Luckhurst: United prepared to move for a holding midfielder in January

I am really not following closely this transfer window but why we would be in for Tripper? We have Wan Bissaka who was second coming Jesus until Euro Shaw came so we have both fullback sorted and i think Telles and Dalot are good second options. Surely we have other priorities than spending a lot of money on a position where we have great player.
He’s very good cover for both fullback positions and puts in a very very good cross.

Depth signing. I think (and hope) that AWB will maintain his spot and keep progressing going forwards.

Would be a decent signing if the price is right.

Because like Telles helped Shaw kick on, Trippier can do the same for Wan-Bissaka as he faltered a bit during the last stage of last season. Plus, his attacking game needs work. Trippier is a really solid, attacking RB. Dalot is a similar age to AWB and needs to play. Aaron will stunt Dalot's development and so I imagine he'd rather be a starter at another club. Plus, because Dalot and AWB are a similar age, they won't really be learning much off each other. Besides, Dalot is an attacking RB, but isn't as good as Trips.

Yeah plus Dalot is woeful. Needs to be moved on urgento.

AWB has not been a great option for many a game in which we have a massive amount of possession, see the EL final as a perfect example. Teams can far too easily concentrate on our left side and allow our RB to have a shit load of the ball, they couldn't give Trippier that amount of ball without being hurt.

With Varane's arrival Trippier would also give us the option of playing 3 at the back as he can play WB, something AWB, if I'm being kind, hasn't mastered.

Also Dalot is not a good option.

I just don't think he's suited to English football. He seemed to do fairly well in Italy, so let's hope Milan or another club stump up the money.

One of the reasons is that we didn't have any decent attacking player on the right side too. Sancho should be a threat there so they shouldn't be able to concentrate solely on the left/middle even with AWB playing.

They can and will still allow our RB a tonnes of ball and freedom though. Trippier gives the squad a superb option to prevent that.

Why is it disrespectful to say that? But yes - he is nowhere near good enough if we are serious about challenging for titles.

The blind loyalty to whoever wears a red shirt never ceases to amaze me either.

Replacing Fred when he is statistically our best CM is outrageous. Our winrate is much higher with him in midfield than McTominay or Pogba.

Those 3 were our starting CMs last season. If Fred's the best out of the 3, it doesnt matter that you think he's not good enough. We're not buying 2 midfielders, so we replace the weakest link.

I’m not sure he pulled up trees over there, they are pondering a second loan and don’t seem remotely interested in buying him.

He needs a positive loan to lure somebody into buying him. Really cannot see him making it here.

Agree, but do you not think the reason AWB's positioning may have been a bit off is because he was covering Lindelof who's not been the best in the air?
I think having Varane instead plus Sancho will make a huge difference to AWB's play in both defence and attack. Not sure if Tripper is needed.Especially with Laird coming through. Prefer the money to be spent on a CDM.

I think Lindelof has defended the box pretty well generally, I think he's massively underrated on here. But the addition of a World Class centre back has to be of benefit to the entire back line. Varane's a clear upgrade. I'm hoping that his pace allows us to play a higher line and dominate territorially, so as to mask Wan Bissaka's weaknesses defensively.

He should have a lot more space offensively too as Sancho will frighten the life out of defenders and they'll have to double up on him.

I'm hoping the significant signing is a long term replacement for Matic.

It's obvious to the sensible, but I guess it still needs pointing out.

For what it's worth, I am behind signing Trippier ~15M as an alternative to AWB when needed, plus the competition factor. But it wouldn't be a "significant" signing - by that logic, Telles was also "significant".

Telles was significant, at least in terms of getting Shaw back to his best. He was our best player last season and it was largely down to the early competition of Telles. For what it's worth, I think a significant signing in this context means a first team squad player, so Id imagine Trippier would class as significant, not least because he'd play more games than not.

Tripper is better against a low defensive block than AWB. Besides as other posters have said, we have seen the improvement in Shaw since Telles arrived. Shaw has learnt from telles i.e. improving his delivery and has also risen to the challenge. Hopefully AWB (who i think is a very capable RB) will rise to the challenge and can learn from Trippier. Dont forget trippier has spent what two seasons now learning the dark arts of defending from Simone and that much vanted defensive. Hopefully he can impart that knowledge to our defenders.

Anyway i dont see Trippier as the signficant 3rs signing. It will be a central midfielder of some kind. I'd presume its someone like Saul, Neves, Camavinga. Or ideally of we could just make a move for de jong that would be great
Barcelona are on their knees, lets raid them for one of their best talents.

Yeah agree. On the bolded, that would be a dream signing, absolutely perfect for us.

From a positional standpoint, Neves offers something which we don’t have. He is closer to the quintessential 6 with decent defensive output and range of passing. Saul is probably more classy than him but he is not a 6. If we could get both and pair them together, it could be quite a solid pairing.

For me. Definitely a top complete creative nr.8. Not only best on passing and dictating. I m saying complete. To become Nr.8 for United. I demand a lot. And to have experienced Paul Scholes. A world class and one of the best Nr.8 in football history. I might Dejan and expect too much. Reasons why Pogba is still struggling to reach that level, on a consistent basis. Move out to LW sometime last season.
Still United weakest position and missing link.

A top Scholes, Pogba, Modric, Barella or whoever. If United are planning to beat City, Liverpool or Chelsea to win the league.

My vote go to a complete and Nr.8. If Pogba stay and reach that level. Consistent top level. I will take my vote back.

Central midfield is by far weakest position. We need someone to dictate play so badly because we don't have anyone who can. We won't challenge much with this level of midfield.

Pogba isn't even the type of player you have described.

From SAF final years we gathered we can win silverware without a midfield. If we sign Trippier I'll be very happy, but not very very happy.

Would be happy with Trippier, but was impressed with Dalot when he came on. Would be even happier if we strengthen our midfield.

In fred we trust

Significant probably means midfielder with impact. Not many goal scoring machines on the market anyway and Ole is happy with keepers...

Somewhat disappointed if we can’t sign Trippier as he’d be a tidy bit of business I think… but central midfield is the one everyone’s concerned about so I’d rather we focus on that.

It would be a massive downer on our business this summer if we don't sign a midfielder to be honest. It's a must.
Not sure about that. We've improved our squad more than anyone else so far, we'll see how things stand at the end of the window.

From Luckhurst's article:

However, United rejected Milan's approach as their preference would be to recruit a midfielder ahead of a full-back and Dalot has received positive feedback from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff.
