Follow protocol and give him a ban and no point is made. Give him an extra game or two ban and they are actively saying "We at UEFA fully back the referee's decision and want to make everybody knows that we think it was a dangerous challenge and worthy of a red card".
 
I'm quite confident Nani will sign an extension. Going by what Nani has said himself, I strongly believe that he wants to stay here. The Zenit situation in the summer, only reinforces this. Considering what Zenit paid for Hulk and Witsel after they failed to land Nani, I think we were offered stupid money for Nani and allowed them to speak with him solely because the figure was too good to turn down, not because we were actively trying to offload him.

It's been confirmed that Nani asked for an astronimical amount, which tells me that he doesn't want to leave here, but would have if they gave him whatever the unreasonable amount was.

Fine for Fergie - fair enough. He knew he'd be getting it, no one really cares (as ridiculous as the whole approach to interviews is now).

Ban for Nani - laughable. But again, not really significant. They screwed us over when we lost the match, the rest is just aftermath bullshit.
 
It's self-regulation, what do you expect? UEFA is an utter fecking farcical organisation.
 
One match is better than expected though.

But surely that tackle falls under "violent/reckless behaviour" which I thought was an automatic two game ban, so is this basically UEFA admitting, in some backwards way, that it wasn't?

In a way, I suppose. Put it this way: if there's been any justifiable grounds for a longer ban, (which there would have been if Nani had done what the red card implies Cakir thought he had done), UEFA would have jumped on it in a flash.

Yeah but it still makes no sense to me really. I was under the impression that a one game ban is two yellows, or a cynical challenge, and two/three game bans are for reckless/violent tackles. If this now qualifies as neither, what the hell is it?

UEFA, fecking hell.

EDIT: Just saw Laphraiogs post, makes more sense.

Yet Vidic got a two game suspension last season. And that red card was wrong too (or debatable at the very least).

Could have just been "a cynical challenge", no?

All quite arbitrary distinctions, they can do what the hell they want, basically.
 
For me a "cynical" red card offense is a last-man back, stopping a goal scoring opportunity etc, so there's nothing cynical about his challenge.

A one game ban is contrition of sorts. The standard ban is 3 games, no?
 
A small bonus for us, but in fairness a 1 game ban or a 3 game ban doesn't make much odds, as it cost us when we needed it the most.

We'd be fine without him for 2-3games next season I'm sure, if he's even still with us.

Only small relief was that such a bad decision happened in the 2nd round, rather than the semi or the final!
 
I'm actually surprised that Evra escaped a punishment this time.

Handing Nani a one-game ban is basically them saying: We know the Cuent fecked up big time that we can't even punish Nani for it.

Eamonn Holmes says Nani brings drama. For a guy who's very vocal about his support and has a pretty decent relationship with Sir Alex, that was silly (though he is of course entitled to an opinion).

One of those with the belief Nani is off with Zaha as a replacement. Luckily no mention of inside knowledge so hopefully he's just WUMing for the mainstream audience.
 
If he thinks Zaha was brought as a direct replacement for Nani, he's probably a bit retarded.

This is what my point was above about expecting them to extend the ban to give backing to the ref. They've as good as admitted that it wasn't a dangerous challenge using excessive force which is what the red logically speaking had to be given for.
 
Sadly, I still think he's off. Thought he'd be off in January, to which I was clearly wrong about - but I still get an incl-in that this praise Fergie is giving him is just camouflaging the fact that he's off in the Summer.

I hope he doesn't, but time will tell. We've been linked with a few players of his mold, plus we have Zaha coming in. We have so many players able to play in that front 4 position (Van Persie, Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck, Kagawa, Young, Nani, Valencia, soon to be Zaha, Giggs). Just seems like too many, and that someone will want to move on to have more first team football.
 
I'm pretty confident he will stay now, the last month or two has convinced me they would have seen enough to know we can't replace his quality unless we spend massive. Even then we'd be reducing our numbers on the wing and as this season has shown, it's already far too light.

Not sure how you can we have too many, it's not the front four we need to worry about, it's the wings.....and the only real wingers we have are Nani, Valencia and Young. Giggs can still play there, we can put Rooney out wide as well as Kagawa, but they are not real wingers. Zaha is still an unknown quantity at this point, and we clearly can't rely on playing Valencia and Young throughout the season, form and injury have been a consistent problem for us for more than just this season.

We can't replace Nani's quality without spending huge, and that's on top of whatever money we'd get from his transfer. I'm sure we'll just pay the wages.
 
I guess, but I just see Fergie thinking about Welbeck's game time, as well as Kagawa's. They don't play in their preferred position much due to Van Persie and Rooney respectively. Adding to the fact Hernandez needs games too, Fergie might want to give a few games to Welbeck on the wing.

We don't have anyone else in Nani's mould at the club at the moment, except him of course so it'll be disappointing to see him leave. There's been no murmurings at all about a contract recently (well I haven't heard any anyway), hence why I can see him go.

Valencia, Young, Zaha, Kagawa, Welbeck. I can honestly see us going into the season with that. As I said, time will tell. If Nani stays/signs a new contract, I'll be pleased to say I was wrong.
 
I really doubt Fergie is going to reduce the quality of our wingplay, something we do rely on, purely to give Welbeck, Hernandez and Kagawa game-time, not when there are players who can play better in that position, and when they all play better in their natural positions. It makes no sense. He will simply rotate them with our strikers like he has been doing all season. Welbeck really is not an answer for us, because he is not a winger, and I'm sure apart from filling in for injuries or if a player is very badly out of form, he is not being considered for that position at all.

That might have been the case last season when it looked like we had better options, but considering the overall performances of our wingers this season, I'm sure he isn't going to leave things as they stand, and certainly not reduce it even further.

Time will tell though I suppose.
