Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

The club went all out this summer to arm LVG with the weapons he'll need to achieve at least a 4th place finish. We signed some fantastic players, including one of the top five on the planet. The pressure is severely on LVG to deliver results now and get us back into Europe and I have faith that he can achieve that. If he doesn't, the club will ask serious questions.

I agree with you. But if Van Gaal is to do that he needs to play that player in their best position and do the same with our other 'high talent' players.

I have a real problem with managers playing their best players out of position rather than in position with the rest of the team built around them, when a manager starts doing this I often feel it's a signal that they're flailing a bit.

I know I went on about it a lot, but seeing that line up against City with Rooney in CM, Di Maria pushed outside and Carrick and Herrera on the bench I felt this immediate gloom - a feeling of, 'oh no, not this'.

I like Van Gaal, and I know he's a great coach, but so far I don't feel he's made the sacrifices needed to make this team really gel. It's felt many times that he's trying to make sure certain players are simply on the pitch SOMEWHERE, at the expense of team balance, rather than making sure there is team balance at all times at the expense of playing every big name player.

It's such an odd season. I find myself very largely unaffected by us losing or drawing and happy at being able to enjoy how we play our football.

I feel the same. I'm looking forward to our matches more now than ever before.

Absolutely. The weird thing is, the worst part about last season wasn't even the results. Our football was just ghastly.

I really like the way this 2014/15 team plays even if results havent been on ours ide.

One thing....what about "bad luck" "wrong desicions" factors. IIRC we were robbed of two peons this season that would have given us 4 extera points...
Pretty sure every team could claim this multiple times a season. The cream still rise.

Yup. There was also the mental aspect. I just didn't believe in what we were doing, simply expecting the same mistakes to occur, and nothing would change from week to week.

This time I think we're headed in a better direction. It will be a bumpy season ahead but a relatively enjoyable one, I feel.

While results haven't been great so far I definitely feel a sense of progression and direction.

Little example list:

1:Easy on the eye Football
2:We're actually scoring late goals again!
3:No anti-manager comments leaking from the dressing room.
4:Young players given the responsibility when the opportunity occurs
5:No bowing to big ego's. (Subbed or dropped if they underperform.)
6:No 'Aspiring to be like City' comments.
7:No player lockouts. Everyone in this group it seems will get a fair chance.
8:Finally no sugar coating our performances. Just tells it as it is.

At the end of the day though I think we are just two CB's away from being a top class side.

LVG has always said our squad was unbalanced and did try to get Hummels n Vaemalen(spelling?) into the club this summer.
I guess this tells us he must know our defence is either not good enough (or too injury prone to actually find out.)

So in conclusion...at the moment I'm just trying to enjoy the ride. We're like a plucky little dinghy with dreadnought weaponry. We're capable of destroying anyone. Equally we're capable of being sunk with a pin prick.

They are interesting but from what I remember we fell away badly not long after that with Moyes. It will be interesting to compare at the end of the season because it does feel like we are going in the right direction this season.

Moyes had the advantage of having managed in the English League for donkey's years.

Though LVG has had the advantage of having ADM, Falcao, Herrera, Blind, Mata (from the start) and Shaw.

He's also more experienced and has a much better pedigree.

Yep I expected better for LVG.

The records for both are very close right now.

Of the players you listed most have not been available to LVG from the start of the season, and most have little premiership experience.

But tbh I'm not defending either manager.

Interesting, though I think pretty much all these stats mean nothing. They are all pretty close, so even though Moyesy seems to have the edge, it's a pretty pointless edge to have.

The stats have little meaning here, unless you think football is reducible to quantitative metrics.

I remember the first 10 games last season there weren't a lot of people who were calling for Moyes' head and his critics were far and few between. They also mostly seemed to be Everton fans on a WUM but it turned out they were actually right.

A lot of ups and downs so far but after that disastrous season I expected that for first couple months. Watching how we play there are signs of us gelling as a team the past couple matches despite imperfect results and I feel our mentality is starting to come back with late goals against WBA and Chelsea and late surge of pressure against City. I think come March we will have a clearer idea of how much improvements have been made (or lack thereof) under LVG so I am reserving my judgement on him overall until that time despite statistics against him currently.

