He didn’t look any different than usual?

Why do people bring this up every time he plays? Yes he’s got a big ass and wide hips but it doesn’t mean he’s fat FFS
The fact that he is fat means that he is fat.

I wonder if he has a metabolism problem like what Goetze had, it is quite worrying to see how much weight he's put on in such a short space of time.

Does anyone have a pic of Shaw? I'm inclined to think the Caf is armchair'ing on this issue, but seems there is something to this uproar.
This is all i could find:

Does Luke Shaw really want it... that's the question?? He looks overweight, doesn't run to burst a lung and isn't tough enoj going into any tackle... he just looks like a player who isn't 100% in it. 2 managers have questioned his work effort now.

We need to bring in Sandro and he can battle it with him. Young is great, but he isn't left footed and that was an exposed problem tonight... he needs to check back and his instinctive left footed crosses isn't on a high enough level to consistently cause the opposition problems.

He looks fine there
He looks normal indeed but we've seen him in better shape. A casual who doesn't follow United like my dad, was very surprised to see a player in such state for Man United. He said "what in the oblivion is that??"

I was disappointed with his cameo. Made a lot of silly errors in giving the ball away when all he had to do was to pass the ball a teammate infield. Whether that has to do with the fact that Jose was glaring at him, I really don't know.

Agree with everyone regarding his weight. He definitely looks a lot chunkier than he did early on in the season.

If it wasn't just a trick of the light, I think it's more concern about attitude, which is a justifiable concern considering it's been questioned before.
I honestly don't see it. Still, these concerns were voiced the last time he wasn't playing and were quickly forgotten about when he was given a run of games and did well. I'm more concerned by the fact that Ashley Young remains an almost undisputed starter in this team.

He isnt fat, havent seen any difference since his last appearance. He didnt get fat in a few weeks. He also wouldnt be on the bench

He's not fat. But he's definitely heavier than a young Premier League footballer should be. He should be far leaner. Was watching tonight with 2 others and the three of us noticed the moment we saw him tonight that he looked heavier. It's a worry. If he hasn't the drive to stay in absolutely peak condition, then it brings his attitude into question.

Same. If he's out of shape because he stopped trying or something after he was dropped for Young that's shitty professionalism, but when he was dropped there was no reason for it.

Both of those can be true and I do think it's more concerning he went back to Young, especially after that embarrassment against Tottenham.

That match demonstrated how much of a massive liability Young is in possession, especially away from home against top oppostion (same could also be leveled at Valencia tbf). Shaw should have come back into the team then IMO.

If Jose doesn't rate Shaw, fair enough, we just need to move on this summer. I feel Shaw has both let himself down at times and had bad luck.

Jesus Christ, people are blaming Jose for Shaw putting on timber?

There is no excuse for an elite level athlete to look like Shaw did tonight. Of course he wasn't fat but in no way did he look in peak physical shape.

It's been a recurring issue with him since he got here, 3 different managers have criticised his weight and fitness and he's still letting it happen.

If you're one of 10 outfield players picked in a game your team dominates about you offer no meaningful contribution then you've done terribly. Football is a proactive game, you actually have to do things. Shaw did nothing all game, Rojo was a bigger threat down the left than Shaw today. The only player who can get away with being completely innocuous today is De Gea because the ball didn't go near him.

When a fullback isn't being asked to defend then it isn't enough to just sit in line with the centerbacks and do nothing, he should have been standing on the touchline 20 yards further forward and stretching play.

Exactly the same as last time.

If Manchester United or any professional football club offered to pay me 50-500 grand a week to train 5 times a week, I’d be in peak condition at all times. It’s beyond excusable that he loses fitness so easily with the facilities, coaches and ease of life he lives.

You know what the most annoying thing about Shaw's time here is?

He's never really played himself out of favour because 1) he's not got a run of game 2) he's dropped instantly anyways ffs.

I'd have a bulky Shaw as left back any day over Ashley 'does a lot but not really' Young.

