Luckhurst: United prepared to move for a holding midfielder in January

We're unable to shift out deadwood because of wage demands. We can only register so many first team players so that's probably what's holding up a final move by us. Too many players these days care about their wage packet than actual playing time.

Would be a poor summer if we only make two signings and dont clear out any dead wood. On top of that it would mean we let lingard and pogba leave on a free.

Its amazing we have signed three right wingers over the last two windows but no dm. Sure pellistri and amad are prospects but they cost around £35m in total

Oh come on.. Varane + Sancho is at worst a alright summer nomatter what else is happening

I'd like to see Trippier come in, it seems a very mature signing in the sense that its not a flashy first team player, but it makes so much sense from a squad standpoint:
  • He adds cover at both LB and RB, an issue we were all aware of last season
  • He adds competition to start at RB and can be a more attacking option over AWB against lesser teams
  • He has a wealth of experience and seems desperate to come
All this for 15-20m seems a good deal to me and because he's played in the PL for ages, there's little risk of him not settling.

15-20m is not the amount Atletico demands though. Its 30m. If you add 5 on top of that you get either Neves, Camavinga, Saul or Bissouma. This is why its stupid to prioritize a backup rightback over a midfielder with the limited budget we have. A midfielder is a must, a backup rightback would be a nice bonus but not a necessity.

Agree. Read people mentioning nobody has any money....the premiership has, we should still be able to offload a few players regardless of the current problems financially. Certainly enough to buy a quality central midfielder of which there are several about.

Would class it as a poor summer, by any means....but look at the other top sides in the league, also siging players of quality and still off loading too

Our summer is decent so far, definitely not poor, however if we sold Shaw, Pogba and Maguire how alright would it be then? Just testing out the bolded :).

That's part of the reason but Utd could lower their expectations slightly on the transfer fee, they could also just pay up their contract to get them out, obviously that is pointed at Jones, Pereira could go for 10m but we're asking too much.

I imagine there will be sales in the closing weeks as many of the smaller clubs will play brinkmanship hoping the bigger clubs just want rid and will hopefully get a lower fee. I’d imagine if Lingard was available for say 20mil you’d get loads jumping after it. Perreria sub 10 and so on.

Anyway I feel like we should do poor Barca a solid and take that DeJong off their hands to help lessen their wage bill and get them in that 70% zone.

Pereira would not fetch 10M in this market sadly, his value is probably only half of that at this point and it is all a bit of a moot point as we have not had any offers for him other than a couple of loan proposals.

if this is accurate they are going to be desperate for cash.....We should 100% try throwing in a bid of 60-70m for DeJong and see if we could land him

If they're hard up for cash the last thing we do is offer 60-70m.

Little point if the player doesn't want to move.

It's actually Lingard. Will get a contract extension to 2025, feels like a new signing.

Not really a fair comparison because Wijnaldum rarely played as a 10 for Liverpool. He did well there for Newcastle and Holland though. Henderson, I don't rate.

Wijnaldum would be first guy on the sheet in the pivot, maybe with the exception of Fred. Reliable, versatile player. Not every midfielder in a team needs flair, like Pogba has. They're different, but overall yes, for the EPL, Gini is better than Pogba (sadly).
.
Ole doesn't trust Pogba in CM against big teams where he plays with McFred, meanwhile he's experimenting with Donny in the pivot who doesn't even start for Holland.
Donny does start for Holland. He missed the euros with injury.

He'd be our top earner based on what he gets now. It would be a silly move to help Barca out and smash our safe structure.
What does he earn? Google seems to say 176,000 which isn't much, I'm guessing its more than that. Even doubling that would be kind of ok with me though. Its a lot for a midfielder but Pogba is gone next season so dont think its necessarily an issue.

I think that could be net though. It's supposedly in the region of 400k euros. I think the club are trying to keep Pogba though, so bringing in someone who's on higher wages isn't a move they are probably contemplating

well there's really no chance of that happening if Pogba stays but fuking hell i'd swap those two in a fuking heartbeat as DeJong suits us so much better than Pogba does

Agreed. I really want the Trippier move to go ahead.

Noises from Barcelona have been consistent all along that de Jong and Pedri are untouchable as they are meant to form the core of their future team. I believe they would entertain bids for anyone else in their squad given their situation but it would be a complete waste of time pursuing either of those 2 unless you were prepared to pay way over their actual value.

Poor summer?

Have your head checked

I'd like a midfielder but if we don't sign anyone else I won't exactly moan. Pretty happy with the squad now.

If you were to ask me what two positions we needed more than any other I would've said CB and RW and we've done that.

If and i say if we get a top class DM then this has been the best transfer window for the past decade. If not then it’s just a good one but a top class DM is such a gaping hole in our squad it would be unwise to waste the year avoiding it so we can buy one next year

Varane and Sancho is a "poor summer"??? What a hilariously dreadful take.

I think Althleico blinks at the deadline. They have hardly any leverage here...United just needs to be patient.

They may not have leverage but they also consider him to be their starting RB and as far as I can discern from the mess of misinformation out there he is still under contract for 2 more years. They don't want to sell nor do they apparently need to sell, the only thing that could potentially move the needle at this point is if Trippier downs tools and refuses to play which I don't think is likely.

Thanks!

Well no doubt they are good signings but are they enough? Its been pretty clear we have been in dire need of improvement in centre mid over the last two seasons but we are still going into the season where a mcfred combo looks likely.

I dont see us challenging for a title or the champions league with those two or pogba in a deeper role, which is what we need to be doing at this stage.

We have signed only three players likely to start over the last two windows and one of those is highly injury prone (Cavani). Which just isnt enough to bridge the gap with city

Imagine having to have that conversation with that absolute maniac of a manager they have

Not really.

If you take everything into context the signings themselves are great but it's not enough.
If you were to be really picky, you could say 'decent'. But 'poor' no. Not having it. Two problem areas filled with two absolute star players is anything but 'poor'.

We could easily raise £70-£80 million in deadwood sales. Our ridiculous wage structure that has allowed mediocre players to be given obscene contracts is what is stopping us.

Is Lingard worth £25-£30 million to a club aspiring to break into Europe? Absolutely. But very few clubs can justify and afford paying him £100k a week on top of a transfer fee.

Did I read the other day that Brandon Williams is on £65k a week? Absolutely bonkers if true.

I’d imagine clubs with hopes of breaking into Europe are already paying those kind of wages. I think the issue with Lingard is him not wanting to sign for those clubs.