A question to the people who are still defending, haven't been critical of LVG, and aren't yet, concerned, frustrated at the lack of results, progress etc etc etc. What or how long will it take before you start to get worried, annoyed, frustrated?
Read my posts and you will see that I do not criticize LVG, so I will answer from my view.

I was well happy when LVG got the job, he plays a style of football that I like and has the ego that I think is necessary to take on a big role. My expectations, were that we get top 4. Not a title challenge, and I don't care how much he has spent. We are competing with Arsenal, City and Chelsea to name a few that have had a fairly consistent squad for a number of years with the odd fine tuning. Though, Moyes, took over what people could also argue was a fairly stable squad, LVG didn't. He lost 3 of his most experienced defenders, and arguably our only creative midfielder in Giggs. Therefore, I accepted that whoever he brought in would have to gel. We have seen at Spurs, and previously at Chelsea too much change causes problems. It is a bit of a myth that you can just buy good players and they will gel day 1.

So, I initially expected us to be fighting with Spurs, Liverpool and Everton for that final place. I always think that Spurs have a mental block against the big teams, even when they are in form, so I usually expect them to drop off. Everton, OK when they have their first 11, but again, seem to have a mental block against the big teams. So that leaves us and Liverpool. Now regardless of how well they played last year, their confidence was high an I think they played above their level on many occasions. Take Suarez aside, and I think they are probably 1 gear down at least. Add all their changes and all of a sudden they don't look so hot. So I still have expectations of 4th this year.

As for concern, I think the doomsayers are well OTT. Nobody will argue that they are happy with the points total, but relative to our challengers we are all in the mix a quarter of the way through the season. Do I see disorganization that so many mention, NO. Do I see unbalance that so many mention, NO. It may all sound good to say that, but I do think it is a load of ****. I see a team, that since Leicester has played as a team, I think they have been well organized. Have players made mistakes Rafael & Co for WBA, Smalling for City, Rooney for WHU, YES. However, I do not attribute any of that to LVG. I see a heart in the team, even though I still think we are short of a leader. As for our attacking threat, it has not helped that RVP has been a bit off form, and Falcao has been injured, however we would not be better with Danny or Hernandez.

When would I get worried, when the players don't look as thought they are playing for LVG. If, we keep on dropping points against the lower teams in second half of the year then I will really be worried. I don't see that happening, and I also expect the challenge for 4th to go to the wire. So as long as we are there or there abouts I am happy. Next year is a different story, but I set my expectations for 4th, so that why I am not too concerned at the moment. We are not better or worse than any of our challengers.

A few of these things in combination that would make me worried:
  • Growing rumours of player or dressing room unrest.
  • Deteriorating standards of play
  • LvG getting more and more defensive with every interview
  • Seeming inability to stop the rot

Contrast this with Moyes:
  • Murmurs of players not believing in his methods started almost right off the bat from day 1. There were almost open discontent from not just the players in the club, but even his coaches and players were almost critical of him. Here's a few things that I can remember off the top of my head.
    • Fell out with Ferdinand and Vidic
    • Allegedly fell out with Giggs & RvP
    • Alienated Kagawa
    • Made the team unhappy over perceived preferential treatment towards Rooney
    • Made Cleverly and Welbeck unhappy after fining them for drinking after lost to BM
    • Everton coach Kevin Sheedy criticise Moyes lack of focus on youth
    • Ross Barkley said that Martinez's coaching was better
  • The standards of play actually got worse as the season progressed. It was almost like... that Man Utd retained some of Sir Alex's coaching team influence in the earlier part of the season and gradually lost it as the season progressed, as they take in more and more Moyes' coaching.
  • Results got worse as the season progress. In matches that we win, it was either fortuitous or largely down to individual brilliance, rather than well organised team play and tactics.
  • Moyes got more and more erractic in his interviews as the season progress, almost sounding like a man running out of ideas:
    • Start of season - "I have brilliant players who had just won the league by 12 points, I don't need new signings"
    • EPL starts - "I think the fixture list is rigged"
    • A third way through - "Our team lack a few star players to win the EPL" & "Our team is nowhere near good enough to win the CL"
    • Half-way through - "Even Sir Alex couldn't win the league with this team"
    • Towards the end - "I don't know what I have to do to win"
    • Bonus 1, before player Liverpool @ Old Trafford - "Liverpool are favourites"
    • Bonus 2, after playing Man Citeh - "We have to aspire to Citeh's level"
    • Bonus 3 - "We have to stop Newcastle from playing".

