He'll start vs Hull I think. Needs to sort out his positioning even tho he has the pace to catch up.

Knew this'd happen when putting him straight in starting lineup. Should give players returning from long term injuries time in the U23s to build fitness.

Sure he had a bad game but on the flipside that game will have done his fitness absolute wonders as its a much higher intensity than u23 games, he's been thrown in the deep end but he has come out unscathed despite not exactly having a good game, it is a good platform to work from.

All things considered, thought is was a good 90 minutes. Onwards and upwards.

I'm not worried about his footballing ability, it's his mentality and physical conditioning that worries me. Thankfully they are the things you can improve immensely.

Agreed, much like Martial he started nervily but grew into the game, some of his passes in the channel were really good, he needs to start against Hull to build some confidence, it's not like Blind or Darmian have been pulling up trees at LB.

after a long time out he was decent or certainly didnt look out of place or that unfit, which would be inderstandable.. good interceptions and going forward, finding decent passes, could do with better crossing, but that was never that good from him, solid defensively..

already an upgrade on anyone who was mentioned here. just let him paly with martial more and see how better we are

Was sort of what you'd expect from someone who hasn't played in a while. Didn't do much, but didn't do anything wrong really either.

Hopefully he'll kick on from here.

not bad performance but I think he can be better than that. well, hopefully Jose gives him more chances so he is back to his performance before that terrible injury and can improve more. He is better fullback/LB choice than Darmian.

Average performance. A few good things, a few bad, overall I think 'average' is the best way to put it.

Hopefully it was enough that he'll get more gametime and he can play himself into something close to form. I don't expect to see him at his best this season, but I'm just hoping he can do enough that we won't have to buy someone else, and then next season he really kicks on and gets back into top form.

He just needs more games to get going. Was a bit tentative to start with today, but he got a bit more confident as the game went on. Even started going forward a bit more. He'll be fine...

Did nothing, although I won't hold it against him. The way he's acted this season, his manager might, though.

There have been comparisons made about him and Evra. The only similarity is their preferred position. Shaw isn't close to being as good a passer as Evra, nor is he as technical or good a dribbler. Evra was phenomenally good at bringing the ball out from defense, even in his last two seasons where he wasn't as good otherwise. Shaw looks a little timid with the ball, and when he tries to drive inside with the ball running past players it looks quite clear that he doesn't have the acceleration that Evra had either.

He is strong, and he's a good tackler, so defensively he should be solid, but he can't afford to give too much space to fast wingers like Valencia can. At first I didn't think he had lost pace after the leg break, but now I'm not so sure. He's better than Darmian though.

He does not seem to have good control when he runs with the ball, so in attack he seems average.

he's Messi compared to Blind or Darmian, really doesnt make sense to criticise his dribbling, think it was evident the difference even though he played after such a long time so it was expected to see some rustyness regarding his touch

I thought he was very poor. Managed to combine being too cautious to make any decent overlapping runs with repeatedly being caught out of position too far up the pitch. Which is quite some achievement.

Looks like it's going to be a long haul to get back to his best. Glad he got minutes under his belt but don't see him starting any time soon.

antoher think weird to criticise, Evra was never a great passer and Shaw had nice nice few passes into the channel today, Shaw looks more playmaking lefback than Evra who was always running up and down the flank, like typical converted winger he was

Very poor:

Made the most interceptions out of any player, but yes very poor.

His confidence looks shot. he needs more games, that leg break has made it hard for him but I still think he can make it here.

Glad to see him get 90 minutes under his belt. Average performance but still as good as Darmian. Hopefully he can build on it

If he doesn't make it back into the first team by end of the season.. will we keep him.

Still looks a shadow of the player he was when he joined us. Seems he's lost that yard of pace and he looks far too reluctant to make that overlap or attacking runs into the box. Was questionable positionally as well. Hopefully it'll come back if he is given time.

understand what you're saying (looked way too lazy on the overlaps - but for all we know he was told not to do that), but don't forget he's been injured and this is his first game back for a while. He's a damn good defender and if his head sets in he'll come good

Confidence does seem shot to pieces though but give him 2nd half of the season to come good

And not derailing the top but just check what confidence / anxiety etc does to a person in our other threads before belitteling an injury he had (not that I'm saying you are by far means by any way so please don't take offence)

As some posters has said I thought he was average as well today, and looked scared or reluctant to move forward with the ball. But, that has to be expected since it was his first full 90 minutes in months!

Also I must say that people give him way too much stick since his return from injury. The guy is 21 years old and had an absolutely terrible injury last season that took over half a year to fully heal. It's obvious that it will affect his development and maybe even change him as a player. I find it crazy that he's being critisized after every game by fans, and thought that Jose's comments earlier didn't help.

He needs a run of games, and needs to try and stay fit. He's only 21, so he's got time on his side. Would take his performance today over any performace by Darmian!

Average at best. Needs confidence again. You never know after a horror injury like he suffered.

Such a shame he got that injury, I honestly think he was on the right track at that point, Van Gaal has to be given credit for that.

All I see now is a nervous player, not only nervous but a player who isn't in the shape needed. Van Gaal eluded to his weight issues, he's clearly overweight and I won't be told otherwise, if he loses that extra weight he becomes a flying machine again.

It goes from terrible to great here.

I thought he had a decent game, considering how long he was out for it was good.

Wasn't good today and it's going to be difficult for him to get a chance to cement a place while every game is a must win. Blind is the best option at the moment.

I thought he was ok today. Problem is he needs a consistent run of games, which he's not going to get at this point in the season.
