. I genuinely don't think he is good enough going forward with regards to crossing the ball or incisive passes. Great run for the goal last night but he needs to offer much more on the ball.

Exactly, the criticism is ridiculous. They brought a 100m sprinter on purely to tire him out and stop us attacking down the left. Shaw had to sit back because he knew there's no way he could catch him if he gets past and after a few sprints like that he started to struggle, he'd already played 45 minutes after all. No left back in the world, actually no footballer in the world, is keeping up with Traore. Judge Shaw on the first 45 minutes.

Good post.

We gave him too much respect. Shaw could have attacked him first each without giving any time but I guess he was afraid to get skinned

For those suggesting Shaw struggled with the pace of Traore and that it's basically impossible to defend against.

Jonny did pretty well in stopping our pocket rocket in James, they can be defended against easily with positioning.

Looks like Shaw gets to fill Young’s position as ‘player as well as Lingard that we must vilify whatever he does’

I’m glad matchday fans are more supportive than the folks on here.

He is far from the teams issue atm, that honor lies with the midfield. And in this case we should be blaming the manager/boardroom for not sorting that shit out in the summer. But no, Lingard/Mata etc will get ripped to shreds as if it’s there fault.

And this is coming from somebody who thinks Lingard is an utter twat!!!!!!!

One notable contribution in 90 minutes? Wow, great contribution.

Then use your eyes and understand the game better. Shaw overlapped when he could but most of the time Rashford tucked in narrow rather than offer him an option forward. If he'd run into a defender marking him goalside 1 on 1 and lost the ball you agenda driven pricks would be castigating him too. Instead he makes the sensible option in many of these situations and keeps possession.

He was up against a physically faster and stronger player in the 2nd half in Adama. He couldn’t play the same game after that.

The rest of your post is subjective. I thought he looked trimmer than ever and was making good runs first half to support the attack

The only thing those 2 players have in common is pure pace. Adama is built like a linebacker whereas James is built like a kid with pace. They were just knocking him off the ball physically every chance they got.

It's mental! It's like the lack of Smalling/Jones/Young has got people confused about what defender to pick on. Our defence is so much better now, yet still they're nitpicking on a player that isn't even playing badly.

I would say he's our weakest defender, but that's because the rest of our defence is so damn good now. If the rest of our team was perfect then maybe we'd focus on alternatives to Shaw, but for now we have much bigger issues.

I think it all comes down from the mentality of the club and management. We're a defense first team. We believe that keep the backline solid, and the attack will take care of itself.

Liverpool and City defend from the front, they believe if they attack well the opposition will be too afraid to go at their backline.

How many assists do Henderson; Fabinho and Milner have. The answer is in why Shaw ruins our attacks.

Well if the idea is to play like Liverpool with our full backs providing all of our creativity, does that make our manager a complete idiot for spending 50m on a RB like AWB?

So are you telling me AWB can’t attack? Do you watch football or just read other people’s comments?

He's no Trent Alexander Arnold or Andy Robertson. Let's see how many assists AWB pulls off this season.

Would like to see him take on defenders more often. Seems like everytime anybody gets close to him, he stops and looks for a simple pass.

Yeah he's far too predictable in that regard. He gets the ball, runs forward a bit untill someone gets close, stops and passes it sideways. I like his runs further up the pitch but he needs to offer more in the build-up.

1. Traore was brought on at half time, after Shaw had already played 45 minutes.
2. James is very, very quick, but Traore might be the fastest player in world football. He's also built like a tank.
3. Jonny did nothing of note offensively either, and was no better than Shaw defensively.

I'm sure swearing online makes you feel really macho and all manly.

I'll keep discussing this with people who actually can form an opinion without disrespecting others, good day kind sir! *tips hat*

Shaw can't cross at all. It's that simple. Other than that he's really good. As a full back obviously that's s limiting factor but it is what it is and his runs into the box make up for it to a large extent. Talk of him not being good enough is a huge over-reaction. A couple of years ago I might have agreed but not now.

I thought those 90mins perfectly highlighted why Luke Shaw needs to be replaced and demoted to a squad player next summer.

Offensively he didn't offer a single thing. His corners (I have no idea why he's taking them, that's on Ole) were pointless. Defensively, he was led a merry dance by a kick-and-run speed merchant, Traore, who pretty much murked him for 45mins.

I've said many times before, at his best Luke Shaw is a 7/10 player, reliable but completely forgettable. Compare him to Irwin, Evra and even Heinze and ask yourself "is this good enough for Man Utd's full-time LB"?

Not for me, not if we have ambition.

Upgrade needed in the summer window.

He did well because James wasn't doing what Traore was doing for most of the game. Traore was attacking with intent - punting it past Shaw and then sprinting. There's no shame in struggling to keep up with the fastest player in the league when you've played a 45 and he's just came onto the pitch.

There was nothing wrong with Shaw last night ffs, he's become one of the new scapegoats it seems. He was completely comfortable in the first 45 and was great going forward. Your goal wouldn't have happened without him.

A section of the fans desperately want someone to blame and it seems now that Young and "the chuckle brothers" are not playing, they re looking for new scapegoats. It seems that Lingard and Shaw top their list at the moment.
What a sad lot.