LVG will get destroyed by the press if we don't get a victory tomorrow. Many a journalist will be sharpening their knives as we speak.

Which is ridiculous when you think... We have our 5 first choice defenders out. Will have to play a winger at right back and either a kid and a midfielder or two kids at Centreback.

How the feck are you supposed to confidently build attacks with that defence?

How are we in Nov and still don't have a preferred formation?
He still isn't sure how to fit in the strikers we have.. It'll only get worse when Falcao is fit again.

And this has nothing to do with the scoreline. Its more to do with Rooney playing in midfield when we have a very good midfielder sitting on the bench.

We've taken a couple of steps backwards with that switch to 4-1-4-1. What's the point of playing a formation reliant on fecking wingers when your wingers are as fruitless as it gets?

Feels like playing with 352.

He's been a fecking disaster so far. We've added £150 million worth of players yet look no better than we did under Moyes.

Awful formation and tactics today, if this was Moyes he would be getting ripped to shreds. Worst 1st half we've played. I don't care what anyone says we are NOT any better than we were under Moyes except Moyes didn't spend £150 million.

Also If Moyes played Di Maria the same way LVG has used him recently everyone would be crying and moaning so...

why is LVG so untouchable? the fact is we aren't any better than we were under Moyes reign if anything we are worse. He better change it for the second half.

Whichever formation we play we look disjointed and lack any balance, too many similar players or players being shoe horned into position. The problems with this formation is we don't have a playmaker in midfield, neither Rooney or fellaini look capable of opening the game up and di Maria and januzaj aren't at their best playing out wide. Factor in the makeshift defence and fact RVP looks way off the pace and it isn't really a surprise we look ordinary at best.

This. We are not progressing. We hard a really exciting start football wise. Back to Zombie passing now.

All the excitment from the early stages of the season have gone. Back to the stale, zomie passing, Moyes-esque football.

Absolutely horrendous.

If it continues like this we will lose this game to a corner/freekick/long ball and then we will really be in the shit and it's not even Christmas.

I genuinely do not understand what Van Gaal is trying to achieve in today's game against Palace. It looks terrible. Our best players are getting the ball in the wrong areas, or not at all. There's nothing in midfield. We are playing the same way we did in all those home losses last year: having lots of the ball, doing nothing with it, and getting counter punched. Van Gaal must change something, fast, or I fear another embarrassing home defeat.

IN my opinion LVG is one of the finest coaches of the last 20 years. Truly world class (a term much over used).

But he has looked fecking clueless since the opening match of the season.

We have virtually no chance of getting top four.

Standard OT home game. Once they tire in the second half we'll get a couple and start opening them up.

But wait, you can't judge him or give your opinion on him until you give him a year in charge. As if it isn't painfully obvious how crap he's been so far. Not questioning his managerial abilities as he's actually one of the best coaches in the world, nor am I saying he needs the sack, but just saying as it is, that he's been crap at United so far. It's not looking like improving either.

Can anyone think of another team that plays its 2 best players out of position? To accommodate a Maruane Fellaini? And then doesnt even cross the ball? Mind fecking boggling.

Some of his decisions are just baffling. The diamond seemed to be working well - change it. Talks about lack of balance - puts out an unbalanced lineup. Has our best midfielder available - puts a striker in midfield. Brings Mata on - throw him in the wing. I mean wtf...

I don't really understand LVG to be honest. I understood Moyes and why he made some decisions but LVG just baffles me.

It's like he watches a different game to everyone else.
