Manchester United eye £35m Luis Suarez | Football - Times Online
SIR ALEX FERGUSON is pursuing one of European football’s leading young forwards, Luis Suarez, as he prepares to reinforce a Manchester United attack that has yet to fully recover from the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.
The Old Trafford manager has carefully monitored the development of the Uruguay international, who at 22 already captains Ajax Amsterdam, having claimed 54 goals in 75 League appearances for the Dutch club. Suarez — also a regular scorer for his national team — has drawn comparisons with Ronaldo in his ability to play through the centre or on either flank.
Ajax are aware of Ferguson’s inerest and expect a bidding war to develop, with Manchester City, Internazionale and Milan also involved. Appointed coach last summer, Martin Jol considers Suarez essential to the club’s attempts to recover the Dutch title for the first time in six years and is understood to have received an undertaking that his principle attacker will not be sold in the winter window.
However, Ajax are a selling club and would find it difficult to resist a bid approaching their £35m valuation. Though Suarez has told Ajax he is interested in extending his contract, the club are unconvinced of his intentions and recognise that they may be forced to sell. “The technical management have to take this decision, but we are prepared to consider possible good offers,” said Ajax general manager Rik van den Boog. “We want to keep him until the end of the season, but we also want to make him happy.”
