Lucas da Silva | Signed for PSG

I said this a couple of weeks back.

Think it'll be a 'go with what we have' speech.

Not fussed about Lucas - seems a whole load of hype over an inexperienced boy.

Not sure Ligue 1 and PSG is the best breeding ground for a young player trying to fulfil potential.

It's worrying, though. For all the improvement that Kagawa brings we have no cover for two positions despite having a huge squad and a weakish midfield. The work that we really had to fo this summer hasn't even been touched upon.

I don't see what Lucas would have done to remedy your concerns though, Amol.

By all accounts, he's a wide player. Sure, he can play inside, but he'd have been an attacking midfield option; not really what we need.

As I've said throughout the summer, SAF is clearly premising his squad building on Carrick being the lynchpin, Scholes & Giggs giving us 40 starts between them, and Cleverley & Anderson stepping up to the plate. If - and it's a gargantuan if - the latter two stay fit, we're reasonably well set.

We'll also likely break Powell into the side, and Kagawa will spend a bit of time in midfield too.

In that context, I can understand why he hasn't added to the midfield, to an extent. We look like we have good options. That said, we're worryingly short on cover for Carrick - unless SAF plans to use Jones there.

Well at least we're still no 1 in attracting sponsors to us.

with vidic back, i expect jones to play more games in midfield.

We've never had a bid accepted. So the player hasn't rejected us, per se. What did you want United to do? By all accounts, they bit up to 35m Euro for him...

Erm which part of that post you disagree with?

I dont give a feck about Lucas to be honest. However anyone thinking that we're top tier in terms of attracting players to us is mistaken and things are set to get worse. This agent fee is in football for good.

I think that's always been the case. Pretty much for as long as I can remember. Only, Redcafe and Twitter people seem to get more menstrual with each passing transfer window.

The thing is that its getting worse. The Sheiks and the agent 'fee' is in football for good and the latter will soon become the norm rather then the exception of the case. We either adapt or else we're destined to go deeper in the pecking order.

Oh well lets hope that by using defenders and nearly 40 year olds in CM we'll be able to stay on top. We're also using wingers as fullbacks these days.

Jones is a terrible midfielder at this time. And not adequete cover or an option.

Twitter suggesting this Lucas deal is now dead.

That's what I'm saying. Lucas was never going to solve those issues. Neither was Hazard. And while Kagawa will add a lot, neither will he. We have two specific areas (CM And LB) we need to strengthen and there's been little sign that we will do so with little time left.

I think you may be right about that being the plan but it's flawed for me. As you've said, there's no cover for Carrick. So if he gets injured we'll be left with a bunch of attack minded central midfielder and one that sits and passes brilliantly but can't really defend either. All our options bar Carrick, are also either injury prone, not the finished product or nearing 40. It's too big a gamble for me. And given the difference between us and City last season it could be decisive.

What deal? The one PSG is about to agree? Cause we never had a deal and as it look won't have one.

He's a defender FFS. Haven't we tried that option already? How did our CM fared last season?

In fairness, I wouldn't say it's clear what position is Jones' best. He has good and bad qualities at CB, RB and holding midfield. If anything, he's been more adept in midfield than at CB since joining United.

On your other (emotional) point; clearly, SAF will be expecting Anderson and Cleverley - both early 20s - to play a bigger role this season.

Yes, they have had injury problems in the past. The club have obviously taken a view that they can get over that.

According to the journos on twitter, the fee with the club was agreed some time ago. The deal failed when we spoke to the agent.

PSG will throw money at the agent, so I think this whole saga is over.

Ando had been here for donkey years and had never been able to secure a regular place. Surely he's talented but he gets injured at a regular rate and he lack consistency. Cleverley is also unlucky with injuries and has yet shown to be able to play at the highest level. He did well with minor EPL sides but so did Richardson and Foster. Not to forget that we've got no cover for Carrick (unless we play a defender there).

