Nani gives his all when he wears the United jersey. Pretending otherwise is simply a lie attached to this mythical arrogant persona that people like to pretend he has. He works as hard as anybody else out there. It's quite bizarre how a section of our support are so quick to denigrate Nani as a person, when all verbal evidence in regards to his character points to him being one of the shyest and most dedicated players in the squad. His form can be debated, but the idea that he doesn't give 100% is largely bollocks.

I think it's because his style of play, "flashy" players never give the impression they can be among the most hardworking too. It's a stupid way of looking at things but it's those footballing clichés.

True.

The one part of his character I'd criticise is that he tends to feel sorry for himself if he's fouled, lying on the floor waving his arms etc rather than getting up and getting on with it. While not a very endearing trait in itself, this somehow gets inflated by his critics into a) Diving / Play-acting and b) Not giving a shit.

How is calling it play acting inflating it? That's exactly what it is. One time, when Carragher hit him hard, he was legitimately hurt, every other time he is fine to get up and continue after rolling around for a minute.

I said it when he sigend his new contract and I'll stand by it: Nani - five more years of frustration. In a squad like United's you have to be ready to take your chances when they come to you, if you can't there will be someone more deserving getting the games ahead of you. That's the story of Nani at United.

Agree with both of you, particularly the point that he tends to mope about on the floor when 'fouled'. It's irritating, definitely, but it doesn't deserve some of the accusations that get levelled at him. I might be naive, but I think all of our players put in 100% when out there playing.

Valencia is the same, just less ability. He isnt forcing Moyes hand because he isnt producing in the final third

I meant Nani's lack of productivity forces Moyes to pick Valencia. Valencia is less adventurous and will just look for the square pass or pass it back, Nani was shooting from all over the place last time I saw him.

That's the cycle when a player doesn't get games. Same thing happened to Tevez here. And we all know how good Tevez is when he does play all the time.

I agree, but he is frustrating to watch. It is easy to say give him a run of games but they have to be earned.

I don't think only Nani does this but I hate it when a player mopes around and won't move until the ball is out of play even if their own side have possession. You sometimes see it where a player goes down, the team have to end a promising period of play and then immediately they pop back up, as if they wanted some kind of acknowledgement of their misfortune.

Not saying only Nani does this but just reading what you said reminded me of this general peeve I have.

No it's not, or not generally anyway (I'm sure there are some examples of play-acting as there are with most players).

Play-acting is putting on a show pretending to have been injured to try and get somebody in trouble - it's cheating. What Nani mostly does is much more introspective, sitting on his arse like a sulking kid. It's annoying and immature, but it's not cheating.

Valencia isnt being productive either. He's just as frustrating as Nani on his worst days. Nani averages 2 passes that lead to a shot (10 total) Valencia 0.8 (7 total), not even half Nani's average. Nani averages 1 accurate cross a match (5 out of 24 attempts total), bettered only by Evra at 1.2 which still isnt a lot but hey. Valencia is down at 0.6 accurate crosses a match (5 out of 32 attempts total) and with Valencia having 2 more starts and 2 more sub appearances than Nani.

Nani also averages 3.2 dribbles per match so far this season with 16 total dribbles so far. Valencia averages 1.7 per match with 15 total so far.

Nani had some good matches at the start of the season and he's had some bad ones too, theres no disputing that he's been up and down so far this season. But he continues, as ever, to be more productive than Valencia so no, Nani is not forcing Moyes hand not to pick him by being unproductive. He's still being more productive than the player who replaces him on the right.

Valencia is bad more quietly, whereas Nani's feck-ups tend to be loud and obvious.

This is not the basis the team should be chosen on... I could play and go hide in a corner if Moyes values that.

Nani hasn't had a game as good as Valencia's against Leverkusen this season. With Valencia you are guaranteed a high workrate and good defensive solidity on the right. For all those stats you spewed how many goals has Nani created? or key passes has he put through. From what I have seen Nani only has himself to blame.

Hehehehe "introspective" is a kind way of putting it.

Nani vs. West Brom is better than Valencia vs. Leverkusen, clearly IMO. Nani has also created one goal (Januzaj winner against Sunderland). In terms of key passes, Nani has created 10 chances in 5 games; Valencia has created 7 in 9 games. But that shouldn't matter - key passes isn't an accurate measure of chances created. I've already explained this a couple of times... If Carrick passes the ball to Cleverley, who from fifty yards out shoots, then this is registered as a key pass.

Your final point is baffling because Nani has had one poor game this season...

In that game he was VERY poor. He will get his chance lets see what he does with it. I really haven't seen Nani do much this season. He himself said we will see the real Nani after the last international break then he put in his worst game of the season.

Nani just hasn't impressed me.

