I'm confident this season he will be the best player in our league and for our club.

He's a level above any other winger in this league, by a good distance.

He was last season yet he didn't get any recognition for it.

But I'd agree with Boss, if Rooney stays fit and on form he'll be on another level, even to Nani.

I think that's debatable, on his best Nani is more effective in attack, Rooney is better with his overall game.

Their 'best' levels are almost irrelevant to me though, I find Nani more consistent than Rooney, and think he will be the player to shine this season. It will be between them two anyway. Unless Rooney keeps up the form he is in, which is doubtful as it generally doesn't last season long.

what is that supposed to mean exactly?

rooney is at the heart of most of our moves. whether it be initiating them or that final pass, he's there more often than not. his all round game is very crucial to the way we play tbh.

consistency again is debatable, both of them have rough patches but every player has them. both can go form world class to having stinkers in consecutive games.

Well, I think on their best form, Nani is our most effective attacking player, whereas Rooney is overall our best player, in terms of his positiong, movement and most importantly distribution. Nani is far more direct than Rooney, and can take on and pass players with more ease, and creates more chances, but Rooney is the heartbeat of our moves when on form and usually drops a little deeper, influencing all of our play.

Consisenty isn't really debatable. Nani in recent years has reached a level of consistency that he has carried from season to season, I don't think we will be seeing his 'bottom' levels for an extended period again. Alternatively, Rooney tends to go through spells each season, even his most clinical one had spells where he was poor. However, he's brought his excellent form from January onwards to this season, so here's hoping it can continue.

That's probably fair. Nobody else in the team can dribble, cross or shoot from distance as well as Nani can, on a consistent basis anyway. Maybe Young would be the closest to him.

And yes, a lack of consistency should apply more so to Rooney than Nani nowadays. He needs to deliver for the full season.

But still, I think Rooney will be regarded as our best player if he keeps it up.

Each to their own mind, I know I'll be in the minority here, but I have wild expectations of Nani and how he will develop into something special. Either way, we have the two best players in the league in full form at the moment.

oh that i agree with totally. nani is the most ''direct'' attacking threat that we have.

consistency, am inclined to agree with you but i still think both are well capable of dropping off. nani did that towards the tail end of last season. rooney does it too from time to time. neither of them are as consistent as say a valencia but they are very consistent performers nonetheless.

As of now, he is already something special. i would expect more jaw dropping moments from him throughout the season

The nani being inconsistent bit and the recently coming good thing are such cliches. its like people will say the same even after another couple of seasons.

He's coming good and improving all the time but in two years he could quite easily still be labelled inconsistent.

That said, Is Young now the best winger in the country?

I think Nani's was a combination of playing at that level for so long, followed by an injury he didn't fully recover from, you could see in the initial games afterward, he showed some real hesitation when tackles came in. Even then he was still quite good for us, but we just had the option of Valencia, who was in better form, and fitter.

Rooney has generally shown each season he needs a period to regain his form, and that's something that has been with him since he started here. He just doesn't offer the same levels of consistency as him, but he can obviously be more effective in that time. Nani was much slower at making an impact, but when he did, he has maintained his consistency not only over multiple seasons, but without a real drop in quality, apart from when he suffered injury. Then again, Rooney to me looks in a better form than he's ever been in his life, like an ultimate combination of Rooney's that has played for us, so perhaps this season will be the difference.

I tipped him for the PFA award last season but unfortunately I think he's too disliked. Maybe if he continues in the same vain it'll be too much to overlook but who knows.

Rooney has started the season with a bang and looks unusually in shape early doors, if he can maintain his form over the whole season he'll he our best player for me.

No, still behind Valencia when in full flight.

On the Nani vs Rooney consistency thing, so far this season Rooney has been the more consistent performer of the two. Nani was sensational yesterday (as he was against City in the Carling Cup) but has put in some fairly mediocre performances too (WBA and Spurs).

That was Rooney's first slightly below par performance this season and he still managed to score one and hit the post.

Looking back over the last couple of years Rooney seems to go into lengthy slumps and hot streaks, whereas Nani can go from brilliant to average to brilliant, all in the space of a handful of games. So far this season, there's no question that Rooney's been the better player but he needs to do what he hasn't managed before and keep up this level of performance for most of the season.

