my answer to the orginal question, without the ronaldo coparison is YES!!!! Easily. May have my United blinkers on but id have Ashley Young as the second best winger in the league at the minute and i would also have big Tony V as number 3!!!! wouldnt swap either of those for any winger in the league!!!!

Ronaldo's downfall in the CL final is that he tried to win it all by himself at times. It was like going back to when he was an 18 year old.

He wasn't doing it all season, the cl final came and his mentality changed. He wasn't playing like that vs Arsenal or Porto.

Ronaldo was one of our better players in Rome. He was one of only a few that did their absolute nut to win the game. He may have tried to win it on his own, but he has bugger all support from the likes of Rooney and Carrick.

This and that.

Ronaldo was nowhere near as bad as Valencia in their respective Champions League Final, Ronaldo actually posed a threat, all Valencia did was foul people and give the ball away.

Valencia was pretty horrible in the final tbf. No impact whatsoever.

Ronaldo was better but he was average at best. Ronaldo is expected to be better anyway he's vastly superior to Valencia as a player, and I mean vastly ...also he had very little defensive priorities.

While Valencia had to defend and was getting him bumhole picked apart for 90 mins.

Unnoticed, like most of the team.

Denmark really seems to have their number. Is that 3 straight losses to them, head to head?

Portugal won the last game 3-1. Dk won the previous 2 I think.
Amazed at how easily subdued Nani was in the game. But then again Silberbauer (his direct opposition) had a great game. MoM in my view

As I have said earlier I do firmly believe that nani is now the best winger in the country. I avoided the ronaldo comparison but my take on it is that if you are comparing nani and ronaldo as wingers……then nani is the better winger. He scores fewer goals than ronaldo but still a lot for a wide man. But he creates far more through direct assists than ronaldo did. He's also a better crosser of a ball and his tracking back has improved massiveley.

However…..if you comapred them as footballers,,,,,you cant. Ronaldo is streets ahead. But there is no shame in that. Ronaldo and messi are miles ahead of anybody in the current game and are two of the greatest ever. I shouldn’t and doesn’t detract from the fact that nani…….as a winger is the best in the country and I personally wouldn’t swap him for any other "winger in the world". He's miles better than pedro!!!

I agree with this pretty much. I just fear that Madrid or Barca will soon come calling as I'd hate to see Nani leave.

Surely last night proved that we're over reliant on him? When Rooney is off form, get the ball to Nani. He was doing everything by himself at times.

I think it's fair to say what was said before, he's really not far off Rooney in terms of importance to the club, which should not be the case.

Nani admits he "wept like a kid" after Manchester United's UEFA Champions League exit but has challenged his team-mates to bounce back.

United crashed out of the competition at the group stage on Wednesday night after they failed to get the point needed against Basel to secure their progression to the last 16.

Portuguese winger Nani says it was an emotional evening for him and his colleagues but is confident the Red Devils can get back on track, and believes manager Sir Alex Ferguson is the perfect man to help them do that.

He told the Daily Star: "I wept like a kid in the dressing room in Basel.

"All of my team-mates were also affected because nobody could quite believe that we had been knocked out at just the group stage. It was like hell in there.

"This defeat and the loss at Wembley in the final last May have been the worst two days in my United career.

"I am so sad about what has happened. It is almost unbelievable. The dressing room in Basel was like a funeral.

He added: "This squad is one which is ready to win big titles, so to go out like this is a complete nightmare.

"We know we are better than some of the other teams, so it is hard to be able to work out exactly how this has happened.

"I do not think that we were too arrogant or complacent. United are a team which always respects their opponents.

"We are damaged but this is the moment for us to soar, and try and bounce back. Now the Premier League is our main objective. It is necessary to be champions.

"But the boss is a man who knows how to pick his players up and will help us get back on track."

That's what I like to hear. The players should be hurting after such a poor campaign. In disappointment the best thing we can is respond in style.

Feel sorry for Nani considering at times it felt he was the only player on the field trying to drive us to the win against Basel.

Another very good game from him today, two goals and an assist (good for my fantasy team :D). After a little off-period a month or two ago, he's come back strong again lately.

Reminded me of his form earlier this season. Hope he (and the other players) pick up their best form now

I still think he's our most important player at the club. In many ways I think he's wasted on the wing but he's our best crosser by a country mile. Great to see him back in form, a good run of fixtures coming up!

Would you play in a more advanced position ? Possibly like the last 2-3 seasons of Ronaldo ?

lethal when moving laterally...with either foot. if his play could be more consistant from game to game we'd be saying he may be the best in europe.

feck me, you just called Rooney our "best player by a mile", one of our most inconsistent players.

Nani is very consistent, ridiculous that some fans still post this drivel.

wtf! i didn't say anything about rooney's inconsistant play. that's obvious...and he is the best player on United. i don't think there's much debate about that. nani's inconsistant play is very debatable.

He probably is the best winger in europe not named Ronaldo or Messi (technically Messi plays upfront these days anyway).

Robben is probably the only player who could argue, but I'd give Nani the edge.

And other than the period late last season after the Liverpool hatchet job and the month or so period about two months ago, he's been bloody consistent since around January 2010.

I always find it bizarre that we sub off Nani when he's having a bad day because he's the one man who can create something from absolutely nothing.

someone made up a chant for nani on twitter. it might have been sung at OT today. Not sure.

"He plays on the left, he plays on the right, he looks like Michael Jackson, before he was white"

 That's great.

On fire today. Him and Rooney to hit good, consistent form is what we need to win stuff this season.

Fantastic goal today. He has really improved from his early days and he seems to genuinely love the club.

Nani was the only one who came away from that Wednesday night mess with any kind of credit to his name.

Has been our main threat for quite some time now... even on off days.

Can we all agree now that Nani can play on the left?

Was that disputed?

What was disputed was the fact that he's better when he plays on the right.

Yes. By many who insisted his drop in form at the end of last season was not down to being Carra'd but because he was playing on the left. He's probably more consistent on the right but he can play either side excellently. My favourite Nani pass, with the outside of the foot vs Milan, for Rooney's second in the 4-0 in 2009 came off the left and arguably his best game was against Munich in the 3-2 that season where he tore them to pieces til Rafael got sent off. For me, with Nani, its all mental. He's capable of so much but its all about keeping him happy and confident. It feels like sometimes he takes being moved to the left as a sign that Fergie doesn't feel he's doing the business out right and his confidence drops a bit. In fact he should just interpret it as him being so vital to the XI that Fergie finds a place for him when he changes tactics. A happy and self-confident Nani is a truly dangerous footballer.

Rate him, but would become an even better player if he was less selfish in many occassions and tried to go for the more simple and efficient pass rather than try and beat 2-3 players. He can be quite frustrating at times because of this.

This is often true, but today he was very unselfish.