Wait, you think he was poor against West Brom? You must be the only one. That was, by far, his best game for us this season. He put in four great balls and took on players without failure. I've seen Nani in decent form this season. Here are some of his performances:

Nani's touch is off, but he almost scored and played a good ball to Hernández in the lead up to Van Persie's chance.

Nani's first start for us this season.

Decent performance, though nothing special. Delivery was off, but managed to set up the winner.

Nani's best performance this season - and the best performance any of our wingers have offered us. Excellent (consistent) delivieries and absoutely destroyed West Brom. Almost picked up an assist.

He hasn't played at right back either. He's ignoring the statistics that show Valencia has more goals and assists than Nani.

You just proved how unfair you are on Nani. In that game he was one of our best players for 90 minutes, and defintely our best player in first half.

Very poor? No one is asking you to like him, but at least admit if he has a good game.

I think Moyes has been fair with the wide players this season. None have particularly been good, other than Januzaj, but all of them have had patches or glimpses of decent form, aside from Young. Fergie was a lot more rigid in the game time he would have given Valencia and I think Nani would have played less in SAF was still manager. Valencia's been preferred over Nani recently because of his displays at Fulham and Real Sociedad at home which were good. Nani not playing in the away leg against Sociedad is the only thing that has surprised me considering Valencia started against Arsenal as well. There's no automatic first choice at the moment which is due to the form of the experienced players and not wanting to overexpose Januzaj. Nani's still well in the mix and not down the pecking order like it felt he was under Fergie last season.

Completely agree. I think we're in a situation where Moyes can rotate from Valencia, Nani, Kagawa and Januzaj quite freely and whoever does well will get to play. Welbeck is also in the mix. It's a good thing and hopefully they will all push each other on.

How is Nani responsible for the finish a striker puts on the end of his pass or cross? Nani has played as well as Valencia vs. Leverkusen, he hasnt scored yet and needs to change that. But other than that he's done enough to get chances in the team

We are mixing up games I believe, there was a particular game (I forget the team) where he kept shooting, that is the game I am referencing. I have nothing against Nani at all.

Then you're the one who is mixing up the games, because that was against Stoke.

You know its rough when a poor cross that a defender cleared and landed on our players foot who finishes it is called 'creating a goal'

This is the problem on the Caf, people let their feelings towards a player cloud their judgement. There is no way on God's green that you can say he was poor in that game.

Think Nani's problem is that fans have high expectations for him, higher than most because we know how good he can be and how talented he is. The petulance doesn't help either

It is quite hilarious considering the Caf favorites, Rooney and Januzaj, has the exact same weaknesses as Nani. Rooney gets dispossessed most in our team and also loses the ball often due to poor control/first touch.

It wouldn't be crazy to let him have a run-out on the left either, so it's not necessarily a case of Nani vs Valencia. Kagawa hasn't exactly set the world on fire, he's been competent at best. We could start Adnan and Nani against Cardiff and they could even do a bit of interchanging.

Depends on how Moyesie views the upcoming fixtures. With Carrick out he might prefer Valencia as per default - given his, well, solidity. He may not be brilliantly unpredictable - but he looks very reliable defensively at the moment. We may have to just grind out some more results, hopefully closing the gap further, for a little while longer - before we can start expressing ourselves freely, so to speak.

No, it's not an "assist" but he still created the chance that led to our first goal that day.
And I doubt many would be singing from the rooftops about it had it been one of our more unfashionable wingers.

Your first sentence works both ways. Nani fans go over the top when he plays about how good he was. facts are that we now have another manager who isn't quite as convinced it seems.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the Stoke game in which he most certainly was poor.

Hardly, but it's what happened. His cross led to the goal? Much like his cross led to the goal against Sunderland. Nobody is saying he is playing great or anything, but these 2 things happened. He is a decent crosser of the ball and has created numerous chances in the games he has started. The Stoke game stands out a very poor performance, but he still contributed to a goal.

John O'Shea's poor defending contributed more to the goal against Sunderland. The cross was shit, the header was worse. Facts are Nani has no goals and no assists. It was regularly used against Young and Valencia last season so fair's fair.

A shit cross is one that doesn't beat the first defender, one that is blazed across with no purpose or direction, or something flying into the crowd. The cross was far from shit. Yes, no goals or assists but his performances before Stoke were decent, and one bad performance resulted in fans booing him and sarcastically cheering him being substituted and we haven't seen him on the team sheet since.

Yep it does, didn't say it doesn't, being objective isn't one of our stronger points on here

And he was talking about the West Brom game then tried to cop a plea and say he got the games mixed up when presented with evidence as to why he was wrong.

Nani has been creating opportunities. I don't even think that's up for debate.