I don't see the problem with Mourinho had tohand on instruct Shaw this game. I meant we know Shaw still has a lot to learn tactically. Even in that interview where Mourinho gave him high praise, he did mention about the tactic part. When Shaw was brought on. Our formation and tactic became very unconventional and a bit complex. Shaw and Lingard looked like playing wing back with 3 CBs (Matic got back) in some phase, but in another phase Matic stepped out of CB position and only 2 CBs while Lingard is not a real RB bombing forward. I see the need to make sure Shaw doesn't make mistake. Instinctively he would do LB/ LWB job bombing forward. However in this case, to have Matic step up back into midfield, it left us thinner than normal at the back. I don't expect Shaw to be experienced enough to handle this on himself, so shouldn't be anything outrageous to have instruction shouting his way.

It's clear to see why Young has been being picked again.
Shaw looks the fattest I've seen him. The boob jiggle on him is pretty funny.

I was shocked today seeing how fat he is. Maybe he does just have a huge ass and wide bones or something that makes him look fat? Surely he can't really be that fat? Looks likes he's on a couple of cold ones + double cheeseburger x 3 times a day diet.

Err... did you miss my whole point being the fact he was given a run in the team whilst Young with his red card, was very good for us, and then instantly benched? You're an agenda poster, every semi positive post about Shaw you've replied with snide remarks. If you can't see that he's actually a technically talented fullback then there's nothing to discuss here.

I'm not denying his ability, I haven't done that once, I'm saying he's grossly overrated (he is), a shite 'professional' and that he's been a flop for us. Your implication is that he won't push it for us if we don't give him a chance, it's an idiotic one because it should be him pushing it first to earn his spot, not the other way around. At the moment we're having the same discussion about Shaw we've had four years ago when LVG said he isn't fit enough. It's mind boggling.

 you guys are so harsh, but genuinely funny banter. I thought he was okay, not encouraging to see Mourinho barking at him alot on the touch line though. I hope the extra size can give him an edge as bulking up is always a must in the PL when you play in a combative position.

I felt the decision to bring on Shaw wasn't justified last night considering how little he contributed offensively and defensively. He looked lost.

I think the lad is similar to rooney where they need a run of games. However, that isn't an excuse for not turning up when the team needs you. Sadly, i don't see how this issue is going to resolve it self since Mourinho doesn't really trust him.

The problem for him is you can see how much he needs to be told where to go and where to stand even when the ball is on the opposite flank. I could understand once or twice but it seemed like every time we had the ball Jose was telling him where to be.

At first i thought it was the grey kit but he just looked so chunky last night. The other issue was he didnt do much. Sure he was in a good run of form, got praised then was dropped for a guy who got himself suspended, but thats no excuse for why Shaw looked the way he did. It wasnt even that he looked chunky, he played like he had extra weight. He seemed to struggle at times which is disappointing. Its very Anderson-like.

I didn't think he was that bad. Didn't do a lot (wrong or well), but even then, it wasn't deserving of the criticism he's getting in here (although, most of it isn't actually to do with his performance). I still prefer him to Young. Also doesn't look much different to he has in the past.

Some of you lot really need to have a word. Lad was recently tested as the second fittest player in the squad after Valencia. But yeah he's fat and lazy, Caf experts....

Just for arguments sake, is their really much difference here?

He’s pretty much always looked fat since he put on muscle. He wouldn’t be near the team if he was in the condition that people are implying.

How many times are we going to have this debate about his weight? As somebody else said, he's recently tested as joint fittest player in the squad.

It's not often you get a full back that is quick and built like a tank. He always been this way and you can see the advantage it brings when he's battling 1 on 1. It's an advantage imo and if he kicks on he could be a beast.

I thought he was good last night too. Calm and composed on the ball but was winning a lot of Palaces high balls and actually heading to his team mates. He was miles better than Young.

I'd rather an overweight Shaw start for us. He gives us the natural width we are desperate for.

That Roberto Carlos wasn't exactly slim was he?;)

Point is, full backs can be all sorts of shapes and sizes. Defending first and foremost is what any team should be looking at. He's developed really well in this regard

Only works if the central players look to pass. Last night, Young was ignored by Sanchez et al on numerous occasions.

When Rashford came on and Jess moved wide right, we exposed Palace wide.

Problem is that we need another good RB to step into Valencia's shoes
