@izec I get what you two are saying, the bombing down and physique is a good asset and helps the left winger with the extra width and options, but does it really outweigh Blind's individual qualities for example who is a sublime passer of the ball, a better dribler, has better positioning and a better cross and shot? (But weaker defensively and gets outpaced and outmuscled easier) or other options we could get by Rodriguez, Kurzawa, Gaya for example. I dont think what Shaw brings us is good enough for the level we want to be at, but maybe/hopefully he'll get there in time, he's just 21.
Blind is also the only one who takes a decent corner. All he needs is people not bricking it when he has to deal with a strong and pacey winger.

Honestly thought he would be amazing when he was at Southampton but obviously that injury has really halted his progress. I still think its a bit too soon to get rid and he should definitely get a few more chances before any decision is made.

The fact that Mourinho wanted Shaw when he was at Southampton hopefully means he rates him enough to give him more chances.

he's only coming back from another injury, still super young, will be the best leftback in the world anyway, who would want to get rid, that'd be really awful decision..

I hope so but I don't see Mourinho as the type of manager to keep players he can't trust to be fit around.

He really needs to get going in the remainder of this season. Can't believe it's his 3rd year at United. Jose has managed to turn around the performances of many players this season, so hoping he can do the same for Shaw.

Jones got over his injuries, Shaw only came back from a double leg break there's to be expected some muscle injuries, I am sure he will come back, he barely got injured before he moved here, and jose looks to manage players fitness wisely. fingers crossed

The most annoying thing is the lack of clarity, why journalists don't ask about the situation I'll never know. He was injured, then picked up an illness and now its just a guessing game?

We need to get him back on the pitch. Darmian offers too little going forward, and Blind is too slow against anyone with pace.

yeah some clarification would be nice. when healthy there's no question he's our number 1 leftback

It's a massive shame he was halted by the leg break injury. He looked like he was going to become a really great player and was in great form at that time. He hasn't been the same ever since, that is understandable but I am starting to really think he may never get back the level required to make it here.

Can only hope that he is being given the Mhki treatment right now, and will eventually come back with a bang.

See above. He's fit and available but Mourinho has doubts about his defensive ability. Hopefully he can earn his managers trust with his performances in training over the coming weeks.

Not sure that's what Mourinho's implying at all, he said he wanted to play with a more defensive player i.e one who wouldn't join attacks, like Darmian doesn't.

He didnt say that though, he was responding to an Italian journalist who asked why Darmian played so deep and was changed for Mkhi. He never mentioned Shaw or his defensive ability - that might be the reason why he's not playing, especially in big games but we still aren't really sure, after all he's not even been in the squad for quite a while now.

Would just be nice to get a clear answer on whether he's fit for selection or not - if he is and he's not being played - at least we know.

Don't know if this has been posted before.

That quote had nothing to do with Shaw btw.

Mourinho in his post match press conference was asked by an Italian journo why Darmian didn't cross the halfway line much throughout the match and that was simply Jose's answer. Shaw was never mentioned nor brought into it.

He's definitely available for selection. Been in full training for about a week now. Didn't Mourinho say so at his last presser?

Surely being disciplined is just one of the elements that makes a good defender?
It does, but then again what Darmian makes up for in discipline he lacks in every other area compared to Shaw sadly.

I copied and pasted that stuff from the article I read it in. Must have misinterpreted what he said. Although it's reasonable to assume he thought Darmian would be a more defensively resolute option, surely?

Found the full quotes:

Mourinho, when asked about the nature of Darmian’s role by an Italian journalist, quipped: “Do you want to buy him? Are you an agent? Do you work for the Italian federation?”

“When you have Antonio Valencia playing as a right winger you cannot defend with two players, you need that third player to give some cover inside and to keep some balances, and he [Darmian] did that well.

“But then losing, you take Darmian out and play Mkhitaryan left winger, covering a little bit and Valencia right winger, covering a little bit, and you risk everything.

“But I was watching the game, we were losing, I was looking always to the same side – I have a problem with my neck because I was always looking to the left side – and I watched so many yellow guys in front of me I thought let’s go for it, let’s try.”

We need him back in the side ASAP! I don't even rate Shaw that highly and believe the reports regarding him having a bad attitude however our left side without him seems so poor and with Jose seemingly to prefer Darmian over Blind  Shaw would be a massive upgrade.

He may have thought that, but I don't understand why that article had to mention Shaw. Really odd.

Right before a game against Liverpool is hardly the time to reintegrate a player after some time out. I think Hull in the EFL or Wigan in the FA Cup is when he will feature.

I also think it's the right move to just keep training at full fitness for a couple of weeks and really get into rhythm before playing. He's had fitness issues for a while and keeps picking up these niggles.

Yeah, agree with all of that.

Bench against Stoke, some minutes against Hull and a start against Wigan would be good enough. Hopefully he performs and our problem is solved by Leicester away.

I would want neither of those to happen.

You wouldn't want Griezmann? Seriously? Fantastic player, and is just 25.

I reckon Shaw will be given some chances between now and the end of the season to show he is mentally tough enough to take this challenge on. Think that's all it comes down to with him. So far, can't fault how Mourinho has handled any of our players.

At the start he says "Luke Shaw is almost certain to be on his way out of Old Trafford"

At the end he says "Shaw has not yet been completely written off, and could yet turn his situation around, but those close to the squad saw he has a lot of convincing to do."

You'd think a guy almost certain of being sold is pretty much written off. Not taking this story seriously particularly as Ducker has an article today saying Jose is ready to bring him in from the cold.

Ducker is certainly more reliable than Delaney, Delaney let's his heart get in the way too often writing things he wants to be true rather than what might actually be true.

Not really bothered to be honest. Some would think we losing the second coming of Roberto Carlos.

He's been underwhelming majority of the times. He runs in attack with no discipline. Just look at both Watford goals. I know Martial was fouled for the first, but Shaw just left him exposed. He did the same against Swansea last season.

Part of being a good fullback is when to attack and defend.

He is better than Darmian though.

He is a Chelsea fan! Send him our way in the summer!

Hardly. It should be completely understandable that most of us would be a bit disappointed after spending over £30m on a teenager, being shipped out after a few injury hit seasons without really being given a chance to prove himself or even a decent run in the first team. We bought him because he has plenty of potential (hence making him the second most expensive teenager ever) to be a very good left back which was a problem area for us for 3/4 years before he came.

He showed plenty of defensive capability at Southampton as well, I might add, a few mistakes from a lad who is still in his very early twenties shouldn't make us ignore how good he's shown he can be.