Nani will always blow a little bit hot and cold, just like Giggs, but that shouldn't be held against him. It's the nature of the position he plays. If he can maintain the overall form from last season, or even improve on it slightly, he'll finish this season as comfortably one of the best 4 or 5 players in the league.

Yeah Rooney has undoubtedly been our best player this season so far. Followed by Young and possibly Anderson.

Giggs is a good comparison to make with Nani, it's easy how to forget how frustrating he was (and sometimes still is) because he constantly tried the unexpected and to be flamboyant and unpredictable in his play, and that's never going to come off the whole time so naturally it can be frustrating to watch at times, but generally it does come off a few times and can lead to a match winning moment.

Hell, Giggs on Wednesday is the absolute definition of Nani up until 18 - 24 months ago. Frustrate the shit out of everyone and have them calling for a sub, and then score a belter of a goal.

Rooney is the better player but Nani is a lot more likely to come up with individual brilliance/something out of nothing. I'm glad we have both.

18-24 months ago? Nani is still that sort of player.

For every 90 minutes of dominance like we saw at the weekend he's also capable of having a very ordinary game, only to win it for us with a moment of brilliance.

The big difference between now and 18-24 months ago is that it's become very rare for him to have a game which doesn't conform to one or other of the above two scenarios. Which is why he's become so incredibly productive.

No he's not. The example I gave in that Giggs match was more like the Nani of old because (sorry Giggsy) he was pretty damn poor for the rest of the game, well certainly the first half.

Nani is rarely like that now, if you're saying he's like that then so are the likes of Rooney and Hernandez who also have pretty poor games at times and still produce a bit of sparkle in them to win it or what not. In most games last season he was constantly beating his man and putting in great crosses, hitting good shots and causing havoc. This season hasn't been up to that level yet but he's still been pinging beautiful crosses in constantly still.

Neither Anderson nor Young have been better than Nani so far this season

I'm not so sure either. Young looked better for a game or two, but he hasn't had his consistency or presence. Anderson the same, but both have had bright starts to the league. Nani I'm sure will have a much better season, well, certainly over Young anyway.

Really? I think Young has been very consistent so far. I think he had a good game against Chelsea too but Nani overshadowed him in the end.

I thought his initial games were a class apart, that Arsenal game was just ridiculous it really was, but overall I thought he's faded at times, perhaps down to his explosive start. I'd have Nani above him at the moment, but not much between them at all. I suppose it's a bit immaterial, they are both performing very well, especially Young given how new he is to the squad and this level of football.

Has Nani been more consistent than Young? I think the only below par game either of them have had is West Brom and that was when Nani wasn't his usual self.

As I said, there's hardly anything between them, I personally feel Young has had a few longer periods where he hasn't been as involved as much, but really it's pretty immaterial. Certainly no glaring differences in quality between them, which I suppose is a huge compliment to Young.

Yeah, either way they're the 2 best wingers in the PL right now, and that's nice to have.

I think everyone knew Young would add to the team but to actually be so good in his first few games that he's recognized as one of our best performers along with Rooney and Nani is quite something.

Indeed. Goes without saying that if he matched Nani's performances throughout the season then we'd tear apart pretty much every defence in the league. Asking a bit much of Young though, to be fair.

I'm kinda excited to see Nani and Valencia playing a full game together on the right. Just imagine the 2 of them on that right flank together, on top form against weaker opposition.

Obviously they'd need to stick to their defensive duties too!

feck that, attack attack attack.

Was laughing at weekend actually, after what J Redknapp said about the time Cole had with Nani, I'd already been thinking that as Valencia warmed up... poor Cole must've been shitting it knowing that the two players that have completely raped him in the past few months were soon both going to be coming at him!

The play at around 15 seconds was also impressive, left Ivanovic completely on his ass.

Nani has played 7 matches this season so far. He was great against City in the Charity Shield, then was fairly quiet in his first three league games. Then he's been fantastic again in his last 3 games.

Young was great in the first three league matches, then relatively quiet in the following two (he didn't play in the CL if I remember correctly). Can't remember if he played in the Charity Shield, I'm guessing he did but have no idea how well he did.

So it's been fairly even so far, with it being notable that so far they haven't been fantastic at the same time yet. On the other side of the coin, every match we've played we've had one of them playing brilliantly (until Leeds yesterday when neither played).
