Luis Nani | 2013/14 Performances

Funny thing with Nani, whenever hes out or not in the team he always seems to become the answer to any problems that the team are having. Then he has a game or two.

Mata, Januzaj, Rooney is the way forward.

Agree with the bolded.

The issue is when any of these 3 are rested or injured who comes in (this will still be a big role ala Schurrle for Chelsea)? Kagawa, Nani, Young or Valencia? Has to be Nani for me.

Given he seems to have had a series of muscle injuries over the past couple of years they may have been trying to dig a bit deeper.

I remember Giggs saying when he kept picking up muscle strain, they checked everything from the car he was driving to the shoes he was wearing, before he found a way to manage things by not hitting sprints too hard and things like yoga. That was years ago, presumably now they've got a whole new battery of imaging techniques to look at the things like muscle symmetry and running style.

Maybe they can rebuild him! Bigger, fitter, stronger, faster? Let's hope.

Important Update

Further to the megathreads announcement, this megathread has been renamed and should be confined to discussing Nani's performances this season. For any other discussions about Nani, please bump or create separate threads.

Thanks!

"It's pretty clear that he's not in the manager's plans at the moment," a club source explained. "He signed a new contract at the start of the season, but that's making it harder to offload him now. He's on a lot of money and I don't think there'll be many willing to match that."

How reliable are the quotes? disapointing if true

Oh c'mon JB, he's been injured for the greater part of the season, I'm surprised you take nonsense like that as read. It's just a load of old tosh rehashed yet again.

The thing which I completely did not understand was not giving Nani any game time against West Ham. You would have thought that with our wingers in such God awful form and with Januzaj going off the boil a bit, Moyes may have got Nani some minutes under his belt seeing that we had 3 huge fixtures coming up. But instead he stays on the bench and then obviously does not make the squad against City. Some of Moyes' management really baffles me.

He'll probably use him in meaningless games at the end of season and realise that he was idiot for not giving him more chances when he was fit.

Yes and that's the point. Use him when he could be handy. If (when?) we go out to Bayern, Nani's good form will not be of much use to us.

Which part mate? They were quotes... I hadn't read that previously, I assumed as much, but never heard it confirmed.... Also, didn't see who the quote was from, unless I missed that?

Season review on Nani (Part I). Part I contains shots, defensive actions, and skills. Easiest one to make as he's not played that much.

Part II will contain passes (crosses).

Seems bizarre he hasn't got on in the last couple of games. If he's fit enough for the bench, and we're strolling a game out, why not give him 10-15mins!

Should of got some minutes yesterday especially with Young getting a full game. We had the chance against West Ham and Villa to get him upto speed, maybe even for the Bayern game especially in the away leg.

With our play being very predictable at the minute, Nani can provide something that our team currently lack, he can beat a man, his crossing is hit and miss but he can provide some superb crosses.

Its amazing that Sir Alex, in what he knew was his last season and last crack at another European Cup, brought Nani in from the wilderness for the crucial Madrid tie...

...and now he can't even get a kick. Wouldn't Fergie's decision to use Nani against Madrid, knowing he wouldn't get a second chance at European glory, give some indication that Nani's worth giving a go to if you need a little something special?

Definitely should have with Valencia likely injured for the game and our need for pace on the counter against Bayern. Surprised hasn't been given minutes in the last three games.

This is the kind of thing dont get about Moyes. He gas done it a few times where he has not given a player minutes to give him options. If he is fit then he should get some minutes to test himself and gives us more choice.

He sure gave us a little something special that night

He's been out for last ~16 matches out injured lads, not surprised that Moyes is not playing him at the moment. Agree he could've gotten a couple of minutes in the last match but it's no biggie. I think that it's the summer when we'll find out whether this contract extending was to play him or get more monies for him.

There is something seriously wrong with this situation if Nani still can't get over the forever inept Young.

He gets named on the bench every week but never seen. He's a bench filler right now.

Hope he starts against Newcastle, puts in a good performance so he's in with a chance of being an impact sub next week. Young is pretty useless and Nani shouldn't start against Bayern as he hasn't played at all but as a sub he can make a difference.

He had all the talent to follow Ribery's career trajectory, sadly hasn't fulfilled it. I don't think he'll start against Bayern as the front three will remain the same and they all made a good case for their inclusion in the away leg.

I think Young was brought in today to close the game as he is defensively more sound. Also, Nani hasn't had a lot of minutes this season and it would have been risky bringing him on tonight.

he s saving himself for the world cup...that ll be his showcase to get a new contract somewhere else.

We will sell him, he will go somewhere that he is first choice, he will play well and we will all be sat here watching Young.

Some will complain that Nani was never that consistent for us, others will point out that actually, when he was PLAYED consistently, he performed consistently.

Bringing Nani on against a team that runs as if their lives depends and keeps the ball better than the Zodiac Killer keeping his identity hidden is not a good idea. Poor bloke has had no football for months and probably would have played none tonight even if he'd come on at the start of the 2nd half. I expect he'll play against Newc and could start in Munich if he has a good game at the weekend or at least come off the bench.

Good to see him back; bit rusty but some neat pieces of play - has a big habit of starting/being involved in those great pieces of link up play in recent years

Good to know. We really need him at the World Cup. We have no real alternatives (besides Bebe :p)

He thrives around players with great link up play and technical ability. First minutes in over 3 and a half months and he looked pretty good.

Jepp, he really does. He is such a great footballer compared to Valencia and Young. He just adds to our movement and play in a whole different way than all the other players we have on the wing or that can play on the wing (Januzaj is the same).