Sometimes I feel that nowadays we've only interested in bringing potential with a huge resale value. We never needed Jones or Lucas Moura but we tried/managed to sign them up. Meanwhile other areas of the team had been neglected. I wont be surprised if we use the 'Jones' theory (ie use a player out of position) to cover Evra.

Bob Cass has gone quiet. That's as good a sign as any that things aren't going too well at the moment. The cnut would never miss a chance to gloat.

Of course it is. Disspointing, but we got Bebe.

Hopefully we will adress our real issues in the squad now.

The only disappointment is that Fergie seemed to have really wanted him. But 30 million for an unproven 19 year old, who can't get into Brazil under 23 squad ahead of central midfielders in his position is a lot.

can anyone explain to me fergie's reasoning in wanting a young craque so bad? hazard, then lucas...does he miss ronnie so much that he wants another one but this time willing to break our transfer record for one?

does he feel nani has maxed out his potential and it just isn't good enough?

Does Ferguson miss our Balon dor player and does he want to create another one. Hmmmmm let me think.

Could it be the case that he knows that Nani will not remain at OT for long? An alternative to that would be that United need to instill some serious quality to the side. I cant blame him for that since we are finding it harder to crack defenses this days.

Fergie just loves bringing in players we dont particularly need if he sees loads of potential in them.

This.
Nothing to do with Nani. But if Ferguson sees someone with huge potential it's only natural he tries to get him

The likes of Anderson, Cleverley, Powell and Carrick are old? Never knew that.

I assume things are pretty bad in the muppet land. First hazard now lucas, now all the hopes rest on rvp.

Yes he was Villa's best player and that doesn't take much.

He had a decent season last year, and players like him make up the bulk of the squad. You can't have twenty five superstars - he let nobody down when he played and had some very good games.

Real life is not like Football Manager.

Foster and Richardson didn't impress in a run of games for us. Cleverley did, albeit it was only 10-15 games.

DDG(21), Lidegaard(28)

Rafael(22)-Rio(33)-Vida(30)-Evra(31)
Jones(20)-Smalling(22)-Evans(24)-Fabio(22)

Valencia(27)-Carrick(31)-Scholes(37)-Nani(25)
Young(27)-Cleverley(22)-Ando(24)-Powell(18)-Giggs(38)

Kagawa(23)
Rooney(26), Hernandez(24), Welbeck(21)

*Fletcher(28), Berbatov(31)

As usual, you're always doom mongering.
Neglected? What the hell are you talking about? Which part of that team is neglected? Ever since Roman came into the picture and we knew we couldn't compete directly with them(and their kinds). VDS, Vida, Evra, CR, Park.. they were all bought for very little, although we paid a lot for a teenager(CR) at that time. And we've always bought players around the age of 25 and below. It's nothing new. SAF always talked about looking further ahead and having a good balance of 'experience/age' in the squad. And we have that.

I couldn't get excited when I heard about us bidding for him: I hadn't seen enough of him to care. A month later having watched him in action as a benchwarmer for Brazil's U23s, I can't get excited about someone bidding more than us.

If we're in an auction (and actually I'm not sure how much of this is press/agent smoke and mirrors and how much is serious) then it's like any other auction. You don't just keep sticking your hand up once the price is above what you think he's worth.

Assuming Kagawa will primarily play behind Rooney, Giggs not a winger anymore and Park already left, we only have 3 wingers. So we could do with another one, someone that is able to dribble past people for fun. We don't really have one right now. Nani blows hot and cold and doesn't run at people all the time, Valencia can't get past everybody, Young doesn't have the ability to do it consistently..

well thats another deal dead in the water, move along folks for that kind of cash PSG can have em. No doubt they are gonna shell the agents fee out aswel to keep Mr Wagner happy.

Seriously agents are parasites within the game. A big industrial sized bottle od raid is required for the c*nts cos there aint a hope in hell that Fifa/Uefa will try and phase these scumbags out in some way.
