Luis Nani | 2013/14 Performances

Two assists and one (disallowed) goal, after coming on as a sub.

Nani was excellent for Portugal. Seriously, his last two performances are not that of a player who hasn't played much. His assist to Coentrao was similar to his assist for Rooney's second goal against AC Milan, in 09/10.

That disallowed goal. . . . wow!! :drool::drool:

The above are just an example of why Nani is my favourite current utd player. He can, at times, be mesmerizing and capable of doing things none of our other players can.
The one-two passing leading up to his disallowed goal is what I would love to see us doing.

i want him to do well. I believe that if he had been given the same chances as Valencia and Young he would have done much better than them. For some reason Val or Young can have a nightmare run of games yet still get games. Nani on the hand can have a good game and then goes missing.

So are people still expecting him to be sold? Rumors have quitened down over his move to Juventus the last heard was Van Gaal reportably blocking deal not sure how reliable the source was though.

Even if we do sign Sanchez or another winger I think he should stay he put in some incredible performances from the left especially when SAF went 4-3-3

See this is the real Nani. If we can get that out of him regularly we need no other wide players.

That's why its so frustrating to hear him always linked away, or not being given a chance regularly!

Great stuff. Have really high hopes from Van Gaal when it comes to how we play and what he does with players like Januzaj, Welbeck, Nani and Clev. I think all of them can improve massively under him.

Looking forward to watching him in Brazil - I'm really hoping he comes back at the end of the summer after a cracking tournament and on a real confidence high.

If there's any truth to the rumours of a move to Juventus being blocked by LVG then it could be an interesting upcoming season for Nani fans.

Nani will thrive under lvg, I'm certain

I think I agree but it's so difficult to get myself excited about Nani again after being let down so many times.

Every season for what seems like forever I stick him in my FF team thinking that it's his year only to remove him after a couple of weeks of same old same old.

Same here but he has so much natural ability I cannt give up on him

Nani needs games. He is a confidence/instinct player. I have always been a Nani fanboy. I do not know why he was barely played last season. Even when Moyes left, i do not think he played under Giggsy. LvG....please sort Nani out. He has potential to do amazing things. I hope he plays a big part next season.

Nani has always been a confidence player. At United he's always just one bad game away from not just being dropped, but also receiving abuse from the fans and Rooney, and whenever that has happened he has invariably lost confidence and form. He can never be consistent under those conditions in my opinion. He's better off at another club outside England.

The past three or so seasons have been bizarre regarding Nani. He's such a fecking brilliant player when on song.

Nice frickin goal that!

His ability is ridiculous when he's determined to show it. No wonder Fergie wanted to keep him even when he didn't play him much to say the least. That disallowed goal was all his work, he basically used his teammates to create a goalscoring chance for himself. Hope he has an even better tournament than Euro 2012 where he was mostly very good.

Has the potential to our best player but needs a regular run in the team which he hasn't had for 2 years now for various reasons. Hope that changes next season with Van Gaal.

When you think that both Fergie and Moyes used Valencia ahead of him in last two years it makes you cry.

No one doubts the lads ability, just hos mentality. He has the ability tat we shouldn't even be considering selling him.

He really is a superb player when it all comes together. Still think a move is best for all parties though. He's had a good career with us but I can't see him becoming the player he once was and we need some fresh legs in there.

It is depressing, especially when you see what Nani's capable of, at his best.

It's fairly obvious that the reason Nani didn't get games wasn't just down to some weird blind spot or bias from two consecutive managers. Especially when Fergie's got a track record of having Nani as one of the first names on his team-sheet over an extended period of time. Neither Fergie or Moyes are stupid and wouldn't have persisted with underwhelming performers like Young and Valencia ahead of Nani without very good reasons.

Feck knows exactly why Nani stayed stuck down the pecking order for so long but the onus is obviously on him to force his way into the manager's plans. A good WC would be the perfect platform for him to make his case in front of Van Gaal.

I would agree with you if it wasnt for the new manager. New manager, new start. There is no reason we should let Nani go and bring in someone who is no better, at a net loss to ourselves, when we should be focusing on other areas of the pitch. When you see him doing that kind of thing you realise he hasnt lost it, it is still there in him somewhere. Im sure by the end of the WC Van Gaal will be hard for Nani and will fancy his chances of coaxing it out of him.

Though given that Ghana are going through that group in second place, Portugal may be going home early. So I hope he turns it on in the group stages enough to get noticed.

He was MOTM last night and he was only on for 30 minutes. I was actually disappointed his goal was ruled out, great play from him.

I disagree. He's still young, and at peak performance he's still a top5 of wingers in Europe. Can he rediscover some form and keep his negative performances lower than previously, then he'd still be a greater asset than Young, Valencia.

It's a tough one but for the last couple of seasons he's been poor under two different managers. He seems to get niggling injuries all the time now and is 28 in November. Not old but he isn't as explosive as he once was and I can't see him recovering to the level he was. Seems to want to leave as well.

I think with Fergie it was always down to his contract issues, plus he had few injuries that season, altough tbh I never understood why Fergie froze so many players that were running out of contract in general.
It made no sense at all IMO, same happened with Berbatov few years back. It was like he was mad of them, really weird. If anything, if he wanted to get rid of him, playing him he would use what's "left of him", and in the end he would get more money for player who played all the time rather than for one who was frozen.
And I don't think it was down to his lack of quality, inconsistency, being poor defensively etc.(at least it was average caf excuse for not playing him) because it was obvious that Fergie rated him very highly, you don't start player who was frozen for whole season against Real Madrid if you don't trust him, just to drop him for next few easy games.

As for Moyes era, I have no idea, but I never saw any logic behind single Moyes' decision anyway.

Everyone was rubbish under Moyes so I am inclined to discount that. What happened under SAF for the last few seasons is certainly a mystery but Id really like to see him under a second manager (I discounted Moyes, remember) before I write him off.

Fergie clearly had some issues with Nani but he still brought back Nani for CL game against Real.

Does anyone know if he's a guaranteed starter for Portugal? Or is he likely to be on the bench like last night?

Starter definitely, he was probably on the bench because he played both last games almost full 90 minutes for them.

It was one of the most intriguing selection decisions I can remember in recent years. It flew in the face of everything that seemed to be happening in the months leading up to that point, and then he played so well, you just thought, what has been going on here? Even if he was injured for much of that time, as he surely was, it was strange in itself how little information was coming out about it, keeping us informed about a return date or something. Like the journalists had been instructed not to ask about him or they wouldnt be allowed into any more press conferences.

iirc he was also very good against Chelsea in the FA cup at home before he got injured. Can't remember whether that was before or after the CL game.
